Good quality. Hitch feels very sturdy. Install time is accurate for new cars. However, my 2014 had a few winters under its belt and it took a couple hours to get the dirt & rust out from the nuts in the frame. Air tools helped significantly. 563664

I installed mine by myself this weekend. When I took the hitch receiver out of the box, I was surprised at how hefty it was. This thing is NOT lightweight. Without a second pair of hands, I wasn't sure how I'd get it done. But then I lifted up the passenger side and suspended it from the exhaust bracket with a heavy duty zip tie. Then I put one bolt in the drivers side. Then I returned to the passenger side and cut the zip tie and put those two bolts in. Then I returned to the driver's side and put the remaining bolt in. Then I went back and forth and finger tightened all the bolts. Then I lightly tightened with a wrench followed by my first attempt using a torque wrench. I only wish I knew how to properly use a clicking torque wrench, because I never heard the click and I turned very hard. I'm still not sure if I tightened enough or if I possibly over-tightened. But in any case, it's obvious that this is a solid hitch receiver. Oh, one more thing. I couldn't budge the bolts holding on the tie-down bracket. Luckily I have an air impact driver that I rarely use. That took the tie-down bracket bolts off easily. The other weld nut holes that were needed were all covered with stickers, so no wire-brush cleaning was needed. 188518

2015 Toyota RAV4

This was a super easy install. The hitch was well packaged and arrived within 3 days of ordering. Installation took less than 15 min for the hitch itself on my 2009 Toyota RAV4. Other reviewers have noted some issue with holes aligning to the bolt holes in the vehicle frame; I had no problems at all with alignment, and didn't even have to remove the muffler hanger to get all the bolts installed and torqued. I simply left all bolts loose until I had all four started in their holes, and the hitch went into place with no problems. The wiring harness took a bit more time. Although it was not complicated, the need to remove various trim pieces to reach everything took some time. Also, if you have an all wheel drive RAV like I do, running the main power wire to the front of the vehicle on the outside of the body is problematic. Getting around the back axle and differential is difficult as there are not a lot of good places to runt eh wire forward without getting into the suspension NAND drivetrain. I ended up routing the wire along the left side under the door sill trim (there are wire loops already conveniently located there to hold rear electrical system wiring harness); the hardest part of that process was fishing the wire over the rear wheel well, and finding a suitable way to get the power wire fed through the firewall. A four foot piece of stiff wire proved the key to success, as I was able to poke the end through the wire grommet on upper left corner of the firewall, duct tape the end of the power wire to it, and then pull the whole thing back through into the engine compartment. The harness itself fit perfectly and the instructions were sufficient to keep me going in the right direction. Overall, I was pleased with the speedy customer service, fit and finish of the products I received, and the ease of installation. I would recommend this product and company without reservation. 139028

A year later, I am very happy with this hitch. Just finished a 3000 mile move from east to west coast, towing a utility trailer loaded with two motorcycles. The car handled it with no problems, and the hitch performed flawlessly. Wiring harness works just lie it is designed to do only issue I have noted was that the little adhesive strip that holds the wiring hRness block to the fender came unstuck at one point. I just stuck it back on the fender well and it has stayed in place since then. All in all, cry happy with this purchase.

The hitch looks well built and will definitely do what I need it to do. Mostly to plug in our four bike rack. I have installed a few of these and we saved a lot of money by installing it myself. The on line video and provided instructions are very helpful and assured me that I could install it. The only problem I had was the bolt holes didn’t line up. The frame of the car is 1/2” wider, center to center , than the hitch. But with the help of my tapered spud wrench, I was able to flex it over to line up and get the bolts in. It’s all ok now and we’re ready to use it. 562548

Great product. Have it for over a year. I use it regular for my bike rack and pop up camper. Awesome. Fits perfectly however you have to hammer it a little because one of the holes is a little off.... if you do it yourself. Maybe it's just product defect but nothing major or of concern. No issues, no noise. Secured. 596009

When I opened the shipping box, I saw that the receiver had broken free from cardboard that was stapled to the inside of the box to keep the contents in position. There was no damage, however, and everything was there. Backed my vehicle, a new 2015 RAV4, up onto a pair of ramps so as to provide a bit more room to work with the creeper. Had to remove a plastic dust cover on the driver's side, and then removed the hold-down bracket. Lifted the passenger side of the receiver up as close to the frame as possible and secured it temporarily with a piece of wire. Went to the driver's side and lifted so as to get a bolt started on that side. Then returned to passenger side to get a bolt started. Detached the tail pipe from the hanger to give access for my socket wrench. I didn't hurry, but got the job done in less than 45 minutes. I didn't think that was too bad. A helper would have made the job go quicker, and access to a lift would have sped it up even more. 201383

2015 Toyota RAV4

Installed very easily on a 2015 Toyota RAV4. There was a driver's side plastic underbody panel that had to be removed and trimmed, but that was straightforward. Lowering the exhaust was tough only because the rubber secure was very tight. After mounting, I noticed that the hitch is slightly crooked, noticeable with a bike rack mounted. I could address this by removing the hitch, bending the braces out a bit, then remounting and adjusting for alignment, but it's not that big of a deal. Working with eTrailer was a pleasure, as the first hitch was badly bent and they sent out a replacement with no hesitation. 181564

My buddy took off the panel while I was working on lowering the exhaust, so Im not sure exactly what he did. As I recall there were two clips and one screw. The screw simply backed out but the clips took some finagling to get off. Plus, you dont want to break them, but I believe you can get replacement clips from Autozone or similar. Good luck.

Toyota RAV4

I had a 6 month new, Toyota RAV4 when I purchased and installed receiver and wiring. Being a new vehicle, the mechanical installation was clean and easy. The instructions were clear, the bolts I had to remove came right out with no issue. The wiring was generally straight forward but the instructions provided are completely inadequate. Fortunately, there is a lot of instruction on the install videos. Even with that, it was hard to imagine ripping an almost new vehicle’s interior apart. The actual process of connecting the wiring kit into the car’s wiring was pretty straight forward, it was getting at the wires that was not explained well. The video made that clear and the procedure was actually rather easy. Just hard to imagine without a video example. I live in the upper Midwest and winters are cold, snowy and a salty environment for a vehicle’s undercarriage. All the recommendations on the web routed the power wire under the vehicle long the frame. I should note, in a the old days, brake lights did not need to be separately powered but instead used the tail light signals to power the trailer lights. There are a handful of reasons why this has changed and the contemporary systems are a lot more technically complicated than those of the past. The new systems have the disadvantage of needing a separate power and ground (frame) connection (the power wire to the battery at the engine compartment). These new systems have the advantage, however, of reliability. Once the back portion of the interior was pulled apart (it all went together quite easily with no problems) finding a path for the wiring to the front of the cabin was quite easily done. Much better and easier than routing via the outside. The only challenge was finding a path through the firewall for the wire to reach the engine compartment and the battery. This was done by using an existing hole near the accelerator (gas) pedal. In the end, the installation went well and works great at a great price with great support. Details of the wiring install needs to be mbetter documented and I would absolutely NOT run the power wire to the battery, outside the vehicle. Running it inside is much easier and far more secure, even in a warm climate environment. It just needs better explanation. The only other “thing” was that the trailer wire hides in the spare tire ompartment when not used (most of the time) and is easily pulled out and reaches the trailer connection through the gasket seal on the closed hatch. While this might seem a bit “crude,” has actually turned out to be a pretty good method. The connector sits dry and safe when not in use and is easily routed throw the closed hatch, without any stress or damage to the wire or hatch seal, to the trailer. 562796

Bought this for my son's 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE AWD Hybrid, and now for my 2018 Toyota RAV4 SE AWD Hybrid. Both installations were a breeze. Have yet to determine whether the Tekonsha T-One wiring harness is similarly easy. 562934

The wiring harness worked flawlessly, especially with the hybrid battery being in the back end. Prying the trim out of the way and releasing the wiring clips, however, was a pain. Far harder than the video makes it look. Two people - one to hold the trim out, and one to manipulate the plugs - works far better. The overall setup is great for both my son and me.

2013 Subaru Outback Wagon

Overall I am very happy with the Curt receiver that I installed. I had purchased and installed a receiver from etrailer.com previously for a subaru outback and decided to do it again it with 2013 Toyota Rav 4 XLE. The installation was not exactly a snap, because the oblong holes on the receiver were about 1/32"-1/16" too far apart (side-to-side). As such, it was very difficult to thread the second set of bolts on. Eventually I got it by dropping the first set down nearly all the way which allowed me to just barely get the bolts on. then I sent them in with the wrench. Total time was 45 minutes. If it weren't for tat issue, I would have given 5 stars. The receiver does NOT affect ground clearance, and does NOT protrude beyond the bumper cover. The instructions were spot on, and the installation video (which they didn't used to have on the website) was even better. 105382

I recently installed the Curt 2" trailer on my 2013 Rav4 XLE awd. The quality and shipping was OUTSTANDING. Shipping was quick, took about 4 business days "thank you Christopher N." Installation was about 30 min's "one person installation" using a jack:) The hitch is pretty solid and will more than do the job for my usage of holding Mountain/bmx bikes. ETrailer made this transaction really easy. Will definitely be my go to auto trailer supply shop. Thank you thank you. 129634

2018 Toyota RAV4

Let me start off by saying the product itself is great. You can tell that the quality and fit and finish are spot on. I have no doubt that this hitch will handle anything my 2018 rav4 can throw at it. That being said the reason I gave it 4 stars has nothing to do with the quality of the product but rather the installation itself. I am very much a do it yourselfer and after watching the installation videos available at etrailer and reading the reviews I was very confident that installation would be a breeze. The hitch showed up quickly and upon inspection everything appeared to be in order so I set out to install it. After lowering the exhaust and unbolting the tiedown bracket I maneuvered the hitch into place and started the two bolts on the drivers side so that one side of the hitch would be loosely supported. So far so good. I then maneuvered into position to thread the remaining two bolts (I am doing this by myself and without jacks) and it immediately became clear that the holes in the hitch were not lined up correctly. The bracket appeared to be too narrow and try as I might i simply could not get the other two bolts in. After better than an hour of pushing and prodding I decided that it was simply not going to work and I would have to return the hitch. In the process of looking up how to return the hitch I stumbled across another review of someone that had the same problem I had. The review had a response from etrailer with a link to a page that explained the metal on brackets, despite being quite thick, are actually pliable allowing the hitch to flex with the car. It also gave a number of suggestions on how one can go about tweaking the hitch to make it fit if the bolt holes didn't line up. After reviewing the information I went back outside, placed the mounting bracket in the crux of a tree and applied light pressure to the other end of the hitch. It bent easily. I then flipped the hitch over and did the same thing to the other side and fifteen minutes later the hitch was installed. I think it would be well worth etrailers time to make a video on what to do if your hitch doesn't fit and put it with their install videos or at least make the information on what to do if the holes don't line up easier to find for those that run into the same problem I had. 544387

This hitch installation was pretty straight forward. etrailer offers video instructions on how to install and that makes the process a lot easier than using the supplied paper instructions. The only issues I had during installation were my installayion holes were filthy so I had to give those a good scrub before the nuts would fit. After cleaning they went in as expected. The hitch is fairly heavy so a 2 person install would make it so much easier, but me, my knee, and thigh got it done alone. So one person is more difficult but definitely do able. You've just gotta be creative. Lastly, customer service was great and Greg was patient and helpful. Thank you! 871111

Sometimes hitches can get slightly bent during shipping and this can be fixed by bending the hitch back into place as long as the hitch only has a slight bend to it. If yours isn't lining up I can almost guarantee that is what happened. Some people will use open steps for leverage, vices and even car jacks to apply controlled force to bend the hitch back. You will want to look for flaking paint and physical stress marks on the hitch before and after you attempt to bend the hitch back....

  • Do Tow Hooks of 2016 Toyota RAV4 Need to be Removed to Install Curt Trailer Hitch
The tie down bracket/tow hook on your 2016 Toyota RAV4 would have to get removed to install the Curt hitch part # C13149 that you referenced. The upside is that the hitch has safety chain loops below the hitch opening which you can use instead.

  • Does 2018 Toyota RAV4 Have Tongue Weight Capacity For Dirt Bike Carrier
I took a look at the online copy of the owner's manual for a 2018 Toyota RAV4 and it did not list a maximum tongue weight capacity. The tongue weight is meant to be around 10 percent to 15 percent when towing a trailer, like you said, but our only source for capacities is the owner's manual, and this one does not specify a hard limit. Realistically, you should probably be fine using a 2 inch hitch like the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13149 - a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver and 525 lb...

  • Will the Kuat NV 2.0 Clear the Spare Tire on a 2012 Toyota RAV4
Yes, for a trailer hitch that is a confirmed fit for your 2012 Toyota RAV4 and will allow for clearance between the Kuat NV 2.0 like part # NV22G and spare tire while folded up you are going to want to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13149. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of the spare tire with this hitch is 5-1/2" and the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the Kuat NV 2.0 while folded up is 7". Therefore,...

  • Torque Specs for the Curt Hitch part # C13149
If you check out the installation instructions I attached to the right for the Curt Hitch part # C13149 you will see that in step 5 the torque specs are listed. Since manufacturers can change torque figures for their vehicles we can't list the torque specs on our site. We link our instructions links from our manufacturers so if the torque specs do change so will our instructions.

  • Hitch Availability and Installation Difficulty for 2014 Toyota RAV4 LE Version
Your 2014 Toyota RAV4 LE can be equipped with either a 1-1/4-inch Class II or a heavier-duty 2-inch Class III hitch. All options can be seen on the link provided. I recommend a 2-inch Class III hitch like the Curt # C13149 for its higher capacity (and safety margin) and for its generally better compatibility with a broad range of hitch-mount accessories like bike and cargo carriers. Hitch installation requires mostly basic mechanical skills and hand tools. The only specialized tool needed...

  • What is the purpose of the Tow Hook on a 2013 Toyota RAV4
The tie down bracket that gets removed from your 2013 Toyota RAV4 is there because that is one place they secure the vehicle while it is in transit on a car hauler from the factory to the dealer. It does not really serve any other purpose and if a tie down point was needed the hitch could be used instead. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation of this hitch as well as a link to the instructions both to the right. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend...

  • Why Was Curt Trailer Hitch # 13509 Discontinued and What is the Replacement for 2009 Toyota Rav4
The Curt Trailer Hitch 13509 that you referenced was discontinued and replaced with the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13149. The change was made to include 2013 vehicles. This hitch now is tested to fit 2006 - 2013 vehicles which includes your 2009 Toyota Rav4. If you are looking to tow with your vehicle, I recommend checking out the Curt Custom Wiring # C56165 and also the Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which includes 2 ball mounts, a 1-7/8 inch ball, a 2 inch ball, pin and clip and carrying bag. I...

  • Recommended 2 Inch Trailer Hitch for 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
There are a few trailer hitch options for the 2017 Toyota Rav4. All the available systems are confirmed to fit the Hybrid models as well. I recommend the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C13149 because installation of this hitch does not require trimming or removal of your vehicle's underbody panel. This is a 2 inch receiver opening with a 525 lb tongue weight capacity that is custom fit for your RAV4 Hybrid, eliminating the need for drilling. Always check the tongue weight...

  • Plastic Under Body Panel Removal to Install Curt Class III C13149 Hitch on 2016 Toyota RAV4
The plastic cover you refer to can be removed and left off, or it can be trimmed and reinstalled as shown in the installation instructions I've linked for you. If you'll be using the hitch for towing purposes, you'll need the following to complete your towing system: Trailer wiring harness, part # 118578 Ball mount # 2923 1-7/8 inch trailer ball # 19260 or 2 inch ball # 63845 Hitch pin, part # PC3 Locking hitch pin # e98882

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Tongue Weight of 170 lbs Tongue Weight
The Curt hitch part # C13149 that you referenced is rated for use with weight distribution systems. That means you could use the Reese Steadi Flex weight distribution system part # 66557 with it and it would work well. Since you have a tongue weight of 170 lb this system would be rated too high since it has a range of 250-400 lbs. Best solution would then be the Equalizer part # EQ37040ET which has a tongue weight range of up to 400 lbs. Many refer to the Equalizer systems as the...
