You are absolutely right with how you can upgrade your older B&W Companion 3000 model to the newer B&W Companion 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3500.
Since the head unit is the same on both hitches you can make the upgrade to the newest model simply by purchasing the Replacement Base for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVB3500.
