Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Buick LaCrosse - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2013 Buick Lacrosse, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite custom fit class two trailer hitch receiver, offering the inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. Its part number is 36538. Now, here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on our Lacrosse. As you can see, we've got our inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter receiver tube opening. It goes into the connection plate, and you might, if you we're down low enough, see just a little bit of that cross tube there in the back. Also, you're going to notice your safety chain connection plate that comes back. They finished off the end of the receiver tube opening with a little reinforcement collar here.

Kind of gives it a sturdier look. And with it being a class two hitch, it gives you an inch and a quarter by inch and a quarter opening like we said, but it's going to make it pretty versatile. You can use this hitch for hauling needs, cargo carriers, bike racks, or just about anything else they might make for a hitch. Just want to be sure it's rated for class two. When securing those items in place, you'll see we're going to have one half-inch diameter pinhole. Again, you want to choose class two rated accessories, but it looks like there's going to be enough room on either side for whatever type you might choose.

Your safety chain connection points are going to be kind of an oval shape. Plenty of room there, so whatever size safety chains you might connect shouldn't really have any kind of an issue there. When choosing accessories to use in your hitch, I would recommend something that has a raised shank. You'll want to use that raised shank to kind of get better ground clearance at the back of that item. For towing and hauling, bike racks, cargo carriers, the hitch is going to give us a 300 pound tongue weight rating. So that's the maximum downward force we can put at our receiver tube opening, and we have a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

So that would be the total weight of your trailer and anything you we're to load up on it. You'll definitely want to check the owner's manual on the Lacrosse, though, to see what it's rated for and use whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now, a few measurements that'll be helpful for selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside tap edge of the receiver tube opening. We've got about 11 inches. Then, from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's going to be about 5.Now, to begin our installation, we're going to have two bolts that we're going to remove. They're both going to be located on the inside of our tailpipes here, and it's on the upper hangar.

So it should . if you come just beside the tailpipe, right above it, you'll see a bolt inside of the tailpipe here, just above it. We'll be taking that bolt out, and we're going to replace it with one in our hardware kit. All right. So that bolt comes out, and we're going to be replacing it with this bolt. This is in our hardware kit. Now, we'll torque that down to the specifications listed in our instructions, and we'll do the exact same thing for our passenger side, as well. Now, we're going to get our bracket installed on the forward connection point. You'll see the arm that comes up. This is an alignment adjuster. We're going to go in the hole that's right here in the end. We're going to be using bracket B. That's the one with the 90 degree bend. We'll be using a half inch bolt. Got the wedge spacer, conical tooth washer. Now, we want the thicker portion of this spacer to face towards the rear of the vehicle. Then, we've got another spacer. This time, the thicker portion should face towards the front of the vehicle, so it'll look like that. Bring that in position. We're just going to be threading that into our handle, then. Now, the bolt that we installed previously on the exhaust holder or exhaust hanger, we're going to place two flat washers on. And we need those to go over that weld nut. These are going to act as spacers, and we'll do that on both sides. Now, we'll take the rear hitch section. We're going to guide it up over those same bolts. Then, we're going to place on one of the smaller conical tooth washers with the teeth facing towards the hitch, and we'll thread on one of the small hex nuts. We'll do that on both sides. Now, we'll take bracket B. We're going to put it in place. We've got our half inch bolt, conical tooth washer with the teeth facing in, and our two wedges. Those are going to go through the hole and thread into the handle nut. And we want to adjust our spacers to level out our bracket as much as possible, so I'm going to have my thicker part on the bottom of the inside and up on the outside. You may have to adjust yours a little bit differently, but you have the idea to get this as parallel as possible to the ground.Just leave that loosely installed for now. Then, we can grab the center section of our hitch. Now, we're going to bring our four carriage bolts down through the hitch plate. We're going to use the four rearmost holes, so they're the four holes closest to the rear of the vehicle. We'll guide the oblong holes in our center section over the bolt, then place on a conical tooth washer and a hex nut. We'll attach that same hardware in all four locations. We place our half inch bolt up through our bracket, conical tooth washer on top, and then our hex nut. Now, with everything started, it's time to go through and torque down all of our fasteners to the appropriate specification. Those, you're going to find listed in the instructions. Now, the handle nut that you've got here, you can use snips or shears or a rotary tool. We'll just trim that off. With everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite custom fit class two trailer hitch receiver, part number 36538, on our 2013 Buick Lacrosse.

Shipment was quick. Installation was not too bad. Looking at 2-2 and half hours , working alone. Only disappointment is the hitch receiver is not quite 1 and a quarter inch. Bought three drawbars from three different stores and very difficult to push into hole. Had to use a rubber mallet to get them out once in. Same thing with bicycle rack. Hitch hole is too tight. If I remove bicycle rack too many times with rubber mallet, I will start to destroy the mettle. Will have to grind down drawbar and bicycle rack to get into hitch easier. I didn't count on having to do modifications . Extra time and money. 611564

Before purchasing, I picked out what I thought were the best trailer hitch and wiring harness for my car and emailed etrailer asking if my selections were correct. Mike at etrailer recommended a different hitch and wiring harness explaining the advantages of his choices, and created a web page with all of the information I needed. After purchasing the hitch and wiring kit I requested a price match by emailing them links to lower priced items. etrailer refunded me 110% of the difference per their policy. The trailer hitch arrived with quite a few nicks in the paint. etrailer indicated that this is due to the method that the manufacturer uses to ship the hitch parts to them. They could not guarantee that a replacement hitch would be any better. They gave me the option of either receiving another one or refunding me some money to cover the cost of touch up paint. I chose to apply some touch up paint and receive the refund which was $[....]. The installation instructions were easy to follow. The installation on my 2013 Malibu was easy. No drilling was required, just removing and installing bolts and nuts. etrailer's service was excellent and they are very easy to work with. I would have given this 5 stars if not for the paint nicks. 250327

One year later, and still loving the hitch I installed. Just used it a month ago to haul my motorcycle on a small trailer about a thousand miles. And attached picture of trailer hooked up before taking scrap metal to dump. Beat up utility trailer looks funny hooked up to a new Impala, and my friends keep asking why I don't just get a truck. I figure my hitch and wiring cost around $200, and the trailer was $250, so a total of $450 a year ago is way less than monthly payments on a truck. I think people forget the time when not every family had an SUV or truck, and cars were pulling everything. I agree that with a front wheel drive, there are limits, but I'm not hauling pontoon boats and front end loaders. Also, I recommend the European style hitch, since with the right length, you can have the ball just past the bumper, and looks way better. I'm hoping to get another hitch soon on etrailer for my Chevy Trax to use for cargo tray or bicycle rack. 538846

Installed in about 5 minutes. Used the video and paused. Only complaint was I was short 3 large nuts for assembly. Plan on using it for a hitch mounted carrier system for ice fishing and a back up for in case I get stuck 456532

I rated this Draw-Tite 36538 hitch 5-stars because of the build quality (including painted finish) and the ease of installation on my 2014 Malibu LTZ AND the fine customer service I received from etrailer personnel. Also it appears to be beefy and rock solid for a Class II hitch. To be truthful the first hitch I received had the receiver end off-center with the rear of the car maybe 1/2" to 3/4". I thought I had misunderstood the directions so I contacted etrailer customer service by phone (no waiting) and received a huge apology and a promise to send me out a replacement hitch kit ASAP. Vanessa N. sounded so sincere and concerned that I thought she might just crawl through the phone line to reach out and pat me on the back to comfort me! :-) Two days later I had the replacement and found that only the receiver portion of the kit (that is the part that attaches to the muffler hanger brackets) had to be replaced. To do this I only had to remove 2 small nuts and 4 large nuts and slip the replacement receiver into place. That took maybe 15 minutes. At last every thing lined up perfectly then. The next day FedEx arrived at the door with return authorization in hand to pick up the original box containing just the old receiver and the remaining new replacement parts which I did not have to use. Done, and I am very happy with the results and the customer service response I received. This whole thing could have been a major headache but etrailer made it an extremely fast and convenient proposition. Well done. Oh, and one thing I like about this Draw-Tite hitch receiver is it is nicely tucked in under the bumper and does not protrude as much as other hitches I could have chosen. PS-I'd also like to thank George J. for setting me up with my own personal site describing all parts I would need to do a full hookup, plus an extremely helpful video showing me exactly how to install all parts. A great servic George! Thanks again. 446482

Am pleased with product. The two bolts that had to be replaced at the hanger brackets where a little hard to get changed cause I couldn’t get my hand in there but everything else was all good. Delivery was was very good and am happy with everything overall 649617

Nice Product, Fast Delivery. Package was short 4 - 1/2" nuts which caused a delay in my install. I installed this hitch on a 2013 Cadillac XTS and it did not go as smooth as the other examples videos on Chevy and Buicks. The Hitch hits bottom side of Bumper so I loosened it back up and added a piece of rubber for protection of the bumper and to stop any vibration. Hitch would not fit per directions , I had to back off the two long bolts at the muffler support in order to get the Hitch portion on. Rear part of the hitch sits pretty low, taking away some ground clearance. But it gets me a spot for my bike carrier , which is great. Happy with Etrailer as this is my third hitch from them, Always best price and fast service. 641125

I found the instruction clear and the hitch was an easy install for me. All the parts were there and it was very easy to install once I had the rear of the car up on my ramps. I found the product to be made of heavy duty components. The trailer wiring harness was an easy install too with clear instructions every step of the way. I am very impressed with these products. 636828

Daniel, thank you for your review. There are two brackets in the hardware, bracket A and bracket B. Bracket A was the correct bracket for your 2015 Chevrolet Malibu. Bracket B is for mid year 2013 models on FWD vehicles and the Buick Lacrosse. Bracket A is for all other models. You will have one bracket left over.

I received the hitch much faster than expected, so installing it had to wait. The shipping box was very big, bigger than needed. Part of the hitch broke through the box and damaged the paint. The Drawbar was out of it's package and also had paint damage. Question!, why powder coat the parts if you don't care about protecting them in transport. Dumb! When I installed the hitch, everything went together well---- almost. The two 8mm x 55mm bolts (#1) for the tailpipe hanger were too short. I had to remove two of the four 1/2" flat washers to get the nut to thread onto the bolt. Apparently, figuring out the correct amount of thread length needed for strength, when threaded into the nut, is not one of Draw-Tite's greatest engineering skills. The diameter of the bolt = 8mm. Therefor the minimum threaded into the nut must be 8mm or preferably more. I am ordering longer bolts to do the job right. I believe the hitch will serve my needs and your company was good to deal with. 509163

Straightforward installation with the you tube video specific to the Chevy Impala. When I called to ask for the best hitch for the Chevy Impala premier (dual exhaust) I was told the #36538 is the best choice. E-trailer treats the customer right. 506017

Great product. I put this on my 2014 Impala, no drilling and everything came in the box as expected. I recommend using tin snips for the minor trimming to the rear fascia, it's very easy to do and this hitch installs in about an hour. Lay out the bolts, washers and nuts in order before you start so that you put them on the proper way, other than that it only takes about 8 bolts and nuts to assemble the whole thing. 440773

Received the hitch in good order. Inventoried and set to work installing. I watched the accompanied video on the product web page and followed the instructions given. The front mount on the cross member frame was a bit of a struggle but once the other bolts were loosened more I was able to align everything. After torquing the bolts to the specification on the work sheet, it was complete. About 1 hour from putting the car on ramps and off again. In the past I have installed 3 other hitches from etrailer. 406127

This kit should have longer M8 bolts for the exhaust hangar. They are not long enough to hold the conical washer and hex nut. I had to replace the conical washer with a plain flat washer to get the nut started. It barely tightens through all threads in the nut. The bolt needs to be at least 1/4 inch longer to fit the conical washer. Perhaps the weld nut sits too high on my vehicle for the bolt to protrude enough. Sending longer bolts would have made the installation easier and correct. 403839

Great information for helping to decide which hitch to use as well as how it will fit on the car. Arrived quickly and was exactly as described. Installation information on the site very helpful. Included instructions easy to follow. Hitch was VERY easy to install (45 minutes - was taking my time). Looks good on the car (2014 Impala). 395347

Both the hitch and the bike rack have worked flawlessly over the last year and both still look brand new. Given the experience my son just bought a hitch from etrailer for his Odyssey, which was also straightforward to install and looks great.

I need a hitch for my 2014 Impala LTZ . E trailer had what I needed and after talking to a tech I decided on the Draw-Tite hitch . It installed quite easily except a person had to really contort their hand to get up to the 2 bolts on the muffler hanger , finally getting to them with an air ratchet . Once that was conquered the rest fell into place very good with little effort . Thanks guys 353358

Thanks for the follow up and reply. I did want to advise you that the hitch manufacturer's do not recommend re-using the the installation hardware. If should only be used once since it is torque to speck. Replacement hardware is available as part # RHK you would just need to enter your Hitch manufacturer and your hitch item number.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C12115 is confirmed as a fit for your Impala. This is a Class ll hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Per Curt, all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. For that reason I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 36538. • Best Trailer Hitch for Use with Bike Rack on a 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ
  • The best trailer hitch we have for your 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36538 which is a custom fit and will not require any drilling. The Draw-Tite option is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. I like the Draw-Tite hitches as they do not require the use of an added support strap like the Curt hitches will. You can see how it installs using the attached video on a similar 2015 Chevrolet Impala. Please note that you will be limited...

  • Towing Capacity and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Chevy Impala
  • From what I found online it looks like your 2017 Chevy Impala has a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs. If the weight of your trailer loaded is less than 1,000 lbs then yes you could tow it. For a hitch then we have the Draw Tite part # 36538 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and would work well. For a ball mount you'd then want the # 36061 which is the recommended ball mount by Draw Tite. For a hitch ball part # 19257. For trailer wiring you'd then want the Tekonsha kit part # 118590...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Harness for 2013 Chevy Malibu 2LT
  • The Curt CIass II hitch you mentioned, part # C12115 is indeed a fit for your 2014 Chevy Malibu. If you're planning on using the hitch exclusively for towing, the hitch would work just fine for you. However, if you also plan on using the hitch as an attachment point for hitch mounted accessories like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, I'd recommend you go with the Draw-Tite Class II, part # 36538. Curt's warranty stipulates that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 needs to be used for...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Chevy Impala Premier
  • The Impala Premier models do have a similar fit to the other models. I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36538 for your 2017 Impala Premier which is a confirmed fit. It is a Class II hitch receiver that will give you the support needed and allow for the dual exhaust pipes. If you will be towing, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118590 which installs behind your tail lights. You will then run a wire to your battery to...

  • How Much Trimming is Required for Installation of Trailer Hitch Receivers on 2017 Chevrolet Impala
  • The Draw-Tite # 36538 is the trailer hitch receiver that fits your 2017 Chevrolet Impala. If you take a look at the video of the hitch being installed that I've attached, at around the 6:40 mark you'll see the optional cutting being described. It isn't required but there is some cutting that can be performed for the install. This is the same area that needs to be trimmed for the Curt # C12115. Which is also shown in the other video around the 1:35 mark.

  • Trailer Hitch Comparison for 2016 Chevy Impala
  • The only difference between the Hidden Hitch # 90242 (no longer available) and the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36538 that you referenced is that the Hidden Hitch comes with a ball mount and a hitch pin and clip. Aside from that they are identical hitches. Curt is a different company so while the design is very similar, the hitch is made slightly different. The biggest differences are that Curt hitches are made in the USA and they require a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 when used with...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2015 Chevy Impala LTZ
  • Your assessment of the trailer hitches for the 2015 Chevy Impala LTZ are correct. Curt trailer hitch # C12115, Draw-Tite hitch # 36538, and Hidden Hitch # 90242 (no longer available) all install in a similar fashion at the same places. the Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch models even share the same instructions. Quality wise all of the hitches meet or exceed industry standards. Some people tend to like the finish on the Curt hitches better. All three of these hitches fit both LT and LTZ...

  • Best Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2013 Buick Regal GS
  • Because of the differences between GS and non-GS models of the 2013 Buick Regal, theDraw-Tite # 36522 will physically not fit the GS models. The Curt # C12115 and Draw-Tite # 36538 are the only options for GS models. It may not be as hidden as you would like but keep in mind that in order to really see the cross tube of the hitch or really any other part of it other than the receiver you would have to get fairly low to the ground. If you need a hitch the only other option would be to...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2015 Buick Regal GS
  • We carry hitches from two manufacturers, Cequent Performance Products, who manufactures Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite and Curt Manufacturing. In terms of overall build quality and the quality of the finish, the hitches from both companies are pretty equal. I agree with you about the quality of Curt products. That said, the Curt trailer hitch # C12115 is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Buick Regal GS. Trimming of the fascia is required for the Impala models, but not for the Regal GS. We don't...
