Question:
Hi, I have a 2018 GMC 2500HD with a 2 1/2inch hitch I need to extend my clearance to lower my tailgate and stay hooked up to my travel trailer. My trailer weighs 5200lbs my tongue weight should be between 500-700lbs. I am looking for clearance not only to lower tailgate but also to be able to make turns safely without hitting my lowered tailgate on the trailer. The set up I a looking at is using a Brophy hitch reducer/extender HR26 to go from 2 1/2inch to 2inch with Curt weight distribution shank C17122. Thank you for your feed back!

You can use the setup that you mentioned: Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch 7" # HR26 and Curt Weight Distribution Shank 14" # C17122. Both of these are rated for well over what your trailer weight and tongue weight will be so you won't have an issue there. One thing to note here is that the Brophy Reducer will reduce your trailer hitch receiver's overall capacity by 1/3. Your 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 Hitch should be rated for more than enough so this likely won't be an issue, but it is something to keep in mind.
