Will Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit Help With Up and Down Movement Of Trailer

Updated 01/29/2020 | Published 01/26/2020

Question:

I have a Grand Design 2600rb and a 1/2 Chevy. Ive been getting a good bit of up/down oscillations after hitting bumps. Ive confirmed my equalizer hitch is set up correctly. I installed a RoadMaster Active Suspension kit and set it at 1mm. Ive replaced all 4 shocks on the truck with bilsteins. I am considering this or cre3000 kit. Which would help more? Should I go in a different direction like sumo springs or a shock kit? If so, which ones?

It sounds like you’re dealing with that classic up and down “porpoising” after bumps, and honestly you’ve already done a lot of the right things on the truck side. Since you’ve added the Roadmaster Active Suspension and upgraded to Bilsteins, the next improvement is most likely going to come from controlling the trailer suspension movement itself rather than adding more support to the truck.

For your setup, I would lean toward the MORryde CRE3000 equalizer system over adding SumoSprings right now. The CRE3000 is designed specifically to absorb road shock and smooth out that repeated bounce by adding rubber cushioning and additional suspension travel into the trailer suspension. MORryde states it provides over 3 inches of suspension travel, which helps take the sharp rebound out of bumps.

A very common and proven combo is pairing the CRE3000 with a wet bolt kit so the suspension articulates more smoothly and holds up better long term. Depending on your axle spacing, the two most common options are the MORryde CRE3000 kit part # MR87ZR for 35 inch wheelbase trailers or part # MR27ZR for 33 inch wheelbase trailers. For the wet bolt and shackle upgrade, the MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit part # MR46ZR is a great match for many tandem axle trailers.

Once that is in place, if you still feel some movement, then it would make sense to look at adding a trailer shock kit next since shocks are what really control the rebound after a bump. SumoSprings can also help, but they are more about adding support than controlling that up and down oscillation, so I would consider those after the suspension upgrades.

With the Cre3000 kit, the qualifier sheet had 6 or 7 measurements I had to take to ensure theyd fit and have clearance. One of them was the space between the top of the tire and the floor of the RV. Mine has more than the 3 the Morryde kit called for, but I dont remember how much more off hand. Will the added travel of this equalizer require additional clearance to avoid tire contact with the underside of the RV? The attached instructions dont appear to address that.My shackles are 2 1/4 and Id like to replace them with a wet bolt kit. Should I go with the Morryde kit for that, or is there a more suitable choice?

We do not carry this kit from MORryde, but we do carry another kit that we have had very good reviews on. It is the Dexter EZ Flex equalizer. It is a cushioned equalizer that will replace your factory equalizer without changing the travel of your axles. If you have a tandem axle trailer, there are two options available # K71-652-00 and # K71-653-00. To make sure you get the correct size kit you will need to measure between the two points on the equalizer where the leaf spring shackles attach. It will either be 5 5/8"(6k axles) or 7 3/4"(8k axles) center on center. The other great part about this kit is that it is going to come with replacement metal bushings and wet bolts.
