Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tire and rim came quick and so far (1 year) no problems. Very satisfied with this product

by:

I appreciated the email communications on the order status. It appears that supply chain woes are what you are dealing with. You are not alone

by:

Perfect, Thank you!!

by:

I bought six for my pontoon boat, two spares, beautiful look, excellent job, even better price. fast delivery, thank you.

by:

Great tire and rim package. The tire has a higher rating than most other brands of the same size. This combo costs the same as a single tire at my nearest RV shop. Buy it here and SAVE! $$$$

by:

Cheapest wheel/tire combo I could find online. Shipping was a bit pricey, but for a 19 lb. package, its understandable. Tire and wheel appear to be of good quality and it mounted right to my trailer frame with a length of threaded rod, bent to shape, and some washers and nuts with no problems. Would definitely reccomend

by:

The wheels have proven to be a very good product. No problems. I would highly recommend them to others.

by:

The finish on the wheel was very poor. Pitted and very inconsistent. Looked like someone spray painted a corroded wheel. In the process of returning for a refund.

by:

The items shipped promptly, arrived in mint condition and met all expectations. I am refurbishing an older aluminum trailer and found everything I need for the job quickly and easily at etrailer's Web site.

by:

Tires have been excellent. Delivered super fast, super customer servce, made me a very happy customer

by:

This is a load range D tire for a snowmobile trailer. Load range D in this size is hard to find, but really necessary. The tire performs well.

by:

Fair pricing excellent service and a follow up after having made the sale says they really care about their service

by:

Exellent selection, easy process...highly recommend and will purchase from again in the future!!

by:

Very guick delivery.

by:

by:

I bought this as a spare for my boat trailer.
The
galvanized wheel looks better than the factory galvanized wheels on the trailer. The price was right also.

by:

This has been used as a spare tire but has held air and still looks good and not rusty. The price and quality of the tire has served well.

by:

Nice finish on the wheels. Pulled to Florida and back with no issues. Hope to use it more this summer.

by:

Great trailer tire and wheel combo at the lowest possible prices with shipping. Am very pleased with this product and company

by:

Tires are exactly as specified.Rims are a little "rough".The rims have discoloration on them and what looks like spots where the welding was done
poorly.

by:

Great tire - actually ordered the wrong size and Tim really helped me get it straight and order the correct size.

by:

Excellent tires! Perfect fit - roll nicely down the road and the prices was great. Plus, their website is upfront and honest (amazon does not list a.) tire brand b.) warranty. They are the real deal.

by:

GREAT service!!!!

by:

I have had these tires for one year and have had no problems. Tires seem well balanced and perform as expected. Good tire.

by:

Awesome Service and Very Timely delivery. Would definitely do business here again.
Great packaging and product.

  • What 4.80-12 Tire on Galvanized Wheel do You have for My Boat Trailer Used on Sometimes Saltwater?
Hello Todd, We definitely have something for you, but we do not a radial tire and wheel combo, as we only have that tire and wheel combo in a bias. It depends on your bolt pattern, and the weight of your boat to decide what the best option for you. You will want one of the following: - If you have a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and your boat does not weigh more than 2,500 pounds (assuming you need 2 wheels) # AM30670 - If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and your boat does not weigh more...

  • Recommendation for Upgrading to Larger Tires from 5.30-12 Tires on Trailer
As long as you have the needed wheel well and trailer frame clearance, there is no reason that you couldn't go to a larger tire size from your existing 5.30-12 tires. The next size up from what you have is going to be with an ST175/80-13 size tire. This tire size will have an overall diameter of 24 inches and a width of 6.9 inches. This is compared to the 21.9 inch diameter and 5.6 inch width of your existing 5.30-12 tires, which means that the top of the tire will be about 1 inch closer...

  • Which Trailer Tire Size is best for a Jet Ski Trailer that has 4.80-12 Tires
Increasing tire width will not really benefit you in any significant way. You would see a slight increase in stability, but if the trailer already rides pretty straight, you may not see any improvement. The 5.30-12 tires would also make the trailer sit a bit higher. My suggestion would be to use part # AM30630. It is a galvanized wheel for 4 on 4 pattern. It is a load range C bias ply tire and each wheel would be capable of supporting 990 pounds at 90 psi, which should be more than enough...

  • Recommended Wheel and Tire To Replace 4.50-10 Tires On Concrete Mixer
We have an option that will work perfectly for you. I recommend replacing the 4.50-10 tires on wheels that have the 4 on 4" bolt pattern with the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30630. This combination has wheels with the same 4 on 4" bolt pattern, and the tires will be .1" wider and will be right at 1.5" taller overall so you will have no issues based on the clearance you can see in the pictures you provided. • Replacement 4.80-12 Trailer Wheel and Tire for Jet Ski Trailer
Hey Timothy, if the leaf springs have bolt holes on both ends that would mean you have double-eye springs actually. Unless the bolts are on the hangers of the trailer frame? If you can get back to me with that for sure we can determine what you need. Also do you know the axle capacity? I am sure it's lower since it's jet-ski trailer but that's other piece of info we need. As far as U-bolts go I would need to know the diameter of your axles to be sure we get right size. The typical size...

  • Recommended 13" Wheel Tire Combo w/ a 5 on 4-1/2 Lug Pattern
Hey Nick! To go up to a 13" wheel tire combo, I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire item # AM31990. I checked on Carry-On's website and it looks like all their wheels have 5 on 4-1/2 lug patterns which is what this one has. The Kenda item # AM31990 is a load range D tire with a 1,650 lbs at 70 psi. It has a speed rating of M which tops out at 81 mph. What's going to be pretty important is the overall diameter of this tire. It measures 24.1". You'll want to compare...

The Kenda Trailer Tire with Galvanized Wheel # AM30630 is a bias tire which has cords inside which run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel for a stiffer sidewall than a radial tire. This tire has the standard speed rating of 65 mph. I've added a link to a video review of this wheel/tire combo for you to take a look at.

  • Difference Between Tire Sizes 4.80-12 and 5.30-12
The two tire sizes you referenced, 4.80-12 and 5.30-12, both fit 4-inch wide rims, but they differ in their overall diameter. A 4.80-12 tire/wheel when fully inflated will have a diameter of 20-1/2-inches while the 5.30-12 size will be just under 22-inches in overall diameter. The linked articles on trailer tires will give you additional information on sizes and tire types.

A 175/80-13 trailer tire and wheel will measure 24 inches in diameter and have a width of 6.6 inches so you do need to measure to ensure you have the necessary clearance. Hi Thomas, Yes, we have the 4,80-12 tire size and wheel you need for your boat trailer. No worries though as we have options for 5 on 4-1/2" and 4 on 4", and if you aren't sure, I have added links below to a printable bolt hole template as well as a help article on how to measure your wheel bolt pattern for you. • What is Pilot Diameter of Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30630
Hey David, so 2-13/16 inches is right at 2.81 inches. Since trailer wheels center on the lug nuts all you need is a wheel that has a larger pilot diameter than the bore of the trailer hub. So if you have basically a 2.81 inch diameter bore currently a wheel and tire like the part # AM30630 would be big enough to fit as it has a pilot diameter of 2.84 inch. Your trailer wheels are attached to the hub with lug nuts correct and not bolts?

  • Switching to Larger Tires on Boat Trailer With 4.80/4.00-8 Tires
Hi Jim; a tire like the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30630 you were looking at is only 0.2" wider than your typical 4.80/4.00-8 tire so that should still be enough inside clearance. The recommended clearance on top is 3" so at 1.4" you aren't going to have enough for that suspension travel. I recommend either sticking with the original tire size or you can remove the fenders and either leave them off or add new ones to make sure you have enough clearance on top. What is your end...

For the 5.30-12 they are 21.9 inches in overall diameter and have capacities of 840. 1,045, and 1,250 lbs. Larger tires tend to run a bit cooler and have higher capacities.
