Published 12/02/2021

Question:

Hi. I'm looking for a hitch and brake controller to tow my trailer. I don't have a factory tow package as far as I can tell. What do I need? 2022 Subaru Ascent is what I have.

Starting off with a hitch for your 2022 Subaru Ascent, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e55ZR. This Class III hitch has a 2" receiver and is completely hidden when the center bumper cover is attached. It has a maximum gross trailer weight of 5,000 lbs, tongue weight of 750 lbs, and is compatible with weight distribution. It features a rugged, matte black finish for rust and corrosion protection and is made in the USA.

If you don't have wiring already, you will also want the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118290. This plugs directly into existing wiring and will provide you with a 7-way connection at the back of your vehicle.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller - Proportional # RED24FR. The main unit on this brake controller mounts out of sight, leaving you with the control knob visible in your vehicle. The control knob mounts anywhere in the dash, allowing for fast and easy adjustment and manual override. It uses a colored LED for diagnostics. In order to install this brake controller you will also want the Universal Wiring Harness # RED69FR.

In order to complete your setup you will also need a ball mount. Check out the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This kit has two ball mounts, one with a 3/4" rise or 2" drop and the other with a 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop. It also comes with a 1-7/8" and 2" ball, as well as a ball mount bag to store everything in.

I have attached some review and installation videos for your reference.
