Question:
good day , I am shopping for a vehicle to tow my pop up camper and possibly a 3000# RV next summer. I am looking at a 2005 Volvo xc 90 2.5T AWD. Is the tow rating adequate for my needs?Which hitch would you recommend? Is this a unit I could install myself? thanks

Based on my research, it looks like the 2005 Volvo XC90 has a towing capacity of 4,000 to 5,000 pounds, depending on the exact model. With this in mind, I still strongly suggest taking a look at the owner's manual for the vehicle or verifying this information with your local dealer before purchasing it to tow your pop-up camper or 3,000 pound trailer.
For a trailer hitch that is confirmed to fit the 2005 Volvo XC90, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III # 75152. This Class III hitch features a custom-fit design that will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. Other than the exhaust needing to be temporarily lowered, this is a pretty straight-forward installation that has an estimated install time of just around 40 minutes.
I have attached an installation video on this exact vehicle, along with the written instructions. You can use this information to see if it is something you feel comfortable doing. Otherwise, any local mechanic or shop should be able to handle the installation without issue.
Since you will be towing, you will also need to add a trailer wiring harness. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118411. This custom harness will install on the Volvo by simply plugging into built-in ports located behind the trim panels in the cargo area on the driver and passenger side. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights. I have again attached an installation video on the 2005 Volvo XC90 that you can use for reference.
Lastly, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
