Will Curt RockerBall Work With Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount With 8 Inch Drop

Updated 08/06/2021 | Published 08/04/2021

Question:

Hi there, Wonder if you can lend a hand with piecing together the best possible hitch and ball combo. I recently lifted my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 inches and primarily the only thing I pull is our pop-up camper. I believe my old hitch was a 6 inch and I like the Convert-A-Ball hitch. When I do the measurements of receiver to ground and trailer tongue to ground and Im getting a measurement of 10 inches needed for a drop in the hitch. I seemed to have had some sag with the hitch being too low before mainly after attaching to the Jeep, the weight caused some off balance, even with heavy duty shocks. I was looking at a 8 inch Convert-A-Ball hitch teamed with a Curt RockerBall Shock Absorber. Now looking at that Curt RockerBall it seems like it sits up higher than a normal ball. Should I incorporate the height of the Curt RockerBall in my decision for hitch ? Would shorting the hitch drop counteract that sag and bring it back in balance? Is the Curt RockerBall over kill with the Convert-A-Ball hitch? Thanks for the help!

Ok, let's start with the Curt RockerBall, which is actually not going to be compatible with a cushioned ball mount, which the Convert-A-Ball is - for stability, the RockerBall can only be used with a standard ball mount. You would normally take the added height of the RockerBall into account, yes, but there isn't a standard ball mount with the drop you need to use the RockerBall, so I recommend instead going with the cushioned Convert-A-Ball ball mount and standard hitch ball.

If you have some sag, you can counteract that somewhat by going to a ball mount with less drop, though it isn't really a remedy; the best way to accomplish this is with a weight distribution system. That said, you can go with a ball mount with 8 inch drop, so what you would need for a Convert-A-Ball and 2 inch hitch ball are the following:

- Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 6-3/4" Rise, 8" Drop # AMSC8

- 2" Hitch Ball # 40038

You will also need a pin and clip or hitch lock to secure the ball mount in your hitch, and I do recommend the lock, though I'll give you the options for both:

- etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" Hitches # e98880

- Pin and Clip # C21500
