To add a 7-way on your 2021 Ford Explorer without a factory tow package, you will need to first install a 4-way connector. That is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness - 4 Pole # 118599. After the 4-way is installed, you can then install the 7-way. For that part, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat # ETBC7. With the 7-way, you will get full functionality of brake lights/running lights/turn signals as well as the capability to install a brake controller.
To add a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 or the Curt Echo # C51180. Both of these controllers are proportional controllers which means that the controller activates the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. The Voyager is more of a traditional-style controller than requires mounting into the dashboard of your vehicle near the steering wheel. On the other hand, the Curt Echo allows you to control the settings of your controller with the ease of your Smart device.
