Hub-Piloted Wheel

This wheel is hub piloted, which means that it centers on the hub, not the lugs. The wheel requires the use of flange nuts (sold separately) for installation.

Corrosion-Resistant Finish

The steel wheel goes through a 3-step finishing process that makes it both attractive and corrosion resistant. The wheel is first submerged in a zinc phosphate bath to ensure good paint adhesion. It is then e-coated with an acrylic primer base and finished on both sides with baked-on DuPont powder paint.

Provider Radials

Provider radials are constructed with double polyester cords and double steel belts for increased durability and endurance. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation. Provider radials are bake tested - a process usually reserved for automotive tires - to ensure that the rubber holds up over time.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - TA56VR

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Taskmaster Provider 235/75R17.5 radial tire in a load range J on this 17 1/2 inch silver solid center wheel with an offset and the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is ideal for heavy-duty trucks and trailers. Uses a heavy-duty steel wheel that has the solid center design, makes it very sturdy and corrosion resistant. The wheel itself goes through a three-step finishing process, which will first include a zinc phosphate bath, then an e-coat primer, and then a silver powder coat on both sides of the wheel.

There's the front of the wheel and rotate around, there's the back of the wheel. Now, this is a hub-piloted wheel, which will center on the hub, so it does require a close fit of the center hole right here to the hub. The diameter on this opening, the pilot hole diameter is 4.76 inches. Now, hub-piloted wheels do require the use of flange nuts for installation. Those we do sell separately on our website.

They're usually listed on this product page as a related product. The flange nut size it would use is 5/8 inch by 18. Now, we mentioned this wheel has a negative offset of .19 inches. And negative offsets would mean that the hub mounting surface, which is this portion right back here on the back of the wheel is behind the wheel center line. So, the wheel center line would right, would be right in the middle of the wheel.

So, this has a negative offset and that'll move the tire away from the center line of the wheel. Now, the tire on this is a radial tire. It is constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords for a nice long life. It is great for highway use. They do use a nylon tread-firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation.

And the tire is bake tested to ensure that the rubber holds up over time. This tire is created specifically for heavy-duty trucks and trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This whole wheel assembly meets the DOT, the Department of Transportation specifications, and it will exceed the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Few dimensions on this, starting with the wheel. The diameter on the wheel will always be measured inside to inside, so on this wheel is 17 1/2 inches diameter. The width on just the wheel by itself is gonna be right at 6 3/4 inches wide. The bolt pattern on this wheel is an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you want to measure that on a wheel that's an even number of lugs, in this case, eight lugs, it's pretty easy because the lug holes are directly across from each other. So, all you have to do is pick any hole, let's say, this one. Measure from the center of this hole, directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. So on this, it'll measure 6 1/2 inches, so it's an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And the wheel does have a weight capacity of 6,005 pounds. Now, the tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, 235/75R17.5. The R means it is a radial tire. The section width on this is gonna be 9.2 inches. Overall diameter, from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 31.4 inches. We mentioned this tire is a load range J, that means it's an 18 ply rated tire, so it does have a maximum load capacity of 6,005 pounds at 127 psi. And then the last thing I do wanna mention is most all the new tire, tires like this are coming through with a speed rating on them. And the speed rating is stamped on the sidewall by a letter designation. And where you'll find that is right after the size we just went over. You'll see a section that'll have two numbers for the load index, and then a letter M stamped after it that stands for 81 miles per hour. But that should do it for the review on this Taskmaster Provider 235/75R17.5 radial tire in a load range J on this 17 1/2 inch silver solid center wheel with an offset and the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern..

Review from a similar Provider Solid Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

The tire came only 3 days after I ordered it & it was as advertised. It would have been nice if UPS WOULD have put their heavy stickers on the wrap that came from the factory. It took a lot to remove all of the stickers off the tire
