To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle. To get the power necessary to operate, the harness must be connected to a 12V power source. To do this, you will need the Curt powered converter wiring kit (55151 - sold separately), which contains the power wire that connects your battery.

Then locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using the provided ring terminal and screw. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of dielectric grease on the 4-pole connector to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Wiring - Trailer Connectors - C56190 Review

Today we're going to review part number C56190. This is the Curt 3 Wire to 2 Wire Converter with the 4-Way Flat Output. Everything shown here on this table is included with this part number. This does provide a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. It does connect quickly and easily. It does require that this power lead needs to run through the vehicle's battery to supply the power.

It does include this taillight converter to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. Since this is a powered module, that's why you would run this to the battery of your vehicle, it'll connect directly to the battery when it's overloading your vehicle's electrical system. This is constructed using a surface mount technology. It gives you consistent reliable performance. It helps maximize the trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. It does ensure superior operation in rough road condition.

A few specs on this. There's a maximum lighting load capacity for the stop and turn light would be 4.2 amps per circuit and for the taillights would be 7.5 amps. When you go to install this, you can see there's the pigtail wires right here. There's a pigtail green wire. Basically what you do is go to the rear because this would come out of the rear view vehicle and you'll use the included double-faced tape to attach this module to your vehicle. You'd start on the driver side.

You use these wires that have the yellow wire in it. That would determine it is for the driver side. Then using these quick splice connectors that are included, you can connect these wires. You'd have to test your wires and make sure you get them connected correctly. Connect these wires to the connect circuit.

The white wire with the eyelet on, you want to ground to a good clean ground. You could use the screw already on the car or they even include a mounting screw, grounding screw for you. What you have to do is run this extra length of green wire over to your passenger side of the vehicle. Again, behind the taillights, you want to use a quick splice connector to splice this into the wire over there. Then, what you want to do is run this power wire to the 12-volt positive post on the battery to supply the power. You would have to have an extra length of wires and fuses and fuse holder. We do sell a separate kit that you can use with this to include all that stuff. That's part number 55151. That's the Curt Powered Converter Wiring Kit. We do sell that separately on our website and it is also listed on this part number product page as a related product. That kit would include about 20 feet of 12-gauge wire, includes an in-line fuse holder, a 10-amp fuse, and some other hardware. Basically, what you will do then is you will use that wire, run this with that length of wire to the battery, run it through the fuse holder with the 10-amp fuse in it and that would supply the power to this converter. This also includes a nice rubber dust cover which you can use on here when you're not using the 4-way at the back of your vehicle. This does cover on. You can just install the cap to help protect it from many elements. It does also come with a nice set of instructions which are pretty detailed. It shows some good pictures of where the location points are. It also comes with some zip ties to take up any extra slack of the wire. That should do it for the review on part number C56190, the Curt 3 Wire to 2 Wire Converter with the 4-Way Flat Output. .

Not that easy to install. I ended up finding another harness that doesn't require tapping into the existing wiring like this one. I wish I would've found it first. 211234

- C56190

Everything was quite straight-forward and worked as expected. The only downside was the length of the green wire. My routing on a BMW X3 (not a huge vehicle) was straight across the rear of the vehicle to the passenger side wiring. But the green wire was so short, I had to move the mounting location of the module to avoid adding a splice. Another foot of green wire would be a plus. 669199

Do you have a question about this Wiring?

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Mercedes GLK350
  • The ZCI Trailer Wiring kit part # 119250KIT that you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Mercedes GLK350 as it can basically be installed on any vehicle and since it does not require cutting or splicing into the vehicles wiring it would not void any warranties either. Instead of splicing into the wires the sensors of this kit just clamp around them and sense that voltage is being carried on the wire and that is what is used to signal which trailer wiring circuit needs to activated....

  • Right Trailer Turn Signal Stays On Using Curt T-Connector On 2008 Chrysler Town and Country
  • I concur, it does indeed sound like you have a faulty control module. That said, the control modules are not replaceable by themselves so you will need to obtain an entire new trailer wiring harness unfortunately as you are out of the warranty period as well. For replacement, I would actually go with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118552 as we tend to find that this brand makes the most reliable wiring products therefore the control module will last longer. The good news is that...

  • 4-Pole Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Audi Q5
  • Trailer wiring harnesses are offered in both powered and non-powered types, as you note. Powered converters offer the advantage of better isolation of the trailer lights' current demand from the tow vehicle's wiring. Non-powered harnesses use the tow vehicle tail light wiring to deliver the actual current needed by the trailer lights. In some cases this could lead to overload of the vehicle's wiring. For your 2014 Audi Q5 I suggest the powered converter # 119190KIT from Tow Ready. This...
