If you're hauling step-through or small kids' frames, a top tube adapter may be needed, and hanging-arm spacing can make four bikes a tight puzzle.
They use a tool-free tightening knob to secure the rack in the receiver and include locks that secure the bikes and lock the carrier to the hitch. If the knob spins freely and won't tighten, check that the lock isn't in the locked position. Tighten the knob until the connection feels solid, then engage the locks to help deter tampering.
It can feel very sturdy on the back of a 5th wheel with bikes riding stable and secure. We've seen snug fits in both 1.25" and 2" receivers with reduced sway and rattle on highways and bumpy roads. Make sure the rack is fully seated in the receiver and the anti-wobble is tightened. Verify the safety pin is correctly installed to help keep the shank from creeping outward.
It can happen that the knob skips and the wedge won't release. Unlock the knob first, then try loosening while wiggling the rack—light taps with a mallet and lots of wiggling have helped free a stuck wedge. Turn the knob carefully and watch the metal fin below it to avoid scraping your finger. If the issue repeats, inspect the knob for wear before your next trip.
Small frames and step-throughs may need an adapter bar, and even then a 20" kids bike didn't work with an Adapter bar in one case. Handlebar and pedal width can limit how many bikes fit on hanging arms, so plan spacing before loading four. A 36 lbs. e-bike was carried without issue. Check your frame shape and spacing needs to confirm fit.
