Optronics BUL52 Series LED Backup Light Dimensions

Sonically Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of this light makes it ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. The housing and lens are sonically sealed together to create a single unit, which means that water will not get into the light and damage the diodes or circuit board.

Video Transcript for Optronics Trailer Lights - Tail Lights - BUL52CB Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number BUL52CB. This is the Optronics Sealed 6 1/2" Oval LED Trailer Backup Light. It is a flush mount design with a grommet that's going to be sold separately with part number A70GB. You can find that right here at etrailer.com. The clear oblong light is going to function as a backup light. It's going to feature a sealed, waterproof housing and lens unit, using a corrosion resistant design. It's going to feature 36 LEDs.

Here at the rear, for the connection, it will accept industry standard two prong plug. Now, don't let this connection point confuse you. You're going to see that it has a connection point for a three prong plug, but it only uses one function, which is the reverse function, so it just needs a ground and the reverse function. That's where the two prong plug is called for. Once we connect the two prong plug, those are going to be sold separately. You can see there that it has a rectangular shape and it's actually going to cover up one of the connections that's not being used to prevent any dirt or moisture from getting in there and causing any damage, so the two prong connection is all you need even though it does have a three prong setup here at the rear of the light.

It's very simple to upgrade from incandescent lights. Again it will flush mount with the grommet that's sold separately. To go over the overall dimensions it's going to give us an overall length of six and a half inches. It's going to give us an overall width of two and five sixteenths of an inch and then it's going to give us an overall depth including the connection point of one and thirteen sixteenths of an inch and then the portion here at the front of the light it's going to give us a depth of about seven eighths of an inch. The light draws zero point two seven five amps at 12.8 volts and it does meet FMVSS108 requirements in any 360 degree position. We're going to go ahead and hook it up to our external power source and show you what it looks like with power running to it and with our overhead lights turned off, so we just need to go ahead and make our connection points and then we can turn off our overhead lights and turn on our power source.

So you can see there we got a nice consistent LED clear light coming through providing a lot of light. You've got all 36 LED's functioning providing a nice strong signal. That's going to do it for today's review of part number BUL52CB this is Optronics Sealed 6 1/2" Oval LED trailer backup light. .

Used for backup lights on horse trailer and hoped they would double as loading/staging lights. Adequate for backup only. Expected more from that many diodes at that price. Well-made product that should update to easily available higher performance diodes. 77101

Comments

Remember, DOT regulates how bright a back up light can be. Since Optronics builds this as a back up light, it will not be any brighter than reverse lights are allowed to be under DOT regulations.

Very disappointed in the brightness, especially considering the price. I replaced my older incandescent backup light on one side only to compare. The old light lit up the area behind the trailer MUCH better than the LED light. The LED light is much more directional and the old light more like a flood light. If I got down on at eye level with the lights the LED light appeared to be only slightly brighter. The incandescent of course had a much warmer glow but it lit up the back of the garage much better than the LED. I installed the backup lights a couple years because I wanted an assist light when backing the boat in the dark. I'll keep these ONLY because I want to match the LED tail lights that I just installed. I am much happier with those so will keep both (STL22RB). Bottom line, at roughly $40 a piece I expected much better when compared to the incandescent lights they replaced. Definitely NOT worth the money in my opinion. 81459

Comments

We have noticed the same. These 36 diode versions are using much older LED technology and have less light output than some of the newer 10 diode models. Part BUL10CB will provide much more light output than this unit, and it even costs less. These older LEDs offered a reduced amperage consumption, but not a brightness increase over their incandescent counterparts. Newer LED technology consumes less and outputs more than the incandescent equivalents.

I have these lights wired to a toggle switch and they still work fine. I would not mind if they were brighter, but they still light up my flatbed well enough that I can hook up a gooseneck trailer in the dark. I have ordered other products from etrailer and the customer service is still great.

The boat ramp I use has no lighting and I was hoping these LED backup lights would be bright enough to show me the way. The light from them is diffused quite a bit and not as directional as I had hoped. They are still brighter than the ones I had before. I then bought some reflective cones to put on the edges of the ramp and they light up real well and can be seen from quite a ways away. 55129

Do you have a question about this Trailer Light?

  • Comparing Brightness Ratings of Optronics LED Tail Lights
  • The Optronics LED Backup Light # BUL22CB is brighter than backup light # BUL10CB although I would not describe it as significant, though that can be subjective. Optronics measures the brightness of their lights using candelas and the # BUL10CB has a candela rating of 125, while the # BUL22CB has a candela rating of 160. There is also the backup light # BUL52CB which has a candela rating of 175. The reason I would not classify the brightness as significantly higher is because these...

  • I'll do my best to be just as helpful as Rebecca. I do have a few options for you depending on the exact size you'll need. I know you said you aren't worried about being compliant with the DOT but the best options we have both are. The Optronics GloLight LED Backup Light # BUL111CB is a 6-1/2 inch by 2-3/8 inch light that will fit into an opening of 6-7/8 by 2-1/2 inches. It's a clear lens with 22 diodes. All of the different sizes and shapes of GloLights we have get very good...

  • Why is the Optronics LED Clear Oval Trailer Utility Light # BUL72CB Not Certified as a Backup Light
  • The Sealed, 6-1/2 inch Oval LED Trailer Utility Light, Flange Mount, 10 Super Diode - Clear, item # BUL78CB, does not meet DOT FMVSS 108 requirements, for backup lights so it cannot be sold as a backup light. That does not mean that the light cannot be used in that situation for applications where a DOT requirement does not need to be met. In short, the Trailer Utility Light, item # BUL78CB, can be used as a backup light, but if your trailer needs to meet DOT requirements you will need...

  • What is the Brightest 12 Volt Fully Submersible Backup Light Available
  • If you are looking for a round backup light then I recommend part # BUL53CB but if you are looking for an oval backup light then I recommend part # BUL52CB. Both of these backup lights are completely submersible. The round light has 36 diodes with a 275 candella rating and the oval light has 36 diodes with a 175 candella rating therefore the round light will be a bit brighter than the oval light. In order to mount the round light you will also need part # A45GB or part # A70GB for the...

  • Is the LED Oval Trailer Utility Light Brighter than the Incandescent Oval Trailer Back Up Light
  • I went out to the warehouse and checked all of our clear oval lights. The Sealed, 6-1/2 inch LED Clear Oval Trailer Utility Light, 10 Diode, item # BUL72CB, whiter light than the light emitted by the incandescent Oval Trailer Back Up Light, item # BU70CB, but the light does not illuminate as large an area as well. The advantages of the LED light is that it does not draw near as much amperage as the incandescent light, it lasts much longer and it does not produce the heat produced by incandescent...

  • Output of the Optronics 6-1/2 inch Oval Trailer Lights
  • Optronics uses candelas to rate the brightness of their lights instead of lumens and the output of the Optronics 6-1/2 inch Oval LED Back Up light, # BUL52CB, is 175 candela. At a distance of 1 foot, the candela output is equal to the output in lumens. The next brightest 6-1/2 inch oval light would be the part # BUL22CB which has an output of 160 candela. The part # BUL10CB that you referenced has a candela rating of 125 which would make it the dimmest offering which I would not...

  • Need Bright Backup Light on Boat Trailer for Nighttime Use

This 36-LED light uses a 2-wire pigtail # A45CB for connection and can be mounted using rubber grommet # a70gb along with steel bracket # BK70BB. LED lighting combines high-efficiency with high light output and this unit should serve you well without placing much additional load on your trailer wiring.

  • The amp draw is 4.5 amps per light or 9 amps for both lights on the Optronics 55-Watt Halogen, Multi-Directional, Area Utility Light # QH36CTS. If used on your 2004 Chevy Silverado you will need to use the Draw-Tite Wiring Kit # 118151. This kit will allow you to run a separate 12 gauge wire with a 10 amp in-line fuse to the positive side of the vehicles battery. This will keep the lights from drawing power on your factory wiring harness which could cause problems. You will also want...

  • Can I use a Halogen Spotlight as a Reverse Light to See Better Behind my Horse Trailer
  • These will certainly provide enough light. My concern would be that they provide too much light and would considered rear-facing headlights. There are DOT restrictions about how bright rear-ward facing lights can be so as drivers behind you are not blinded. The Custer Halogen Light you were looking at does not comply with this regulation. I would suggest instead, using brighter reverse lights. We have several backup LED lights that will be brighter than standard incandescent lights,...

At a distance of 1 foot, the candela output is equal to the output in lumens. This light has the highest candela output of any of our 6-1/2 inch oval LED lights. • The wire gauge used in the recommended pig tail # A45PB for the Sealed, 6-1/2" Oval LED Trailer Back Up Light # BUL52CB is 20 gauge. So I would go with that as the minimum. The light uses LED's which hardly draw anything.

  • Recommendation for Utility/Work Lights Installed in Toolbox to Light Rear of Truck
  • I have several lighting options for you, but a trailer reverse light, like # BUL52CB that you mentioned, is not going to provide you with the light you are looking for. To provide you with light at least 8 feet away, I recommend going with a utility/work light. For mounting flush inside the toolbox as you mentioned, the best option will be the Vision X LED Light Strip # XIL-SL12. This light has an effective lumen output of 300 lumens and is 12 inches long x 1 inch wide x 1/2 inch deep....

  • is there a Certain Amount of Time LED Trailer Light BUL52CB Can be On
  • As you probably already know, LED lights draw much less power than regular bulbs. They also do not get as hot so you can have them on longer without worrying about them burning out. There is no official amount of time the lights can be on. As far as which would work better as an interior dome type of light, I would go with # BUL52CB because it has more diodes which would produce more light than # BUL22CB. With either light you will also need a pigtail # A45CB and a grommet, # a70gb.

  • The # BUL52CB lamp you referenced might work for the purpose you describe, but a bracket like part # BK70BB and grommet, part # A70GB would be needed. You would also need the wiring pigtail, part # A45CB. The lamp draws a minimal .275 amps at 12.8 volts. The lamp is submersible, but the contacts at the rear where the pigtail plugs in would be vulnerable to moisture.
