Question:
I am having some serious trouble finding the right device to wire up my VW tail lights for towing a small trailer. The wiring on the lights is as follows: - Brake/ Tail lightOn the same wire -Turn Signal -Ground How do I wire up trailer lights with this configuration? Do you have a part that would work for this?

Expert Reply:
I recommend using a heavy-duty vehicle wiring harness # 119250KIT because it includes circuit protection to safeguard itself from electrical shorts. Vehicles using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) will give your trailer lights full brightness during activation.
This hasn't been tested on the GTI models yet, but my contact at Tow-Ready confirmed that it will work with the 2015 Golf and would work with the GTI just fine even though it isn't published as a fit in our fit guide. We haven't installed this on a 2015 GTI yet, but you will want to test the wires for proper functions before splicing in the harness using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. I have attached the instructions that explain how to determine which wiring system you have and how to proceed for proper installation. It's a universal wiring harness and that's why vehicle specific instructions are not available.
I have included an informative article about trailer wiring and wiring installation instructions for you. The instructions will be the same on your 2015 even though it shows up to 2010.
