Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - K71-653-00 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the EZ Flex heavy duty rubber suspension system. This system is available for tandem axle applications with part number K71-653-00 and for triple axle applications with part number K71-657-00. It replaces standard trailer equalizers and spring suspensions. This is designed for 1 and 3/4 inch wide double eye leaf springs. It's going to deliver smoother towing when compared to traditional leaf spring suspension systems. It's going to feature this nice rubber core.

This isolates and absorbs damaging road shocks before they hit the trailer frame and the contents of the trailer. The rubber core is going to last a long time and it won't be affected by the elements. It's an easy installation, it does not require welding, cutting or grinding of the trailer frame. It's going to include all of the hardware needed for your installation. The system itself is made from a very strong durable steel construction. It's going to feature a protective finish that's going to keep everything safe from the elements, so you won't have to worry about rust or corrosion.

This system does offer multiple grease zerk fittings for easy maintenance. You'll notice that on all of the bolt heads here on the shackles, we're going to have grease zerk fittings. On the new hardware, this hardware attaches to the other end of the leaf spring that would not attach to the equalizer. It's going to come with your new bushings, your new hardware and each bolt head's going to have a greased zerk fitting on it. Then on the equalizer itself there's going to be 2 greased zerk fittings, so it allows for easy maintenance. This is going to ensure that your set up is always well lubricated and quiet in all the moving components.

It's very easy to apply grease, you just attach a grease gun, pump in the grease, and it's going to lubricate the moving components. This is going to replace Dexter Standard Equalizer 13-122. If your equalizer has that number stamped on it, then this system is going to work great for your trailer. If you can not find a stamped number, or if you have a different brand of equalizer, then you'll want to take a few measurements to verify that this system will fit your application. For instance, your axle spacing must have a separation of 35 inches from the center of one axle to the center of the other. The distance between the lower bolt holes on this system will flex between 7 and 1/4 inches and 8 and 1/4 inches; and the bolt hole diameters are 9/16ths of an inch.

So if the spacing of the holes on your equalizer is between those measurements, and the bolt holes have a diameter of 9/16ths of an inch, then this is going to work for your application. Again, those bolt holes that we're measuring from is from the center of this one to the center of this one, those lower holes on your equalizer. The shackles themselves, these are included, all the shackles necessary. These are going to have a length measurement from the center of bolt hole to the center of the other bolt hole, of 2 and 1/4 inches. These are designed for axles that have a capacity up to 8,000 pounds. That's 8,000 pounds per axle. I went ahead and assembled it just to show you what it's going to look like and give you a good idea how it works. We'll go over all the components that it comes with. It's going to come with these bolts right here, again, these are going to attach to the other end of the spring that does not attach to the equalizer. Comes with the bolts, the new bushings and the new nuts to get those installed. You're also going to get all of the necessary shackle straps and the hardware necessary to attach to the equalizer and to your leaf spring. Again, it's going to come with the new bushings, those would go in the eye of the spring, and it's going to come with the bolts pre-installed in the shackle. You'll need to put this shackle on, put the bolts through and then tighten all of the hardware. I do want to mention that these bolts have the splines on them, so that means that these bolts will have to be driven into the mounting location. Also here, it's going to come with the new center bolt, this is for the equalizer to be suspended from the center hanger. That's also got the splines on it, that will need to be driven into the location as well. It's going to come with a new nut to get all of that installed also. Really nice design, and again, it's got all of the zerk fittings on it, which is going to allow for easy maintenance. It's going to keep all of those moving components well lubricated, which is going to benefit when it comes to having a quieter system. That's going to do it for today's look at the EZ Flex Heavy Duty rubber suspension system.

This is for people that USE a trailer. If you replace shackle links and equalizers once a year, this is for you. Mine showed up with some spring eye bushings missing, so the packing could be improved. Surprisingly, they wouldn't send me replacements or sell them separately. I ordered them from another vendor and installed the kit. Grease it every now and again and no wear to the pins or shackles so far. Well worth the money if your trailer is on the road every day. 496077

Still as good as new. I would say it would be nice if the trailer didnt have [] axles because the equalizer is very close to the ground, but I have only dragged it hard once and it didnt hurt it that I can tell. Highly recommended if you daily your trailer.

Installed on my wife's 2-horse gooseneck trailer with living quarters, along with flip kit for axle to raise trailer for leveling with higher truck. My wife believes the ride was much smoother for the horses based on less anxiety in horse's demeanor when unloading after trip. 315247

etrailer is probably the best one stop trailer solution on the web. I just fabricated my own deck over dovetail tailed from scratch. I ordered just about everything I needed for the build. The sales staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend etrialer to anyone weather your rebuilding your trailer or fabricating a new trailer, they pretty much have everything your looking for with very good pricing and they stand behind every product they sell. 359320

Just installed, no road test yet. Product appears well made and heavy duty, Dexters packaging could have been better, some of the plating was worn or scratched off of the equilizers, cosmetic only. Shipping was prompt and complete. 156609

Haven't installed yet but looks like a quality part wish they would send the heavy duty shackles for the other ends of the springs. Everything is now heavy duty except for the ends if the springs that attach to the trailer frame rails. 235522

The staff was very prompt and courteous. I received the product within three working days and am very satisfied with the etrailer service and the product. High quality and has made a world of difference with the quality I feel while towing my FZ322 toy hauler loaded or empty. Much heavier system that rides smoother and more quiet than the manufacturers suspension. 454958

Perfectly much improved ride. With the grease fittings and heavy duty construction and regular maintenance approximately every 5,000 miles there isn’t any evidence of wear in the shackles or pins. Well worth the money spent.

This is an excellent upgrade for any trailer suspension. The bushings in mine were worn out so it was time for a rebuild. All the parts are first class and everything fit together perfect. Don't get in a rush and allow yourself plenty of time. The improvement in the ride was noticeable right away on our first trip of 400 miles...and it was a joy. This rebuild was done on a 1997 Alpenlite 34' fifth wheel 538869

This is probably one of the best products you can buy when fixing up a trailer where everything is egged out and wasted. Bear in mind that all spring hangers need to have the same dimesnsion from the bottom of the frame to the center of the holes. I didn't know this until the instructions revealed that. If your center hanger is tall, and end hangers are short, your springs will sit at an angle. So, provided all your hangers are the same, it's a quick swap. If they don't match, there will be welding required as well as a bunch of measuring and fabrication. 315219

Great product. As an industrial designer (retired), ...kept the machine shop, I dread the quality of pretty much everything I order. Sure, one bronze bushing needed to be pressed in further and a nut was missing due to UPS's classic handling, but the end product can only be described as 'OVERKILL'. Thanks for saving one very poorly designed Lamar dump load trailer ...requiring an axle flip to have any suspension travel at all. 561493

Great service, questions answered promptly and accurately, package arrived before the promised time. I had no problems installing the product as the fitment was exact thanks to etrailer product recommendation. Installation of this item should be done by an accomplished mechanic and in a well equipped shop. My 5th wheel is 32' long and the installation requires at least 3 jacks to lift the trailer and axles and to manuver the axle height in order to install the pivot bolts. Product smoothed out ride to some degree but the reason for my installation was due to worn out bushings which made a click/pop noise while driving over uneven surfaces. 234675

Delivery was as promised and all parts were there. Great service. Raised 5th wheel 4 3/4 inches so it would be level when hooked up to 2016 Ram 2500. 350389

I purchased this to replace the worn EZ Flex suspension on our 2011 Heartland Bighorn. The original EZ Flex was not a wet bolt, so I figured this was a good upgrade. I have read that Dexter had a bad batch of equalizer rubber and ours was definitely evident of that. The bumper material had completely collapsed and cracked such that the equalizers were hitting metal-to-metal. The nylon bushings and bolts were in good shape but the bronze bushings in the equalizers were worn through on the inner edges. We have towed our 5th wheel about 20,000 miles, coast-to-coast. I was surprised at the wear seen. Installation went well with one broken bronze spring bushing requiring a reorder. The rest of the installation worked well. I used two bottle jacks (20 ton for frame, 6 ton for one axle) and a floor jack for the second axle. A C-Clamp came in handy to center the spring on the bracket for bolt installation. 3-4 pumps of grease for each of the fittings. We'll see if it helps in a couple of weeks on Michigan spring roads. 491247

We have a Sandpiper mid bunk 5er we bought 2 years ago as we upgraded from a travel trailer. As the driver I could immediately tell the improved handling pulling a 5th Wheel over the travel trailer. However, that was the extent of joy going to the fifth wheel. For two years we suffered with a bumpy ride as we towed our camper around the southeast. We began our journey to improve the ride with the Lippert flex air pin box which made a difference, but we were not satisfied. Next we moved from a standard equalizer system to the Dexter Ez Flex and the wet bolts. I will say we also upgraded our tires to the Goodyear endurance’s tires at the same time. Our first trip was 400 miles through some inner city interstates and some smooth interstates. The combination of all three components working together ( the pin box, tires, and dexter Ez flex system) made the ride enjoyable once more. My wife said that it felt like it used to when we towed our travel trailers. Now I will say it took money to get the ride we wanted, but it was worth it for the amount we use and paid for our RV. Please note that you will lose a little ride height moving from a standard equalizer to the dexter. In my case I lost somewhere around an inch based on my best guess, but I did not measure before and after. Overall I’m thrilled with the improvement we noticed. 572609

Wow what an improvement over the last shackles and equalizers I had. I had called mthe business that put on my last shackles and asked them if there was anything better as they only lasted a year and a half. He said no, so I looked on-line myself and found etrailer and talked to their service rep. I ordered the complete package and I was so impressed with the quality. The big thing for me was the grease zerks and the size of the shackles. My brother-in law and I installed these on both sides in about 3 1/2 hours. We spent a lot of time looking for the proper tools to try to make things easier. The second side was done in about and hour. Great product at a good price. 625326

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

The installation is pretty straight forward, however with the trailer weigh and spring strengths it was quiet a lot of work. I have air tools and jacks to work with and it took about six hours. Didn't realize how bad my bushing were worn until it was apart. Camper is a 2013 with about 15000 miles and the plastic bushing were considerably worn. With E-Z flex installed, all the creaking noise is gone, tows a lot smother, still some chucking, but well worth the money and time. Great product and great service from etrailer. Thanks 267849

Would have loved to write a great review as the product appears to be well built and I like the ability to lube all the spring shackles. Unfortunately one of the bolt patterns does not fit my trailer. It would help if ALL the bolt hole measurements would be displayed in one place - so that you would know prior to ordering if things would fit. 234003

Ordered on Sunday it arrived on Friday and installed on Saturday went in easy, hardest part of this job is jack up the trailer. I used two jacks and lots of wooden blocks . All parts fit perfectly every thing was there no complaints. Going on the road next weekend to test the ride of my trailer, hope this will fix my rough riding trailer. It took me 5 hours to install this kit and adjust my brakes , I'm 60 years old so you can do this yourself 570169

I've not actually towed on this product yet as I only just installed it. The product is solid and easy to fit with clear instructions that make installation easy. I chose to replace the leaf springs at the same time. Like others have mentioned in reviews, the packing isn't just terrible, it is completely absent. The heavy contents are just tossed in a box and while that is bad enough, it presents a significant risk to the grease fittings on the EZ-Flex unit. Dexter (not etrailer) need to get that sorted out. I'd have given 5* if it wasn't for that issue. 565951

So far so good. Survived the first 1000 miles since installation without any problems. The wet bolt system has quieted the suspension on the trailer considerably. No more low speed squeaks/squeals or groaning from suspension flex in tight turns and bumpy roads. The hard rubber baby buggy bumper pads between the opposing arms are holding up well and do absorb some of the road hazard shock rather than transferring the impact directly to the trailer frame and contents. Really big bumps still rearrange the contents in the back of the trailer, but everything rides nice otherwise. 385807

I think they will be great. They are installed and I will be traveling soon on the new suspension. Thank you etrailer for youyr good products RV manufacturers are totally missing the boat and have absolutely no regard to quality in regards to the cheap suspension parts they put into these trailers. It just does not make any sense to put such cheap bushings. As far as I am concerned the whole RV manufacturing industry are very inconsiderate of there retail customers. 229233

Replacement of original 10 year old equalizers was fairly easy except for the old bushings in the springs, it took a lot of beating. Did not follow the instructions to remove axles, did 1 side at a time. I did replace the straight grease zerks and installed 90 deg zerks, instructions said the zerks were 1/4 28 thread, that is wrong they are 6mm 100 pitch thread. Great product will be ordering more parts soon. 556086

I installed this Dexter E-Z Flex om my Keystone Cougar in about 5.5 hours in my driveway. I also installed the complete wet-bolt kit at the same time. I have taken many trips since installing this, including a trip from Cali to Yellowstone and back, and I have to say the quality of the ride has improves so much that it is near perfect! The rough roads and pothole are handled so much easier and I have less fatigue at the end of each days drive. Getting under the rig to lube these has been very easy and keeps things smooth and quiet. Do this upgrade! You won't be disappointed! 323299

I put this set-up on both my tandem boat trailer and a 7,000# enclosed construction trailer. Prio to the boat trailer was experiencing a blow-out virtually every other trip. Thought I had a tire problem. After rebuilding the suspension system... Blow-outs are a thing of the past. Trailer tracks extremely well in curves at high speeds. On the construction trailer I had a spring eye bolt fall out after installing this kit. I have no idea how or why but I always give the trailer a look over any time I stop. Did a mcGyver to get it back to the shop where I installed a standard suspension bolt. Been going that way ever since... 269088

Some of the wet bolts dont lube well at all. But that was the case when new. Otherwise, all is good on both trailers. Still glad I made the upgrade.

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

The EZ Flex equalizers did everything as expected. The shipping for this kit was subpar. The hardware was not packaged and all the parts beat each other during the shipping process. Also, there was 2 packets of copper colored grease that got punctured during shipping (due to zero packing/bubble wrap) and that messed up the majority of the instructions. I contacted 3 different people with Etraier (Adam, George and Angela) and neither were apologetic to how I received my package. I did however receive a canned response of "without honest feedback from valued customers like you we would not know where we need to make improvements" and I was expecting just a little more from Etrailer. The level of customer service prior to buying is top notch. I will give them that. 436306

We replaced the leaf springs and the equalizers at the same time with products from etrailer.com. The Dexter equalizers were much better than the stock product and easy to install. The leaf springs were exactly the same as those we could purchase locally and at a significantly reduced price. Well done etrailer. 501835

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I found the hardware so much hardier then the original hardware. I read several articles about replacing the poorly equipped suspension hardware on campers that can leave you stranded and with a long camping trip coming soon I didn't want to take chances with the old suspension components and with the idea that the Dexter E-Z Flex system will help with smoothing the ride is why I went this way. Your sites reviews and installation videos were very helpful. My camper has LCI axles so I had to check through your reviews so make sure the E-Z Flex would work with my axles. I did find my answer and the E-Z Flex fit perfect. The directions that came with the E-Z Flex were only good for the torque settings. Your video was much more helpful. It took me longer then expected, mostly because I should of had heavier jacks and jack stands and had to improvise some. I haven't had the camper out on the road yet so I cannot comment on the ride, but it feels good knowing that I have a really good suspension under the camper now. Overall I am very pleased with the product and with your help selecting and installing it. 368934

About as simple a swap as you could expect. Tear off all your old stuff, throw all the new stuff on and voila! A couple of floor jacks, and 2 hrs max. Great time to swap out your junk Chinese wheel bearings too. No major ride change or anything, but at least I know the links aren't going to fail like the OEM ones did. See pic. 285667

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I was reading about suspension upgrades in an RV newsletter and I decided to check the Dexter EZ Flex out. After reading the reviews and viewing the installation videos on your website, I took some measurements and decided that these would work the best for my 2017, 28ft Pioneer Toy Hauler. It has tandem 4400# Dexter axles and springs and was a direct replacement for the stock equalizers. It took me 4hrs from the time I unpacked the parts to finishing the job. The installation video is right on and that made set up for the job pretty straight forward. Jackstands(4), a couple of 8t bottle jacks, air impact wrench/sockets, torque wrench, combination wrenches, lead hammer, grease gun, anti seize and some cribbing and you will be able to get the job done. The kit and parts are so much more robust than the stock hardware that comes with the trailer and should be much better than what came stock. I will report back once I get some miles on the road and tell you what I think of how it pulls and handles the bumps! 357303

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I just opened the box and was disappointed to see that everything was just thrown in the box. Just looking at it it looks like some of the threads are damaged from the way everything is packaged. It will be a while before I will be installing this product. I want to say that the service from etrailers was outstanding!! From fast shipping and great price I couldn't be happier with etrailer. 475693

Review from a similar Dexter Axle E-Z Flex in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

After a year and 20,000 miles, this was one of the best upgrades in towing and ride on my 42' fifth wheel. It took out a lot of the small bumps that would open cabinet's and knock things over in the shelves. Another great advantage is the bronze bushings are greasable and do not squeak like the OEM plastic, the OEM bushings had around 3000 miles and we're already worn through, the bronze if kept greased will probably last the life of the trailer. 438995

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension
Do you have a question about this Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension?

  • How to Determine Which Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizer Kit is Correct for a Trailer
  • To determine which Dexter E-Z Flex suspension system you need for your trailer you will simply need to choose whether your trailer has tandem or triple axles, as well as the length of your current equalizers. For a tandem axle trailer we have part # K71-652-00 which is 5-5/8" long, and part # K71-653-00 which is 7-3/4" long. For a triple axle trailer we have part # K71-656-00 which is 5-5/8" long, and part # K71-657-00 which is 7-3/4" long. I have attached some installation and...

  • Will The Equa- Flex or E-Z Flex Equalizers Increase the Height of My Dutchman Kodiak Trailer?
  • Your current clearance measurement is concerning. You should have about 4.5 inches from the top of your tire to the floor in order for you to have adequate clearance from bumps when traveling. Either the Lippert Equa-Flex ,part # LC279688, or the Dexter E-Z Flex, part # K71-653-00, will work for your trailer, even though they are rated for heavier weights. But increasing the height of the equalizers alone would not be sufficient. You would also need to increase the height of your spring...

  • Replacement Equalizer Needed for Dexter Axle Equalizer 13-142
  • If you are simply needing to replace some worn equalizers then we actually do carry the part you are searching for. It is listed as part # K13-142-02 on our site and is a direct replacement for the 13-142 equalizer that you referenced. I confirmed this with my contact at Dexter Axle. If you are looking to upgrade your current equalizers then no, there is no equalizer upgrade we currently carry that will directly fit the large dimensions that you referenced. You would have to change out...

  • Does Trailer Equalizer Suspension System Add Height To Trailer?
  • We have suspension systems similar to the Moryde that I can give you dimensions for. These systems aren't designed to give you and increased height although they may add a couple inches depending on the height of the equalizers you are replacing. The Lippert Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers for Tandem Axle - 6K to 8K # LC279688 are similar to the CRE3000 system. They will give you 5 inches from the center bolt to the shackle strap locations. I've attached a picture to help. Another...

  • Could Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizer Replace Morryde CRE 3000
  • The Morrydy CRE3000 is a similar setup to the EZ Flex setup so there wouldn't be any problem going from one to the other. It would just be a matter of picking out the correct setup based on the dimensions of your current equalizers. You are going to have to measure your current equalizers to find the correct one. The part # K71-653-00 is a replacement for a 7-3/4 inch equalizer and the part # K71-652-00 is a replacement for a 5-5/8 inch equalizer. You will need to measure the dimensions...

  • Dexter EZ Flex Equalizers for 6,000 Pound Axles on a 2006 Heartland Bighorn 5th Wheel
  • The length is good on the EZ Flex system # K71-653-00 but the height may be different depending on where you are measuring that 4-3/4 inches. On the EZ Flex the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center line between the 2 bottom holes, straight up and down, is 2-7/8 inches. If your 4-3/4 inch measurement is diagonal then you will be good to go with this kit. For a u-bolt kit you can use # APUBR-9. The shocks might actually feel more effective with the EZ Flex kit...

  • Replacement Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers for Dexter Equalizer Part 13-122
  • The Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers part # LC279688 would indeed be the best fit replacement for the Dexter Equalizers part 13-122 you have now. However, as you mentioned the vertical bolt spacing will be about 2" taller which does indeed mean that the trailer will be raised but not necessarily the full 2". If you are looking for a cushioned equalizer upgrade that would not raise the trailer I recommend taking a look at the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System by Dexter Axle part...

  • Recommendation to Replace Double Eye Leaf Springs on Montana 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I am happy to get your Montana 5th Wheel Trailer all set up with new suspension components. When picking out replacement leaf springs, it is important to keep in mind that older springs will have stretched out a bit from their original length. This difference likely won't quite be the 1-1/8 inch difference between the 26 inch measurement you took on your springs and the 24-7/8 inch Double-Eye Springs # SP-222275 you referenced, but it is still a good idea to select a leaf spring stack...

  • The Bronze Bushings - Qty. 4 # K71-291-00 will work well with the wet bolts # 34007-187-00 which are 3-5/8 inches long. The usable length is 2-1/4 inches which will work well with the bronze bushings that are 1.74 inches long. The neverfail bushings cannot be used with wet bolts as it will break down the bushings. • The E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System by Dexter Axle - 5-5/8" Equalizers # K71-652-00 is my recommendation and will work well on your 2019 Forest River 242 SLC as long as the current equalizers are shorter than 6-1/4 inches center to center. If the equalizer width is longer, then you will want to use # K71-653-00 instead which has a width range of 7-1/4 inches to 8-1/4 inches. • Leaf Spring Recommendation for Trailer with 5,200 lb Dexter Axles
  • Are you looking for replacement leaf springs since you said you broke the one you have now which measures 26-1/4 inches yet seems to be pretty flat. We have the leaf spring part # SP-111275 which is 25-1/4 inches long and is rated for a 6,000 lb axle which would be closest match to your 5,200 lb Dexter axles. Since springs flatten out and get longer over time this is most likely the correct size you'd need. Most likely the EZ Flex equalizer you installed is the part # K71-653-00 based...

  • Recommended Dexter Suspension Kit for 7,000 Pound Tandem Axles on Toy Hauler
  • For the 7,000 pound axles on your Cyclone Toy Hauler I really like the Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit # K71-653-00. If you currently have standard equalizers on your suspension you will feel the difference immediately with the E-Z Flex units because of the rubber core that will greatly reduce chucking as well as absorb road shock during travel.
