Recommended 13" Wheel Tire Combo w/ a 5 on 4-1/2 Lug Pattern

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/17/2024

Question:

I have a Carrie On trailer with 4.80 12 5 lugs; I would like a heavier load capacity. The only way I see it is to increase to a 13-inch rim with a higher Load Rating D. What could you recommend for the Wheel/Tire package?

Hey Nick! To go up to a 13" wheel tire combo, I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire item # AM31990. I checked on Carry-On's website and it looks like all their wheels have 5 on 4-1/2 lug patterns which is what this one has.

The Kenda item # AM31990 is a load range D tire with a 1,650 lbs at 70 psi. It has a speed rating of M which tops out at 81 mph. What's going to be pretty important is the overall diameter of this tire. It measures 24.1". You'll want to compare this to your current set up to make sure you have enough clearance between the tires and any fenders you may have. We recommend 2" - 3" of clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom of your fender so the suspension can flex without rubbing.

Hey Nick, how did the Kenda Karrier 13-inch wheel and tire combo work out on your Carry-On trailer? Did the extra clearance and higher load rating give you the upgrade you were looking for? Your update could make it easier for others looking to move up in tire size.

@JerredH New tires were taller than the clearance under the Fenders, and broader than the original ones. I had to cut off the Old fenders and install different ones. Was it worth it - Yes
