We were looking for a solution to haul our utv when pulling our camper. This extender allowed us to leave the tailgate down and still have enough clearance to not damage the tailgate. Downside--this extender amplifies the amount of movement with the hitch. This is more than a simple hitch clamp could fix. I added several modifications to completely eliminate the hitch movement. We have taken several trips since the installation and no issues with pulling the trailer. We did have to extend the safety chains about 4 links. Overall a good product and it accomplished the goal. As always, etrailer personnel are knowledgeable, easy to deal with and have quick shipments.

@JonW We're glad to hear that! Keep in mind that using the reducer/extender will lower the weight capacity of your hitch by 1/3.

Well built extension

I purchased this to use on my 2500HD to transition from the factory 2.5" receiver to a 2" so that we could use a Yakima hitch mounted bike rack. With the length of the tube, it also provides the perfect amount of clearance from the back of the truck so that I can lower the tailgate without it hitting the upright on the bike rack. Great product and always pleased with etrailer's customer service!

by:

My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns.

The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others.

by:

We used this to be able to take our golf cart in the bed of our truck while pulling our travel trailer. This extender allowed us to have the tailgate down for the golf cart. It worked perfect and even had a couple people come up to us wondering how we were able to bring our golf cart. Before this we had to take 2 vehicles or just not take the golf cart.

Second one I purchased, great product!! Great customer service!!

by:

I purchased the extended adapter to better fit an e Bike Rack that was not stable with the normal adapter. This new extender does add stability to the bike rack.

by:

Fast delivery, solid gear. This is not only a 7" extension, but an adapter from 2 1/2" to 2" receiver to use equipment that I already have such as bike carrier and vise insert. Works great! I opted for the heavier version (why not) in case I needed to tow a small trailer. As always, very pleased with etrailer and their support.

by:

This is great. It works fine. I wish there was a shorter version. Maybe 5”inches instead of 7”.

by:

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product.

by:

It was great that it was delivered a few less than expected.

by:

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains.

It has been holding up very well and I would recommend it to any one.

Looks like it's going to be a good product for me. The right length extension plus it eliminates the need for the factory sleeve to reduce from 2 1/2 to 2 inches.

One year out and used nearly every day of my seamless gutter business season. No problems at all.

by:

Works awesome, and I like the personal follow up.

by:

My delivery package was ripped open and the contents missing thanks to USPS. The courier should have never deliverd the package in that condition. When I called etrailer customer service I could not have asked for a more responsive solution. Carol immediately asked if I wanted them to send out another order at no additional charge and I agreed. I also asked her if she would ship using a different carrier and she said that would be no problem. I promptly recieved my second package undamaged with the contents safe inside. I am extremely satisfied with the product and I cannot say enough for the excellent customer service I recieved. I would definetly recommend etrailer to anyone and I will be using them again in the future.

by:

I can now pull my boat with my camper

by:

Product is very high quality. There was a small shipping delay, but etrailer was excellent at keeping me informed of the delay and when to expect product. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Excellent

by:

The Hitch Reducer works fine, my only complaint is it has a lot of play between the hitch and reducer. Tried to shim, my Thule bike rack really moves around going down the road.
When you hit a bump rally jars the bike rack. Also wish it had another adjustment hole, I have a new dodge 2500 hits the spare tire, if it would extend farther into the receiver this may help with the play in the reducer. Service was great though

by:

Well built and strong. I think I ordered the 8 inch but I wish there was other size options. With 8 inch hitch on my 6000 pound trailer I felt lots of clunking back there while towing on Mtn roads. I may cut the adapter shorter and re-drill the hole. I only needed 4-5 inches so my tailgate would open with my old camper. I also bought hitch clamps from hits clam.com which helped.

by:

working great and was everything that was advertised and in the video!

by:

I used this extender to entendres my weight distribution hitch for my travel trailer. It worked great. It allows me to leave my tailgate down without any chance of damaging it. Plenty of radius when turning. I allowed 1/3 weight reduction on my hitch from 3300 lbs to 2200 lbs which still allowed the 600 lb trailer tongue weight well in the safe range to operate. I have to leave the tailgate down to haul my golf cart in my short bed Ram truck.

by:

I pull an 8,000lb camper with a 900lb hitch weight. I us an equalizer hitch, and after adding this extender (F250 has 2 1/2" hitch) I'm able to fully open my tailgate that was previously hitting the front jack. I don't notice in difference in pulling, even on the freeway at 75 mph. Made heavy duty, would recommend.

  • Tongue Weight Capacity When Using Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender
Using the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 will drop that 1,200 down to this extenders max tongue weight with WDH of 1,000 lbs. The other thing you have to keep in mind is the reduction in hitch capacity since you're using an extender. This particular extender will reduce your hitch capacity by 1/3. More than likely this won't be an issue but if you can't afford to lose capacity you'll have to go a different route. There are no extended WDH shanks for a 2-1/2" hitch so you would...

  • Hitch Extender for 10,000 lb Travel Trailer Compatibility
I wish you would have asked this question prior to your purchase of the Curt Extender # C45791, because this extender will not work for your application. It is rated for the 3,500 lb total trailer weight towing capacity and because it is an adapter will also decrease your tongue weight rating of your trailer hitch by 50%. Instead, you may want to consider the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitch # BH20. This ball mount is capable of towing 10,000 lbs and has a measurement of 13-1/4 inches...

  • How to Use the Thule T2 Bike Rack with a 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch
You are on the right track. The only way we have that will allow you to use the Thule T2 Pro Xtr Bike Platform Rack part # TH69TX with the 2.5" receiver tube opening on your truck would be with adapter. For this, I recommend the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender part # HR26. This adapter offers both a reducer from 2.5" to 2" and an extension of 7" from the center of each hitch pin hole. This 7" extension will have more than enough room for the shank of the T2 to securely rest inside. It...

  • Can The Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack Be Used On a Class V, 2-1/2 Receiver?
The Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack # TH903202 will only fit a 1-1/4" or 2" receiver directly. You can use a Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 that will allow for the stinger to fit on your vehicle. The stinger that holds the rack into the receiver will not work on a 2-1/2" or 3" receiver. The Curt Anti-Rattle Hitch Clamp # C87UR will take the rattle out of the extender and allow for the entire bike rack to be solid as it has its own built in anti-rattle for the 2" or 1-1/4" receivers....

  • Availability Of 2-1/2" To 2" Hitch Reducer With 4" Extension Rated For 12,000 lbs
Hey Jeff, thanks for reaching out. That is a pretty tall order. We do have 2-1/2" to 2" hitch extenders, but nothing rated for 12,000 lbs. The closest thing would be the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 which is 7" long and rated for 5,000 lbs. We have reducers that go from 2-1/2" to 2" such as part # BWRHXA2182 but this is not an extension. There would not be any 12k rated 4" extensions though. What are you using this for exactly? The Curt Premium 5-Bike Rack # C18065 is not difficult to install and remove but it will take more time than other 5-bike racks. The reason for this is it uses a threaded anti-wobble hitch pin to lock inside your hitch that needs to be screwed in and unscrewed to install and remove the rack. If you do want to save some time and effort the better option is the Thule Apex XT 5-Bike Rack # TH9026XT, with the trade-off for the convenience the Apex XT offers being a larger price tag. Hello Lonnie, sadly, we do not. The only extension we have for a 2-1/2" hitch would be a 7" long 2-1/2" to 2" reducer like part # HR26. This will insert into the 2-1/2" hitch but the other end is a standard 2" receiver. It is rated for 5,000 lbs towing and 500 tongue weight. We do not have anything that would be a straight 2-1/2" extension.

You are correct, however, that the your standard hitch reducer sleeve isn't going to work, so what you will need instead is a different reducer from Brophy: - Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # HR26 Because it extends out, what this Brophy adapter does is essentially give you a 2" hitch on your F-250 so you can mount the T2 Pro # TH83JV....

Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 6" Long Item # HR26 is at a fixed length no matter if you are strictly reducing or are also extending. It only has the 2 sets of pin holes; one set to pin the adapter into the hitch and one set for the accessory in the end of the adapter. Yes, anytime you use a hitch extender or reducer like # HR26 you will lose about 1/3 of your hitches overall capacity. However, since you'll be towing a trailer that weighs between 4,500 to 5,000 lbs, the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 will still work fine because it has a 5,000 lb max capacity.
