Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Impala - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala we're going to review and install the Draw-Tite class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number 36538. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once installed. As you can see, we've got a square crosstube design and a fully welded construction. It's got a nice black powder-coated finish so it blends in with the underbody of our vehicle. We'll have a chain hold down on each side of our class two 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube, and we're capable of up to 300 pounds of tongue weight and 3,500 pound tow capacity. Next we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/2".

From the top of the receiver tube opening down to the ground is 11-1/2". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Next we'll go ahead and show you the minimum tools required for installing this hitch. Got a 13mm socket, 3/4" socket, ratchet for each socket, and a torque wrench. Now to begin our install our first step is going to be removing one of the manufacturer's exhaust hanger bolts. Now with the fastener out we'll go ahead and set it aside as it will not be reinstalled, and repeat the same process on the driver side. Next we need to trim the rear lower fascia.

We need to trim it back enough to allow for the hitch receiver tube to sit right behind the body lip. This application, some of the trimming's already been done, but if you take your tape measure and hook it to the corner, you're going to measure over approximately 1-1/2", make a mark, and draw a straight line down the body lip where the fascia will need to be trimmed. A utility knife can be used, but the plastic's pretty think and tough to get through so I recommend using a rotary tool. Now once we have it trimmed out, all of the fascia is to the rear of the body lip and where our hitch crosstube will sit. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the driver side. Now that we've got the fascia trimmed out, we're going to install the new 8mm bolt into the weld nut that we removed the manufacturer's bolt from.

Take the new bolt and simply just thread it in to the same weld nut, reattaching the manufacturer's exhaust bracket and creating our rear attachment points. Once I get it started by hand, we'll go ahead and run it down. Now once we have it tightened down, we're going to go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with the bolt installed, tightened down, and torqued to specifications, this side of our bolt will become our attachment point. To create a shim around the weld nut we're going to take two large flat washers, feed them over the bolt, and over the weld nut.

This will give us a nice flush area to attach the hitch to. Now with the passenger side done, we'll move over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Now with our hardware prepped, we're ready to install the crosstube section of our hitch and we'll secure it with a conical tooth washer, the teeth of the washer will face the hitch, and then a hex nut. Now as we install this hardware it will just be finger tight. Next we're going to install the forward bracket. The forward bracket will attach to the rear axle. The rear axle has a pre-drilled hole that we can use as an attachment point. Our forward bracket will line up with the attachment point and our center section, noting that the angle cut on the forward bracket is the one that will be nearest the exhaust. It goes in line or contouring with the exhaust so we don't create any rattling or banging going on. Now to secure the forward bracket to the axle we'll have a 1/2" bolt and conical tooth washer. It will go through the bracket, into the axle, and get secured on the other side with a handle nut. Let's go ahead and put it in place. Again, we're just installing this hardware finger tight this time. Next we're going to install the center section. The center section will attach the front bracket to the crossmember and support plate. We'll be using the forward four attachment points to secure the center section to our crosstube and plate. Using the 1/2" carriage bolt we'll go down through the support plate. Then once the center section is positioned, it will go through the center section, through a 1/2" conical tooth washer, the teeth of the washer will face the center section, and then a hex nut. Let's go ahead and put it in place now. For right now this hardware will just be secured finger tight. Now to secure our forward bracket to the center section we're going to use the 1/2" bolt that's 2" long, with a 1/2" conical tooth washer, go through the center section, and then through the forward bracket. On the top to secure it we'll have a second 1/2" conical tooth washer and then a hex nut. Now with all our hardware in place we can go ahead and tighten it down and torque it all to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now once all my fasteners are tightened and torqued to specifications, quick tech tip: I recommend to trim off the handle nut. Now to trim it you could use a sharp pair of side cutters, a rotary tool, or in this case we're just going to use a pair of tin snips. Cutting it off will get it out of the way and avoid potentially picking up some road debris. With that, we're ready to hit the road. There you have it for the review and install of the Draw-Tite class two 1-1/4" receiver tube hitch, part number 36538, on our 2015 Chevrolet Impala. .

Fantastic product. Easy install to factory frame. The instructions were not super easy to follow, but the pictures helped fill in the questions. Would purchase again and recommend to others looking for an easy, durable and stout receiver for their passenger car. 461851

Shipment was quick. Installation was not too bad. Looking at 2-2 and half hours , working alone. Only disappointment is the hitch receiver is not quite 1 and a quarter inch. Bought three drawbars from three different stores and very difficult to push into hole. Had to use a rubber mallet to get them out once in. Same thing with bicycle rack. Hitch hole is too tight. If I remove bicycle rack too many times with rubber mallet, I will start to destroy the mettle. Will have to grind down drawbar and bicycle rack to get into hitch easier. I didn't count on having to do modifications . Extra time and money. 611564

2017 Chevrolet Impala

One year later, and still loving the hitch I installed. Just used it a month ago to haul my motorcycle on a small trailer about a thousand miles. And attached picture of trailer hooked up before taking scrap metal to dump. Beat up utility trailer looks funny hooked up to a new Impala, and my friends keep asking why I don't just get a truck. I figure my hitch and wiring cost around $200, and the trailer was $250, so a total of $450 a year ago is way less than monthly payments on a truck. I think people forget the time when not every family had an SUV or truck, and cars were pulling everything. I agree that with a front wheel drive, there are limits, but I'm not hauling pontoon boats and front end loaders. Also, I recommend the European style hitch, since with the right length, you can have the ball just past the bumper, and looks way better. I'm hoping to get another hitch soon on etrailer for my Chevy Trax to use for cargo tray or bicycle rack. 538846

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Before purchasing, I picked out what I thought were the best trailer hitch and wiring harness for my car and emailed etrailer asking if my selections were correct. Mike at etrailer recommended a different hitch and wiring harness explaining the advantages of his choices, and created a web page with all of the information I needed. After purchasing the hitch and wiring kit I requested a price match by emailing them links to lower priced items. etrailer refunded me 110% of the difference per their policy. The trailer hitch arrived with quite a few nicks in the paint. etrailer indicated that this is due to the method that the manufacturer uses to ship the hitch parts to them. They could not guarantee that a replacement hitch would be any better. They gave me the option of either receiving another one or refunding me some money to cover the cost of touch up paint. I chose to apply some touch up paint and receive the refund which was $[....]. The installation instructions were easy to follow. The installation on my 2013 Malibu was easy. No drilling was required, just removing and installing bolts and nuts. etrailer's service was excellent and they are very easy to work with. I would have given this 5 stars if not for the paint nicks. 250327

I haven't towed anything with it yet but the installation was quick and simple. I recommend watching the installation video from YouTube. The written directions aren't very helpfully. I had some hardware left over. Not really sure if I missed something or if it was truly extra 509926

Daniel, thank you for your review. There are two brackets in the hardware, bracket A and bracket B. Bracket A was the correct bracket for your 2015 Chevrolet Malibu. Bracket B is for mid year 2013 models on FWD vehicles and the Buick Lacrosse. Bracket A is for all other models. You will have one bracket left over.

The trailer hitch was as expected and mounted up using all the included hardware. Heavy gauge steel and all fasteners are high quality. I recommend this kit. 703939

Had this installed in an hour on an Impala. Fairly easy assembly. However, I question the strength of the installation hardware. It’s held on with 3 bolts. Two of the bolts seem rather small to hold the weight of a trailer and all of the force applied to the hitch as you tow. I’ve installed several trailer hitches on other vehicles, and this one by far has the lightest weight hardware. I feel there should’ve been a better design for this vehicle. 700125

etrailer is a wonderful company! When my hitch arrived it had very easy instructions and watched a YouTube video by etrailer to put hitch on my car. The hitch was missing a piece where the ups driver had accidentally ripped the box and when I noticed it, I called etrailer and they very quickly sent out another piece free of charge!! My hitch works great and looks awesome and was a lot cheaper than buying a truck!! 679879

The only thing I can say, that the hitch is perfect for my wheelchair lift. Perfect distance out from rear of my 2017 Impala and we did not have to trim rear bumper cover only slightly. GREAT PRODUCT, BUT MY BUDDY AND I ARE THINKING ABOUT REMOVING IT AND MY LIFT AND SPRAY PAINT SILVER TO MATCH CAR !,,, 675007

I bought a Draw-Tite hitch for my 2016 Buick LaCrosse to use with a Kuat Transfer 2 bike rack. The search function for selecting the proper hitch from eTrailer was easy to use, and shipping was fast and free. The price for the hitch from eTrailer was very reasonable and my mechanic had no problem doing the install. I saved a lot of money relative to purchase and installation from U-haul. 674979

2013 Cadillac XTS

Nice Product, Fast Delivery. Package was short 4 - 1/2" nuts which caused a delay in my install. I installed this hitch on a 2013 Cadillac XTS and it did not go as smooth as the other examples videos on Chevy and Buicks. The Hitch hits bottom side of Bumper so I loosened it back up and added a piece of rubber for protection of the bumper and to stop any vibration. Hitch would not fit per directions , I had to back off the two long bolts at the muffler support in order to get the Hitch portion on. Rear part of the hitch sits pretty low, taking away some ground clearance. But it gets me a spot for my bike carrier , which is great. Happy with Etrailer as this is my third hitch from them, Always best price and fast service. 641125

I found the instruction clear and the hitch was an easy install for me. All the parts were there and it was very easy to install once I had the rear of the car up on my ramps. I found the product to be made of heavy duty components. The trailer wiring harness was an easy install too with clear instructions every step of the way. I am very impressed with these products. 636828

  • Towing Capacity and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Chevy Impala
From what I found online it looks like your 2017 Chevy Impala has a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs. If the weight of your trailer loaded is less than 1,000 lbs then yes you could tow it. For a hitch then we have the Draw Tite part # 36538 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and would work well. For a ball mount you'd then want the # 36061 which is the recommended ball mount by Draw Tite. For a hitch ball part # 19257. For trailer wiring you'd then want the Tekonsha kit part # 118590...

The best trailer hitch receiver we have for your 2014 Chevrolet Malibu LS is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36538. It is a custom fit that will install using pre drilled holes. It has a class I rating with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. As you can see from the attached video, it is fairly simple to install taking most around 50 minutes. The best trailer hitch we have for your 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36538 which is a custom fit and will not require any drilling. The Draw-Tite option is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. I like the Draw-Tite hitches as they do not require the use of an added support strap like the Curt hitches will. The biggest difference is that the Curt hitch requires stabilization straps # 18050 when using accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier in order to maintain the warranty. The Draw-Tite # 36538 does not have the same requirement and since the owner's manual of your Regal states...

  • Draw Tite Or Curt Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Chevy Malibu LTZ
That's a really good question, but the answer is basically just that the Curt hitch and Draw Tite are made by two separate companies who have their own rating systems and safety precautions. The Curt hitches like the part # C12115 for your 2014 Chevy Malibu LTZ have the stabilizer strap requirement as that's what Curt feels is necessary when using a bike rack to avoid undue stress on the hitch/vehicle. Draw Tite does not feel their # 36538 needs the strap so they do not require them....

The Draw-Tite Class II hitch, part # 36538 does indeed make use of existing holes, but the hole used for the forward-most attachment point will need to be enlarged with a 1/2 inch drill bit. The exhaust does not need to be dropped, but one of the exhaust hanger bolts is replaced with a longer bolt. If you will be towing with your XTS, I would recommend a ball mount like # C45503. I recommend the Draw-Tite # 36538 trailer hitch for two reasons. First, the Curt hitch # C12115 requires trimming of the underbody trim panel. And second, the Curt hitch requires the use of a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 when using the hitch for any non-trailer items like bike racks and cargo carriers. Both trailer hitches are visible, but the Curt hitch may be a little less visible because of the underbody trimming. The # 36538 hitch requires no drilling for installation. This...

  • Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for 2018 Cadillac XTS
We have not had the opportunity to test fit the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36762 on a 2018 Cadillac XTS and while sometimes the installation manual shows this, since this hitch fits this car as well as some models of Chevy Impala, there is not a photo in the manual either. I did a cut out from the linked installation instructions which show how the hitch will sit compared to the rear fascia, which should at least help give you an idea of how it will look. This is a Class II hitch with...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Buick Lacrosse CXL and CXS
Actually both the Draw Tite Hitch # 36538 and the Hidden Hitch part # 90242 (no longer available) that you referenced are made by the same company so they are basically identical. Either would work great for you. The Harmar AL160 is a scooter carrier, if the one you are looking at is confirmed to fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch it should work with either hitch previously mentioned. The weight of the carrier plus your scooter could not exceed 300 lbs otherwise it would be too heavy for either hitch.

  • How Hard is it to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Cadillac XTS
The installation difficulty for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36538 for a 2013 Cadillac XTS is listed as a 5 out of 10. The scale is based on estimated time to install the hitch with each tick on the scale representing 10 minutes. So at a 5 it would take a professional approximately 50 minutes to perform the installation. We usually estimate a novice will take twice as long so that would be 1 hour and 40 minutes. If you plan on doing some towing the recommended ball mount is # 36061 and...

  • Compatibility of Draw-Tite Hitch 36538 & Swagman Semi Bike Rack S64686 on 2016 Chevrolet Impala LTZ
The Draw-Tite Class II hitch # 36538 is a confirmed fit on your 2016 Chevy Impala LTZ and offers no-drill installation as shown in the linked video. The Swagman Semi 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack # S64686 is perfectly compatible and will provide a good fit at the back of the Impala even when it is folded up in its storage position.

  • Best Way to Carry Bikes with a 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT
Yes, you are correct your 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT will need a Class II 1-1/4 trailer hitch such as the Draw-Tite Class II Hitch Receiver # 36538. I recommend the Draw-Tite over the Curt, because Curt requires the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap # 18050 to be used with any non-trailer loads. This is within the guidelines of their warranty. I included an installation video on a 2015 Impala which will be similar to yours. In order to carry your 2 inch bike rack with this hitch you...

  • Comparing Curt and Draw Tite Trailer Hitch for 2017 Buick Regal
The best trailer hitch option we have is the Draw Tite part # 36538 for your 2017 Buick Regal. I recommend this hitch over the Curt # C12115 because it does not require a stabilizer strap like the Curt does when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2014 Chevy Malibu 2LT
For your 2014 Chevy Malibu 2LT I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36538. This is a Class II bike rack with a 1-1/4 inch receiver so it can handle 2 bikes on a rack, no problem. For a bike rack a popular option is the Swagman XTC-2 2-Bike Platform Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches Item # S64670. This is a platform style rack so it is compatible with many bike styles and the first bike will be fairly close to the vehicle when loaded. I have linked a video review of this rack for you.

Yes, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36538 is a confirmed fit for a 2014 Buick Regal Turbo AWD. The install video attached for you is actually on a Buick Regal Turbo. As you can see, the process does not require any drilling because it is a custom fit.

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2015 Chevy Malibu
Since beach cruisers can be on the heavier side of the bike rack spectrum the best setup I can recommend for your 2015 Chevy Malibu would be to go with a hitch mounted solution since that wouldn't put any contact with your vehicle. For a hitch you would want the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36538 as it has been confirmed as a fit for your vehicle. The Swagman XTC2, part # S64670 is one of the most popular racks because it's so easy to use, and because the rack has an angled shank that...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2013 Chevy Malibu with Dual Exhaust
The Draw Tite hitch part # 36538 has been confirmed to fit your 2013 Chevy Malibu that has dual exhaust so I would recommend it for you. The Curt hitches for this vehicle used to not come with the correct brackets for the mid-year change on the vehicle, but this model works just fine. I attached an install video that shows it being installed on a vehicle with dual exhaust as well.

  • Would a Hitch Extender Be Needed to Carry a Harmar Scooter on a 2011 Buick Lacrosse
The problem with hitch extenders is that they reduce the capacity of the hitch they are installed on by 50 percent. The Draw-Tite part # 36538 that you referenced has a tongue weight capacity of 300 lbs, so if you were to use an extender you would now be limited to 150 lbs of tongue weight. When installed the hitch opening should be recessed behind your bumper about 4 inches, so most likely the carrier you have would not require more clearance, but you can measure it from the center...
