Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Mazda CX5, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw Tite Class II Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 36601.Here's what our hitch looks like when it's fully installed. It is going to tuck up behind the bumper nicely, and all we're really going to see is that receiver tube sticking out. It is a class II hitch, which means it's going to give us that inch and 1/4 by inch and 1/4 receiver tube opening, and as you can see it has a nice reinforced collar giving it added strength, and just a nice finished look. All of your accessories are going to mount right here, and it's going to accept a standard 1/2 inch pin and clip. They're not included, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC2. The safety chain connection points are going to be a loop style welded to the bottom, and as you can see, we're not going to have any trouble getting most sized hooks on and off because we do have that extra room, and they are just slightly offset from the pin hole, so we're not going to have to worry about any locking devices or a pin and clip interfering.Your hitch is going to have a 350 pound tongue weight, along with a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. Now, you always want to double check your Mazda's owner's manual to make sure it can handle that amount of weight.

Now let's give you a few measurements that will help you when deciding for accessories from your new hitch, such as a bike rack or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is going to be right about 4 inches. Now, from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's going to be right about 13-1/4 inches. Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like installed and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to put it on.To begin our installation, we're going to come to the very back of our vehicle, and just right underneath the bumper we're going to have a plastic panel that we're going to have to remove. We're going to have one plastic push pin, one on each side.

To remove those I'm going to take a flat head screwdriver, there's going to be a little indention on either side, and you're going to want to pop out that center section first, which will release the tension. Then we can pop the rest of the clip out. We'll go ahead and do that for the other one, too. Now, if we just move towards the center just a little bit, there's going to be a square hole right there. We're going to take our screwdriver and there's going to be a small tab. We're going to push in on that tab, which is going to release the plastic panel.

Then we can pull it down. There's going to be one on each side. Now in order to get our hitch in place, we're going to need to lower our exhaust down. Before we do, I'm going to take a little bit of spray lubricant, and I'm going to spray down the rubber isolator, making it a little bit easier to pull that hanger out. We're going to have one right next to our tailpipe, and then one right behind it.

We're going to have two on each side, so we can go ahead and spray the other ones also. Now you're just going to take a pry bar, and your main goal here is just to slide that rubber isolator off of the post here so that we can lower it down. Now that we have one removed, we're going to go ahead and put a strap to support our exhaust so it doesn't fall down all the way. You're going to want to find a sturdy location to put your strap up. Then we can go ahead and work on removing the rest of the hangers. You'll want to adjust your straps so that you have enough room to get the hitch in between the exhaust and the bumper here, but you don't want your exhaust to hang down too far.We come to the very back of our frame rail, we're going to see we have a rather large hole, and if we move forward just before our rubber hanger for our exhaust, we're going to have two oblong holes. Now, the one closer to the front of the vehicle is going to be our forward attachment point, and then the large hole is going to be our access hole and our rear attachment point. We'll go ahead and take the fish wire that they provide in our kit, put the coiled end in to the frame, and we're going to feed it back until we can reach it, or have it come out through the access hole.Once you have your pull wire through, you're going to take your square spacer block and you're going to go over the coiled end, and then you're going to thread on your 1/2 inch carriage bolt onto the coiled end. Then one piece at a time, we're going to take our spacer block and feed it into the frame. Then we're going to push the bolts into the frame. Then you take your pull wire, start pulling it through until the bolt drops down. For our rear attachment point, we're going to be using the reverse pull wire method. You're going to take your pull wire, slide your spacer block over it, and then thread that carriage bolt on top. Then we're going to feed our bolt in first, and then push our spacer block into the frame as well, and we're going to pull it all back down through. We'll do that for the other side. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to lift our hitch over our exhaust, and you're going to want to put the pull wires through the corresponding holes on your hitch. You may need to pull your fascia out just a little bit, and then make sure you angle those hangers down so you can get around everything. You're going to slide the hitch into position, and you can pull your pull wire off. Once you have one nut on each side making sure that the hitch will support itself, you can go ahead and pull the rest of our pull wires off and get the rest of our hardware in place.I'm going to come back with a 3/4 inch socket and snug up all my hardware. Now we can come back with that same 3/4 inch socket and torque down all of our hardware, and we're going to find that torque specification in our instructions. I'm going to take a little bit more spray lubricant and spray it on that rubber hanger, just making it that much easier to get it back in place. We can lift our exhaust back up, and we can put the rubber isolators back on the hangers. Once we have all our hangers back in place, we can remove the strap. That'll finish up your look at the Draw Tite Class II Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 36601 on our 2017 Mazda CX5.

My hitch for my CX5 installed very easy and I was able to do it myself without any issues. the wiring harness also was easy to install and product has my full approval. I have bought hitches from this site before and will continue to do so. thank you 586515

Another great product from etrailer. Easy fit to my car took about 40 minutes start to finish to fit the hitch and pack everything up. Haven't fitted the wiring yet as I only really needed for a bike carrier at the moment but will do the wiring next weekend ready for spring trips to get mulch etc from the big box stores with my trailer. Only issue you may face like I did is the exhaust hangers may be interfering with the fit, I used a ratchet strap to apply some pressure and that allowed the hitch to go on. Hardest part of the installation is lowering and returning the exhaust, tip is to use a little WD40 on the hangers to help slide on and off. 595552

Installed pretty easily. Looks and fits nicely. Only suggestion I'd give is to make sure to remove the muffler hangers from the muffler, and not the vehicle. 502456

First off my customer service experience with etrailer.com was awesome. The hitch arrived on time and in excellent condition. I installed this on my daughter's 2014 Mazda CX-5 and made her help me. Watched the video provided on the website and had the hitch installed in about 45 minutes. Now she can mount her bike rack with ease and she can tell folks she helped install it !!! Easy as pie. Thanks for a great product and customer service. 520441

2014 Mazda CX-5 - Video shows it goes right in but it did not. It was tuff getting it in with pulling on the bumper, 2 brackets on bumper and the exhaust hanger. But after a little persuasion it went right in. After that it was home free. Installation took a little over an hour. Very happy with it. 587936

Good quality hitch. Easy to install thanks to the etrailer videos. This is my third hitch purchase from etrailer.com, and the buying experience has always been excellent. 483781

Installation was straight forward and easy, with the exception of inadvertently removing the top isolator from the exhaust and having to remove the hitch to fix the issue. Very tight clearances but no rubbing or contact between parts. Provides a very clean appearance. Looking forward to lots of miles on our bikes this summer. 485497

The hitch will be used primarily for a bike rack. As received, one of the side pieces of the hitch that bolts to the car rails was bent inward and needed to be bent out to allow the install. I had dropped the exhaust and then saw that on one side the holes didn’t meet up with those on the car. I called to find out how to proceed and was told the part could be bent into the proper position. I was able to do that with help and then the install was quick and easy as per the instructuctions and video. Result looks very clean. This was my 4th hitch install and the first time I had the hitch arrive bent, but apparently from my phone call it must be a somewhat frequent issue. It would have been quicker if there was a note on that issue with the product. 540376

Product is as described, this particular hitch seems to be nicely concealed behind the bumper as compared to pictures I've seen of other brands. I installed this hitch onto my 2017 CX-5 alone and in about an hour. I was slightly worried about fitment because of the redesigned body for 2017. It bolted up fine and as described, i did however have to leave one small trim piece off due to lack of clearance (pictured). It attaches to the lower skirt of the bumper and extends forward, I've included a picture of the space remaining between the bumper skirt and hitch. I'm not sure what the piece's function is intended to be as it is completely unseen and beneath the car when installed. The same hitch was installed on my 2013 CX-5 and this wasnt an issue. Overall I see no problems arising from the issue and I'm pleased with the product as well as etrailer.com. 432313

Install took an hour and 40 minutes due to bolt alignment mishap where bolt went back into frame and had to reacquire. Once acquired and aligned again with all four bolts the installation completed. Second purchase of an etrailer hitch. Very happy with the quality and use of the hitch. The installation videos and advice are useful for any hitch. 646642

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring
  • You're smart to want the flexibility of a 2 inch hitch receiver; that will offer you many more options in terms of accessories than the smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver. With that in mind, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76138 for your 2017 Mazda CX-5, which is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver. There are no drawbacks to installing this hitch over its Class II counterpart, the Draw-Tite # 36601, as the Class III offers the flexibility you mentioned and is actually three pounds lighter...
