Installing Curt Class III Trailer Hitch on 2013 Kia Sorento SX with Factory Tow Prep Package

Updated 03/14/2016 | Published 03/11/2016

Question:

I have a 2013 KIA Sorento SX V6 with tow prep. I like the Curt hitch as it has 3 points of contact instead of the others only having 2. Is it absolutely necessary to trim the heat shield? I t looks like it has the holes punch in it to allow the upper bolt to be inserted.

The Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # C13073 that you reference will require the heat shield to be trimmed. As you noted, there may be holes in the heat shield to access the existing holes in the frame, but the heat shield needs to be trimmed so that the trailer hitch can sit directly against the vehicle frame rail. Curt directs to trim the heat shield in step 2 of the hitch installation instructions, and I cannot recommend that you deviate from these installation instructions. I have attached these instructions for you.

Curt also requires the use of a stabilization strap # 18050 with all non-trailer loads, such as bike racks and cargo carriers, with the # C13073 trailer hitch.

If it were my car, I like the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75684 best. This hitch does not require any trimming of the heat shield or rear bumper fascia for installation. Also, Draw-Tite does not require the use of any additional stabilization straps. This trailer hitch is tested and rated for the same towing and tongue weight capacity as the Curt hitch. I have also attached the installation instructions and an installation video of the # 75684 hitch for you.

If you are looking to tow a trailer with your 2013 Kia Sorento, you may also be interested in the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56332 and etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2 Inch Hitches # 989900. I have attached some help articles on installing a trailer hitch and towing for you.
