Question:
I have a1996 GMC K1500 extended cab short bed 4wd standard step bumper. I would like to use a 10,000 pound rated hitch or higher and still be able to leave my spare in the original place. My spare is the factory 265/75/16. I have looked at different hitches before, none would fit my spare. I have a 5,000 pound now, but is in pretty bad shape. I would like the higher capacity just for the safety margin. What would you suggest?

Expert Reply:
I'd recommend going with the Curt Class V hitch, part # C15325 which has a 16K capacity. The hitch is compatible with the stock spare tire size on your 1996 GMC K1500, although you might need to lower the spare during the install for better access to the frame members, but it'll fit back into position just fine once the hitch is installed.
I've provided a photo showing the hitch installed with a full-sized spare tire. I've also linked to the installation instructions.
