Best Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System For Trailer with 795 Lb Dry Tongue Weight

Updated 07/14/2020 | Published 10/04/2019

Question:

Hi, quick question about Hitches. If the Dry hitch weight of the trailer is 795 lbs, would a Weight Distribution hitch rated for 1000 lbs tongue weight be sufficient. Thinking of Fastway E2, or equivalent, thanks.

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System is an excellent choice so if this is a system you are interested in I would not hesitant as it has exceptional sway control and it comes with a ten year warranty so you know it will last. That said, if you have a dry tongue weight of 795 lbs, I recommend the part # FA92-00-1200 which is rated for up to 12,000 lbs gross trailer weight or 1,200 lbs tongue weight. The part # FA92-00-1000 or part # FA94-00-1000 which is rated for up to 10,000 lbs gross trailer weight or 1,000 tongue weight would work but I recommend a bit more wiggle room as does Fastway. The upside is that you may not need to get a new system if you decide to upgrade your trailer down the line.

The 2-5/16" Hitch Ball for Equal-i-zer/Fastway Weight Distribution Systems part # EQ91-00-6100 will also be needed but that is all.

We have a 2019 VW Atlas. We also have a 2001 Toyota LandCruiser. We are considering a 25' Airstream. We may have to pull with the Atlas sometimes. The VW Atlas is rated for 5000lbs towing and 500 tongue weight. The Airstream dry is 5503 lbs with 837 tongue weight. Would a product like this Fast way E2 lighten the tongue weight or redistribute it enough that we could safely pull with the Atlas on short distances? We realize we are 503lbs over the tow rating but more concerned about the tongue weight.

I definitely wouldn't tow this size trailer with your Atlas. It's well over the vehicle's capacity, even when transferring some of that weight with a weight distribution system. Keep in mind too that the specs you listed are the trailer's dry weight - once it's actually loaded up it will be significantly heavier.

@ChrisR Thanks Chris. I agree. I also did not realize the Atlas also does not recommend a WD system. So we will be towing the Airstream with our 2016 Tacoma and 2001 Landcruiser. The Tacoma has the factory tow kit, so it can tow up to 6800lbs and I have installed an after market 3" lift with heavier leaf Springs, so I am sure the tongue weight rating is much higher than stock suspension. New Question: Would you recommend a WD system for the Tacoma and Landcruiser? Both are ladder frame vehicles. Thanks for all the help!

@ChristopherD I think a WD system would provide benefit to your setup - whether towing with the Tacoma or Landcruiser. Do you know how much the Airstream will weigh when loaded or do you happen to know its GVWR?
