Question:
I have a 2016 Acadia. I recently added a hitch and trailer lights. My question is do I need a towing package added to my vehicle or is it safe to tow?

The towing capacity of a 2016 GMC Acadia is 2,000 lbs for models without the factory trailer towing package (V92 Trailer Towing Package) and 5,200 lbs for models with the factory trailer tow package (V92 Trailer Towing Package).
If you don't have the factory trailer towing package but still need to tow a trailer, you can do so with a trailer hitch the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98863 and a wiring harness the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118271. Furthermore, if the trailer is over 1,000 lbs it will need to have brakes per the owner's manual therefore the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 is also needed.
The above components will give you everything you need to tow a trailer but keep in mind you will still be limited to 2,000 lbs since it is not the factory trailer towing package which also comes with additional built-in engine and transmission coolers.
