Maximum Towing Capacity of a 2005 Honda CR-V

Question:

I was looking at your Curt trailer hitch Item # 13535 for a 2005 Honda C-RV. The info Ive seen for the C-RV says towing weight is 1500lbs. but this hitch is rated at 3500lbs. Obviously 3500 would be preferable but I dont want to be unsafe. Which number is correct, or are they unrelated?

A trailer hitch receiver such as the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13535 which is a confirmed fit for your 2005 Honda CR-V is almost always going to be rated higher than the vehicle's towing capacity. You will need to abide by the lower of the two ratings as this will be your limiting factor. I have attached an install video of this hitch on a similar 2004 Honda CR-V for you.

To determine the maximum trailer weight you can tow with your CR-V, you will need to find both the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These figures can be located on the information tag inside the drivers door jamb. If you subtract the GVW from the GCWR, that will give you the maximum Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) you can safely tow.

If the GTW of your trailer is over 50% of your gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), the use of a weight distribution system is recommended. In order to be sure you are choosing the correct weight distribution system, you will want to find the total tongue weight of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight of both your loaded and ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

The average total tongue weight (TW) rating of a trailer is typically 10-15% of the GTW. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will want your total tongue weight to fall in the middle of the weight distribution weight capacity. For example, the ideal weight distribution system for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs. is one that is rated for 400-800 lbs. of tongue weight.
