Correct Weight Distribution System Rating for 1,200 lb Loaded Trailer Tongue Weight

Question:

We just bought our first camper from some friends and the trailer came with a weight distribution hitch with a max tongue weight of 1000 lbs. Our trailer tongue weight is 1208 lbs. I’m assuming that’s not good. Should I buy one with a max weight of 1200 lbs or one in the 1400 lb range? Sorry for the dumb question.

Weight distribution can be a bit confusing so don't feel alone in trying to figure this out!

You are 100% correct that the 1,000 lb system isn't rated high enough. Going with something in the 1,400 lb range like the Curt # C17063 you were looking at is more in line with what you're needing since you want the loaded tongue weight of your trailer PLUS the weight of anything behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle to fall in the middle of the tongue weight range of your weight distribution system.

The Curt MV is a decent weight distribution system but I usually recommend against using the friction sway control brackets simply because you have to disconnect it prior to backing up. For something that's rated properly and uses an integrated sway control I recommend checking out the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1500.
