Advantage of Blue Ox Weight Distribution Shank with Longer Shank

Updated 06/11/2019 | Published 06/10/2019

Question:

I presently have a Blue Ox BXW 1500 and it is serving very well. I changed trailers from a lighter Forest River to a Jayco 330RSTS that sits considerably higher. This hitch has been changed several times and was set beautifully for the V-Nose when Jayco staff person thought he raised it enough for my new rig. You can see it was not correct, but, I got home with it. The shank is now flipped and ball attachment is all the way up but I havent tried the trailer yet to see how it all settles. This will be my initial attempt at the correction. Question is: Would I gain anything using the 12inch shank over the 9inch shank if I order one of the nine hole shanks?

The longer 12 inch shank on the Blu Ox # BXW4003 is just going to push the trailer a few inches further back from the rear of your truck. Adding clearance between the truck and trailer connection can be beneficial to allow space for an accessory you might have mounted in between or to be able to lower the tailgate on the truck with the trailer still connected (if this provides enough space to do on your particular setup).

Other than that there's no advantage in terms of strength or performance with the longer 12 inch # BXW4003 over the 9 inch # BXW4002.
