Video Transcript for Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension Kit Review and Installation

Jake: Hey, guys! It's Jake here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to show you how to install the Dexter Easy Flex system. This is going to allow you to put a new equalizer in to be able to give you a nice, smooth ride compared to that stock equalizer that'll have come on your trailer. This Dexter equalizer is going to upgrade your equalizer for a smoother ride while the rubber core is going to minimize the back-and-forth movement of your trailer and helps to absorb some of that road shock. Now, what I like about this system is that it's going to differ in two different ways from your factory system. It's going to have that rubber bumper to absorb the shock from the road, so it doesn't transfer through the trailer and into the cab of your vehicle. You're also going to have wet bolts connecting all your moving parts with nice, handy grease zerks on the outside so that you can keep all your moving parts well-lubricated. Here's a good look at the comparison between the old equalizer and our new Dexter equalizer.

You can see the shock absorber in the middle that's going to help to give a lot smoother ride. The old bushings we're taking out are going to be a nylon bushing, which have the tendency to wear over time. So, you want to make sure you keep track of them, make sure you keep them up to par.Our new bushings are going to be a brass bushing, so it's going to hold up a lot longer and our bolts are all going to have grease zerks on them to be able to keep them well-lubricated. You are going to have heavy-duty shackles that come in the kit that's going to help to support the heavy suspension that this is going to be able to take on. With that being said, the whole construction of the system is also going to be heavy-duty steel so you're not going to have to worry about any of the parts being compromised. The bronze finish on the outside of this equalizer is going to help to resist corrosion.

If you have a tandem axle setup like we have here, there's going to be a 6,000-pound and 8,000-pound kit available. The kit we have here is going to be an 8,000-pound, so it's going to be a little bit heavier duty to be able to support that weight. It's also going to be available for triple axle trailers in both six and 8,000 pounds. Just see etrailer. Now, if you're wondering how to determine what size kit you're going to need, whether it be the 6,000 or the 8,000-pound kit, we measured between our axles. You need to either get 33 or 35 inches between your axle spacing.

The 35 inches is going to be your 8,000-pound kit, and the 33 inches is going to be your 6,000-pound kit. We have kits available for both. Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's go ahead and show you how we got it installed. To start our install, we're going to start by removing our wheels from our trailer. Now we're going to remove our five bolts from our equalizer so that we can get our new equalizer in place.Go ahead and remove our plates and our bolts. Now, we can remove our equalizer, now that our leaf springs are removed. inaudible 00:03:30 And we can slide our equalizer in place, slide our bolt through.Thread on our nut on the other side. When you're putting the nuts on the back side of the assembly, you want to make sure you squirt in a little bit of anti-seize. They do include you with two of these packets, but it should be more than enough for both sides. And we'll wait to tighten that until we have everything else assembled.

Next, we'll need to take a pin or the old bolt that you pulled out of this hole to knock this bushing out, because we'll be replacing it with these new brass bushings. To get your new bushing in place, you want to stick it in place, take one of your old bolts, slide it in, and tap it into place. If you do it until it bottoms out the bolt, it should have it in the right spot on both sides. Now we're ready to install our shackle link. Here, you're going to see those grease zerks I was referring to earlier, and the two holes where the grease is going to come out and lubricate these pivot points. To get them installed, we're going to start with a little bit of all-purpose grease. Here we're using bearing grease to be able to get our shackle installed. This is just going to help it slide in a little bit better. We can go ahead and get that in place.Slide it into place just like that. Now, we'll take our bracket, slide it on the backside of our shackles, and thread on our nuts. Now that we have our equalizer all put together, we can go ahead and remove our outermost bolt on our leaf spring. What we're doing now is we need to jack up the axle, remove our jack stand so we can lower it, the leaf spring, enough to be able to get that bushing out. Now, we'll take our punch again and knock out that plastic bushing. Now, we'll take our new bolt and insert it on the outside. And we'll place our nut on the backside. And we'll do this same process for the rearmost part of our leaf spring assembly. Now, we're going to take a 21-millimeter wrench on the outside, and a 18-millimeter socket on the inside, to tighten everything down. After you have everything tightened down, you want to go back through and torque everything down to the specifications in your directions. Once you everything torqued down to specifications, you want to grease all the zerks before you put your wheels back on. It's just going to be a lot easier, rather than trying to grease it while your wheels are on.When you see it starting oozing out the side, that's more than enough to fill up that gap. Now that we've got everything fully assembled, we can go ahead and repeat the same process for the other side. You may have noticed that our shackles, one of them is facing up in the correct direction and one of them is facing down. You may have to jack up the front axle just to get this realigned and facing in the upward position. To correct our shackle orientation, we raised up our front axle and that lowered down our shackle; now we just crank up on the rear axle, and you'll see that those shackles are going to be in the correct orientation now. With all that being said, guys, that's going to do it for our look and installation of the Dexter Easy Flex system.

Just installed, no road test yet. Product appears well made and heavy duty, Dexters packaging could have been better, some of the plating was worn or scratched off of the equilizers, cosmetic only. Shipping was prompt and complete. 156609

Haven't installed yet but looks like a quality part wish they would send the heavy duty shackles for the other ends of the springs. Everything is now heavy duty except for the ends if the springs that attach to the trailer frame rails. 235522

Installed on my wife's 2-horse gooseneck trailer with living quarters, along with flip kit for axle to raise trailer for leveling with higher truck. My wife believes the ride was much smoother for the horses based on less anxiety in horse's demeanor when unloading after trip. 315247

Great product. As an industrial designer (retired), ...kept the machine shop, I dread the quality of pretty much everything I order. Sure, one bronze bushing needed to be pressed in further and a nut was missing due to UPS's classic handling, but the end product can only be described as 'OVERKILL'. Thanks for saving one very poorly designed Lamar dump load trailer ...requiring an axle flip to have any suspension travel at all. 561493

etrailer is probably the best one stop trailer solution on the web. I just fabricated my own deck over dovetail tailed from scratch. I ordered just about everything I needed for the build. The sales staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend etrialer to anyone weather your rebuilding your trailer or fabricating a new trailer, they pretty much have everything your looking for with very good pricing and they stand behind every product they sell. 359320

This is probably one of the best products you can buy when fixing up a trailer where everything is egged out and wasted. Bear in mind that all spring hangers need to have the same dimesnsion from the bottom of the frame to the center of the holes. I didn't know this until the instructions revealed that. If your center hanger is tall, and end hangers are short, your springs will sit at an angle. So, provided all your hangers are the same, it's a quick swap. If they don't match, there will be welding required as well as a bunch of measuring and fabrication. 315219

The staff was very prompt and courteous. I received the product within three working days and am very satisfied with the etrailer service and the product. High quality and has made a world of difference with the quality I feel while towing my FZ322 toy hauler loaded or empty. Much heavier system that rides smoother and more quiet than the manufacturers suspension. 454958

Perfectly much improved ride. With the grease fittings and heavy duty construction and regular maintenance approximately every 5,000 miles there isn’t any evidence of wear in the shackles or pins. Well worth the money spent.

This is an excellent upgrade for any trailer suspension. The bushings in mine were worn out so it was time for a rebuild. All the parts are first class and everything fit together perfect. Don't get in a rush and allow yourself plenty of time. The improvement in the ride was noticeable right away on our first trip of 400 miles...and it was a joy. This rebuild was done on a 1997 Alpenlite 34' fifth wheel 538869

Great service, questions answered promptly and accurately, package arrived before the promised time. I had no problems installing the product as the fitment was exact thanks to etrailer product recommendation. Installation of this item should be done by an accomplished mechanic and in a well equipped shop. My 5th wheel is 32' long and the installation requires at least 3 jacks to lift the trailer and axles and to manuver the axle height in order to install the pivot bolts. Product smoothed out ride to some degree but the reason for my installation was due to worn out bushings which made a click/pop noise while driving over uneven surfaces. 234675

We have a Sandpiper mid bunk 5er we bought 2 years ago as we upgraded from a travel trailer. As the driver I could immediately tell the improved handling pulling a 5th Wheel over the travel trailer. However, that was the extent of joy going to the fifth wheel. For two years we suffered with a bumpy ride as we towed our camper around the southeast. We began our journey to improve the ride with the Lippert flex air pin box which made a difference, but we were not satisfied. Next we moved from a standard equalizer system to the Dexter Ez Flex and the wet bolts. I will say we also upgraded our tires to the Goodyear endurance’s tires at the same time. Our first trip was 400 miles through some inner city interstates and some smooth interstates. The combination of all three components working together ( the pin box, tires, and dexter Ez flex system) made the ride enjoyable once more. My wife said that it felt like it used to when we towed our travel trailers. Now I will say it took money to get the ride we wanted, but it was worth it for the amount we use and paid for our RV. Please note that you will lose a little ride height moving from a standard equalizer to the dexter. In my case I lost somewhere around an inch based on my best guess, but I did not measure before and after. Overall I’m thrilled with the improvement we noticed. 572609

I purchased this to replace the worn EZ Flex suspension on our 2011 Heartland Bighorn. The original EZ Flex was not a wet bolt, so I figured this was a good upgrade. I have read that Dexter had a bad batch of equalizer rubber and ours was definitely evident of that. The bumper material had completely collapsed and cracked such that the equalizers were hitting metal-to-metal. The nylon bushings and bolts were in good shape but the bronze bushings in the equalizers were worn through on the inner edges. We have towed our 5th wheel about 20,000 miles, coast-to-coast. I was surprised at the wear seen. Installation went well with one broken bronze spring bushing requiring a reorder. The rest of the installation worked well. I used two bottle jacks (20 ton for frame, 6 ton for one axle) and a floor jack for the second axle. A C-Clamp came in handy to center the spring on the bracket for bolt installation. 3-4 pumps of grease for each of the fittings. We'll see if it helps in a couple of weeks on Michigan spring roads. 491247

This is for people that USE a trailer. If you replace shackle links and equalizers once a year, this is for you. Mine showed up with some spring eye bushings missing, so the packing could be improved. Surprisingly, they wouldn't send me replacements or sell them separately. I ordered them from another vendor and installed the kit. Grease it every now and again and no wear to the pins or shackles so far. Well worth the money if your trailer is on the road every day. 496077

Still as good as new. I would say it would be nice if the trailer didnt have [] axles because the equalizer is very close to the ground, but I have only dragged it hard once and it didnt hurt it that I can tell. Highly recommended if you daily your trailer.

The Dexter EZ Flex equalizer system with heavy duty shackles, combined with Sumo Springs, made a huge difference in the amount of trailer bounce I experienced in towing a 34' travel trailer. The entire rig is much more stable and under control. Towing went from scary to mildly pleasant. I was very pleased with the customer service I recieved and would recommend them to anyone. 736954

After installing my new E-Z Flex Suspension kit a year ago I have travelled close to 25k with out any problems and it held up even after breaking a leaf spring and then later the leaf spring bracket that is welded to the frame. I am super impressed with this product and wonder why Heartland does not use it when they build there trailers. 714107

  • Replacement Equalizer Needed for Dexter Axle Equalizer 13-142
If you are simply needing to replace some worn equalizers then we actually do carry the part you are searching for. It is listed as part # K13-142-02 on our site and is a direct replacement for the 13-142 equalizer that you referenced. I confirmed this with my contact at Dexter Axle. If you are looking to upgrade your current equalizers then no, there is no equalizer upgrade we currently carry that will directly fit the large dimensions that you referenced. The length is good on the EZ Flex system # K71-653-00 but the height may be different depending on where you are measuring that 4-3/4 inches. On the EZ Flex the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center line between the 2 bottom holes, straight up and down, is 2-7/8 inches. If your 4-3/4 inch measurement is diagonal then you will be good to go with this kit. For a u-bolt kit you can use # APUBR-9. The shocks might actually feel more effective with the EZ Flex kit...

Your current clearance measurement is concerning. You should have about 4.5 inches from the top of your tire to the floor in order for you to have adequate clearance from bumps when traveling. Either the Lippert Equa-Flex ,part # LC279688, or the Dexter E-Z Flex, part # K71-653-00, will work for your trailer, even though they are rated for heavier weights. All such items are shown on the linked page. Dexter kit # K71-653-00 replaces a standard equalizer 13-122 on trailers with a 35-inch center-to-center axle spacing. This includes the rubber...

  • Dexter EZ Flex Equalizer Recommendation for a 2005 Forest River Sierra
Based on the dimensions you listed the part # K71-653-00 that you referenced would be the correct equalizer to replace what you have. If you have a second set of holes on your hangers you could use them to alter the ride height of your trailer.

  • Dimensions for Equalizer in the Dexter E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System # K71-653-00
I have an attached photo which illustrates the dimensions of the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System, part # K71-653-00 you inquired about. As you can see on the photo, the distance from the outer mounting hole on the arm of the equalizer to the top mounting hole in the center is 4-3/4 inches. The dimension between the centerline of the bottom mounting holes and the centerline of the top mounting hole is approximately 2-7/8 inches. And as you are aware, the distance between the...

  • Availability of Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension System For Trailer with 34 Inch Axle Spacing
All of the equalizer suspension enhancements I have for double-eye springs are designed to fit either 33 inch spacing ( # K71-652-00) or 35 inch spacing ( # K71-653-00) between axles. I do not offer any that are listed for a 34 inch axle center spacing. You might want to measure the distance from the center from one bolt hole to the center of the other bolt hole on your existing equalizer. If you get between 5-1/4 and 6-1/4 inches you could use the Dexter E-Z Flex Suspension System,...

  • Will Replacing Trailer Equalizers Increase the Spacing Between Axles on a Tandem Axle Trailer
You cannot increase the space between the tires just by changing the equalizer. The axles will still be in the same place. You would have to move the axles which is going to require changing all suspension components including the hangers, springs, equalizers shackle straps, and possibly the u-bolt kit if it doesn't fit the new springs. This is a major change that would require a shop that works on trailers or an RV dealer with a service center. At the very least some hangers would have...

  • Recommended Replacement E-Z Flex Equalizers For Tandem Trailer
When looking for a replacement equalizer for your tandem trailer you will want to find an equalizer with dimensions similar to the equalizers you are replacing. I recommend part # K71-653-00. These equalizers measure 7-3/4 inches center to center. Although this system says it is for 8,000 lb axles, you should have no problems due to the rubber core that helps make towing smoother by absorbing road shock. The shackles that are included are 2-1/4 inches long so you may want to change...

  • Will Dexter E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System Fit a 35 Inch Axle Spacing
The equalizers in the E-Z Flex system # K71-653-00 are designed to fit in place of equalizers that measure 7-1/4 inches to 8-1/4 inches so they will still fit but might not provide as good of a ride as they possibly could if the axle spacing is in the butter zone (33 inches on center). But it will still be an improvement.

  • Will a E-Z Flex Rubber Suspension System Replace the 7-3/4 inch Equalizer on a Tandem Axle Trailer
If your equalizers measure 7-3/4 inches on center from bolt hole to bolt hole, then you axles will remain at 34 inches apart with the installation of the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System, item # K71-653-00. The front and rear hanger spacing as well as the spring length will determine axle spacing as well as the length of the equalizer. Replacing the equalizer with an equalizer of the same dimension as the original should not alter the axle spacing. As long as you have clearance...

  • Should There Be Play Between the Leaf Spring Eye Bushing and Shackle Bolt on a Trailer
If there is a tiny bit of play in suspension components that are designed to move you would be fine. 1/16 of an inch isn't very much, and as long as you torqued everything down to spec you would be good to go. Ideally we just don't want it torqued down so much that the suspension can't move. The bolts should be snug, but not so snug that the suspension binds up. If your shackle bolt were tight enough to prevent movement in the setup they eventually would wear themselves down to the...

  • Replacement Bolts Needed for the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System # K71-653-0
The closest suspension bolts that we have with a grease zerk fitting that are near the 4-1/4 inch length that you are looking for are 4-1/2 inches long. The Redline # 7-135-2 has a 3/4 inch diameter while the Redline part # 7-260-2 has a 7/8 inch diameter. If you are needing direct replacement bolts and shackles for the parts that came with the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System # K71-653-00, then the 3-3/4" overall length Replacement Shackle Link with Bolts # 018-026-05...

  • Will Dexter E-Z Flex Fit 2013 Keystone Raptor Fifth Wheel Trailer?
The E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System # K71-653-00 may fit your 2013 Keystone Raptor so long as it meets a few criteria. This system will work on your tandem axle Raptor if it has 35" axle spacing, has 7-3/4" equalizers and the axles are rated up to 8,000 lbs. It is a replacement for standard 13-122 Dexter equalizers. There is another E-Z Flex System if your Keystone Raptor does not meet the above criteria. The # K71-652-00 fits tandem axles with 33" spacing, has 5-5/8" equalizers...

  • Which Smooths Out Trailer Suspension More EZ Flex Equalizers or Shock Kit for Suspension
The EZ Flex system like the part # K71-653-00 will smooth the ride out, but a shock setup will give you the best results since it dampens the movement of the suspension. If you have a 2-3/8 inch axle you need the shock kit part # LC281255 or if you have a 3 inch axle you need part # LC281281.
