does the pin need to stay in at all times or is it ok to remove when not towing?

It is recommended to keep the Breakaway Switch Pin # SM99905 in at all times with either the Stay-In-Play # DM86VR or Air Force One # DM26VR. The pin will not only protect the braking system from activating when not needed it also keeps the dirt and debris out of pin hole.
If you are worried about something catching on the loop you can purchase a spare Pin # SM99905 and cut the loop off to use when you are driving around.
