Can I Upgrade The 5.30 x 12” C Tire To Increase The Speed Rating

Updated 06/13/2018 | Published 06/11/2018

Question:

Im looking at purchasing a trailer with a 5.30 x 12”-C tire. What are the specifics on this tire concerning ply 2 or 4, if this is a radial tire, and what the maximum speed for this tire would be? The manufacturer states that this tire is not to be upgraded unless it is for their 12inch aluminum mag wheel but that would be the rim and not the tire. I drive a 2018 Ford F-150 and would like to travel at 70 mph on the interstate highways. I will be trailering a motorcycle 550 lbs and some miscellaneous cargo totaling 650-700 lbs. The trailer is rated to carry 1800 lbs. The trailer Im looking at is the Floe Cargomax XRT 8-57. I would be doing highway speeds the majority of the day traveling from Ohio to the Western states. Im trying to decide if this would meet my expectations of 70 mph, if there are any possible options for tire upgrade, or if I need to just look for another trailer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since the manufacturer warns about upgrading the tire there is a good chance if you upgrade the tires it may void the warranty on your trailer. I recommend that you talk to the trailer manufacturer about replacing the tires with a higher speed rating of the same tire size and ply.

The closest tire that we have to those on your Floe Cargomax XRT 8-57 are the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire Load Range C # TT53012C. The ply rating is 6 and the maximum speed is 81 MPH WITH A 1,050-lb max load at 80 psi.
