Correct SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs For 5k Axles & Should Trailer be Hitched For Measurement

Question:
I want to add the SumoSprings Trailer helper springs to our fifth wheel and will order them from eTrailer in a couple of days. When I do the measurements from the spring plate to the frame rail, do I need to hook our fifth wheel up to the truck, and raise our landing gear in order to put all the trailer weight on the ground? Or do I take a measurement just as it sits, level, but with weight on the landing gear? Hope the question makes sense! Our 2020 Jayco Eagle HT fifth wheel has gross axle weight ratings of 5,145 pounds, so I’m assuming I would need the heavier rated SumoSprings for this application—is that correct? Also, I saw in the description for the product that SumoSprings would “raise the height of the trailer”. I cannot afford for my fifth wheel to be any higher off the ground as it will barely fit under our RV port now. How much would it raise it, please? Thanks for the reply!

Those are good questions, and let's go ahead and start with the correct helper springs; since you have axles that are just over 5,000 lbs you do want the heavier option:
- SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs - 5K to 8K - Overslung # SS26MV
As for the measurement, I reached out to SumoSprings, and what they said was when taking that measurement you do want to be hitched, and the measurement is best taken on how you would use the trailer, so long as it is level, which means your landing gear does not need to be down.
I also asked them about the lift, and they said it won't give much lift if at all; essentially what raising the ride height means is that when your trailer frame lowers from weight or sway, the SumoSprings # SS26MV engage, so the ride height will be "higher" than without the springs.
