Video Transcript for Fifth Wheel Hitch Kit Installation - 2000 Ford F-350 Pickup

Today on this 2000 Ford F-350 pickup we are going to install part number RP50082-58 from Reese. Also our 22K Reese fifth wheel hitch part number 30033. The first step involves removing the spare tire and take it down temporarily so you have some access to work underneath the vehicle to tighten up the nuts and bolts. The second thing we want to do is go to the driver side of the vehicle and disconnect the the hanger that holds the parking brake cable. That will get reattached to the frame bracket when we install that. This is the back side of the nut that we just took off of the bolt so we will just pull that out of our way. What is going to happen is this is going to get sandwiched between the bracket and the actual frame of the vehicle when we reinstall it. The next thing we are going to do is go to the bed of the truck and we will put the first rail in and mark its location. As you can see here we have got the first rail in the bed of the pickup and what you need to do is measure from the edge that we see facing us towards the edge of the bed itself. Then we want to make sure we have the rail even left to right. 01:06

When we measure it left to right to center it there is a crease in the bed itself that makes a good place to start off from. At this point we are going to mark the locations where we are going to drill our holes out in the bed of the pickup. We are going to use this hole and this hole the two holes on the very outside of the rail in the frame rail and those are going to connect to our frame brackets underneath the bed of the pickup so we are going to find the center and then mark it. Just a quick trip back underneath the bed we are going to install a piece of wood next to this cross member close to the gas tank which is straight below so this will give us extra insurance that we do not damage anything else. We will just put that wood in there and then drill it out. We will start off with 1/ 4 inch bit and then after we have the holes marked and drilled we will enlarge those to 9/ 16. 01:59

We are going to use this square hole on the frame bracket. It is going to go straight into the frame like so and then behind that it is going to get this flat block, lock washer, and a nut. It is going to go through the square hole in the frame. We will install it into place and then we will go to the back side and install our hardware. We are just going to leave that finger tight and install the U bolt going towards the front of the vehicle. Next we are going to install our U bolt. It is going to wrap around the frame. Mostly with this bottom tab on the frame bracket and of course we will match this course with the same one on top and we will install our conical tooth washer and the nut. Now we are back over on the driver side. We are going to take that bolt that we removed earlier and put it right there and we are going to take our nut and just thread it on there. We are going to install the frame bracket just like we did on the passenger side and then we will reinstall our brake cable back on to this bolt. We are going to take the nut off and put this wire form over it on the hanger for the brake cable. Put the nut back on it and when you tighten it all down make sure this part of the form goes in this hole here. For now we will just leave that loose and that will be one of the last things we do. We are going to put our rail back in position, we are going to in our bolts and in some cases it hits the corrugation where the bolts goes through down in to the valley then we would need that spacer to go in there. Since it is right on the corner where it goes down we are going to use the spacer between the frame bracket and take up the space underneath the corrugation. 03:55

Try to slip that into place and make sure you do not crush the corrugation when you tighten the bolts down. We will put our hardware into place. The flat block first, then a lock washer, and then a nut. Repeat the same process back on the driver side. We have got our front rail mounted in loosely. Now take the bottom half of the fifth wheel hitch and use it to place the second rail. Make sure it is square and just like the front rail we will mark our holes, drill them out, and install the hardware. Next make sure the rails are square with each other. We are going to start off measuring from here to this edge in the bed itself. Get it equal on both sides and check diagonally to make sure we are square. Just like the front rail we are going to find the center of the holes, mark them out, and punch them and drill them. Take the fifth wheel back out, move the rail out of the way. Same as last time we are going to take our blocks and put them between the bed and this piece of the hat channel that way it does not get crushed when you tighten the bolts. Take the rail and put it back into place and put the bolts back in. Now set the base of the fifth wheel back in to place. Once you put it in here shake it around a little bit and make sure you can take it in and out easily. Then we can start installing the rest of the hardware on the two bolts and then we will snug them down hand tight and then we will check them again and tighten down all of the bolts. We have got them half way tightened. Give it a quick check. We are still good. Now that we have got them hand tight we can torque them as specified in the instructions. 05:58

Now we will start work on the U bolts themselves. Snug them by hand just like you did the other bolts. When they are tightened down evenly we will torque them to specs. One of the last things we have to do is tighten the bolt back in to that. Take the base of the fifth wheel back out. We have got two more bolts to install. We are going to install here and here yellow arrows. Just drill them out with 1/ 2 inch bit and the bolt in and tighten them up on the bottom and we will be almost finished. To make access for the hardware when we used the 1-1/ 4 hole saw and just went right through the heat shield just below it. First put in the conical tooth washer and nut. We have got our base rails installed on the vehicle now work on the hitch itself. In this case we are going to be using part number 30033 22K fifth wheel hitch from Reese. We will start off with the base and then we will install our hitch pins first. Next we will install these two brackets. These use a type of bolt that looks just like a wheel stud and it is going to into place for starters. Then when you tighten them down they will sink in. Those are going to get the lock washer and a nut. Do the same thing on both sides then we will torque those down as specified in the instructions. Next we will install our pivot beams. It is going to fit in the center and use two hitch pins and clips to install. Next we will install the head assembly itself and do the same thing. Same thing again, pin and clip. One more on the other side. Next install the handle. A hole here and here and you have to line them up. Install the cotter pin. Bend it down. Our handle is installed. Install the cover for the handle. With that, that finishes our install of part number RP50082-58 that is the rails and the quick install kit and also our 22K Reese fifth wheel hitch part number 30033.

The product is exactly what I was looking for. Easy to install. The brackets I think are the best part, no drilling required. With this product you can get the satisfaction that your trailers are not going to go anywhere. The etrailer staff made the ordering process very quick and painless. Very helpful and knowledgeable about the products that they sell. I will definitely recommend and order again.

Thanks for the fast shipment, the rails are installed in my F350, and the rails fit the Air Safe Air Box perfectly. I'm looking forward to pulling my 5th wheel in a few days with a smooth ride. Thank you Caleb for the great and fast service you provided from Etrailer.

Product is good quality as it appeared --5th wheel itself was not delivered with rest of kit--arrived three days later. Installation easy.
Installation kit fits perfect-easy installation. Only variable was I had pre-existing air springs , so I had to mark and drill the frame brackets and install the air springs on the outside of the brackets--no big deal--worked out fine

by:

Worked as expected. Installation clearly explained.

I purchased the fifth wheel with the mounting kit to fit my truck. Excellent product. Easy to assemble. Arrived quickly. I completed installation in under 4 hours Thursday night, and used it Friday to transport a camper with no trouble or issues. If you are planning on installing the mounting kit yourself, you will need a torque wrench capable of achieving 212 ft-lbs of torque, and some big muscles. I liked that I could track status of shipment in route easily from the link that was emailed to me. Had 2 minor issues neither was a big deal. I gave a score of excellent because the minor issues did not really affect me, but I am noting them because they may affect another purchaser.
1. The cardboard boxes that the unit shipped in were beat up badly from the handling during shipment. There were holes in 2 of the boxes, and the tubing for the handles were sticking out of the boxes. There were 2 missing parts from the mounting kit box. A 5/8 washer and one of the specialty 1/4 inch spacers that secures the brackets to the frame. This could have been a big deal, but I have washers, and I made a spacer in my shop to replace the missing one. I did not contact Etrailer for replacement parts because I needed to install the unit so it could be used the next day. My choice.
2. The instructions from the bracket kit led me to believe that I needed to drill 4 pilot holes in the bed for the rear bracket, when I needed to drill all five. This meant that I had to take the bracket back out to drill the center hole for the fifth bolt. It took me about 10 extra minutes to install the brackets than it should have. I felt the instructions were a little unclear on that step. Other than that the instructions were straight forward, simple and easy to follow.

I would purchase this product again if I needed another wheel, and I would order from Etrailer again.

Given that this rail kit is custom-built for my truck, it fit perfectly and was easy to install. I originally ordered a universal rail kit from someplace else, but as I was preparing to install it, I realized that there was to much margin for error. The instructions were unclear for my truck and I'd have to drill a bunch of holes that might end up being wrong in the end. Additional research led me to etrailer.com where I found the rail kit I should have ordered in the first place. The website had excellent information, the right products, and a great price-match policy. I should have ordered from etrailer in the first place and saved myself a lot of time.

I had a specialty truck shop install this. It cost $300 to install it very solid installation hardware

by:

Impressive how fast the order came, the part I wanted was on back order for 2 months and Stacey helped me get the same thing in another brand, I haven't installed it yet, but I'm sure it'll fit good.

by:

Direct fit is the way to go, no holes to drill and everything lined up perfect. Thanks for your help Caleb!

by:

Good product quality at a fair price. Service for shipping and follow up top notch. I will be going to etrailer.com site first for all my RV and towing needs in the future !
Thanks.

First hitch Reese RP30869 with this bracket.
I
have a F250 diesel with a 6 and 3/4 bed.
We went to a home depot parking lot to put it on, in case we needed any other tools. Very simple to install.
We were able to install this hitch with the custom brackets without even taking the tires off.
Very easy, took about 3 hours, could have been faster you were to remove the tires-hard to tighten to the right foot pounds.
All you need is a few sockets-some deep and some regular, 2" and 6" extension, a torque wrench, drill, drill bits and an extra set of hands if I remember correctly.
For my first hitch, everything was pretty easy.
Etrailer was very helpful with install videos and customer service was excellent.
All pros, no cons, and it looks good too.

We got our hitch rails delivered in a very short amount of time. Due to having a gooseneck under floor ball already installed, we had a mechanic uninstall that and install our new rails. He told us they were very easy to install, but only had one bolt for the front, so he added a couple more bolts and drilled 2 holes. Other than that issue, he advised they were well built and easy to install.
We have our hitch on and the trailer hooked up and ready to go.

I ordered the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches and it was as advertised. Installation was straight forward and easy. I will buy custom rails again. thanks

by:

Ordered this kit to replace my other one when I put a new box on my old truck. It seems to be a lot stronger than the old one. I like the plates that go along the frame rail. My old one just have l brackets. Installation was smooth. No trouble at all. Was simple to bolt on. Think I had to remove my overload spring stopper that was bolted on the frame but that was ok since I am installing airbags also.

by:

System was dead on and easy to install. Everything you need is included and the side plates fit my truck frame exactly.

After one year of using we have had no problems.

Highly recommend this piece and etrailer as well.

I bought this for my 2004 ford f250 diesel to pull my 2014 35' fifth wheel it worked just like it should.I had it installed and the shop was very satisfied with this product.
I had some questions for technical support and they were very helpful.I would rate this product as excellent.

Rail kit fit well in my 2003 Ford F-350, Easy to install. Called and spoke with customer service to make sure I ordered the right kit, very helpful.
All parts came in the two packages, one box was slightly damaged but no missing parts. Will use etrailer again in the future if any replacement parts are needed for the used 5th wheel hitch that I bought

These brackets made my life so much easier as far as the install goes. The print on the instructions was very faded making it hard to see the illustrations. But after reading the text and watching Etrailer.com's informative video for the install on the 2006 f350, it was pretty easy. All total about 2.5 - 3 hours and my brackets and hitch were installed. If I had help im sure it would have been quicker but I did it on my own. The quality of the brackets and hardware was top notch along with super fast shipping and service from Etrailer.com. Thanks!

2001 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

I am fairly mechanical but this bracket and rail system was not the custom fit I thought after reading the reviews. Spent the extra 100.00 to save myself some time not having to drill the frame but holes in the brackets were poorly aligned so fought that first. While trying to bolt the rails down using the supplied carriage bolts found that they were to short to get the spacers, lock washer and nut on. Called etrailer for tech support and spent 10 minutes on hold while the young lady helping me read me the directions I was looking at and then talking to someone ? in tech support who had no idea how to address my problem. Ended up calling Reese tech support directly and their suggestion was to go get longer carriage bolts. Really ? I ended up making it work but had to crank each nut and bolt down without the lock washer then taking each one back off and I had gained enough room to get everything on. It was a PITA and not what I expected with custom fit brackets. This was on a 2001 Ford with 70,000 miles that has had a bedliner its whole life so the bed was not the issue. Not sure why this happened but less than impressed. If the tolerances are this close as far as bolt length you think Reese could spring for bolts another 1/4 to 1/2" longer.

I called e trailer and told them what truck and hitch I have and they sent this in the mail.
Was very easy install took about 3 hours though time would be cut in half if it came with better instructions. The install video helped me out a bunch though so I'm happy they posted that video.
Get yourself quality drill bits my 9/16th was a dewalt titanium bit and after the 6th hole it was shot but I was able to force my way through the last two holes. Very happy with my purchase would definitely recommend and saved myself a ton of money doing it myself :):)
