Question:
I am looking to purchase a trailer hitch for my 2006 Chevy Uplander. I am not sure of the wheel base and do not have the vehicle or owners manual with me, but is is front wheel drive only. It would be needed for only lightweight towing such as small U-haul or single axle utility trailer maybe 8 to 12 feet. Would I need an Class 2 or 3 hitch set up?

Whenever available I always recommend a Class III 2 inch hitch for vehicles as they have higher towing capacities and since more accessories are made for 2 inch hitches they offer greater flexibility as well. For that you would want the Draw Tite hitch part # 75278. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.
Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
For trailer wiring you then would want the part # 118396 which is a custom fit wiring harness designed specifically for your vehicle.
The towing capacity of the vehicle is 2,000 pounds unless the van is equipped with either the V92 trailering package or the heavy duty cooling package. If it has either of those then it is rated for 3,500 pounds.
