Note: This bike carrier is not intended for use on spare tires mounted on trailers.
Tired of your vehicle's rear-mounted spare tire preventing you from using most trunk- and hitch-mounted bicycle carriers? No more worries. The SR1 bike rack mounts to your spare and lets you transport up to two bikes on the back of your vehicle.
SR1 Installation
This easy-to-use rack fits spare tires up to 15 inches wide and with any bolt pattern. Simply loosen the adjustment bolts to widen the mounting brace to fit your spare, place the brace over the spare, and tighten the bolts until the rack is snug. Then wrap the side strap under the bottom of the tire and the two front straps around the back of the tire to minimize side-to-side and front-to-back movement of the rack.
Pivoting Arms
Dual, pivoting arms support your bikes and better accommodate women's, children's and alternative frames. (An adapter bar [HRBA-PRO - sold separately] may still be required.) The spring-loaded arms can be folded in when you're not using the rack.
Adjustable Support Bar for Offset Spares
If you have an offset spare tire, the support bar on which the arms are mounted can be installed 4-1/2" to the left or 4-1/2" to the right side of the rack base. This centers your bikes on your vehicle, keeping them from hanging out to the side.
Soft Cradles
Soft rubber cradles with straps firmly grip your bike's frame. The cradles rotate and slide along the arms, so you can easily adjust them based on the type and number of bikes you're transporting. And you can use the integrated safety strap to help keep your bikes tied down.
A cable lock (sold separately) are recommended to deter theft of the rack and your bikes.

Pair your door-mounted spare tire with the SR1 to transport 1 or 2 bikes. Sturdy rack adjusts to center bikes on vehicles with offset spares. The mounting brace clamps around tires up to 15" wide, and 3 straps secure rack to tire.Solid rack. Easy to attach. Bikes mount fairly close to one another. Best suited for bikes with straight top tube, mtb frames can be mounted at an angle. I needed to loosen spare to mount or unmount rack.
When I purchased this rack it specifically said it would fit on a FJ Cruiser factory equipment tire. The rack does accommodate the width but not the height (P265/70R17) so the (U) section of the rack is not long enough to come in contact with the lower part of the tire. This makes the rack unexceptional the carry bikes on the tire do to the lack of support! The rack itself is well constructed and would be excellent on a smaller tire. I modified this rack so it would contact the tire in two places, this works great and just returned from a 4,000 mile trip and could not be happier. Easy to put on, rock solid ride, though my bike frames are small tube and I used a small piece of split garden hose to take the slop out of the rubber frame cradles.
As an owner of a Toyota FJ Cruiser(w/a backup camera) I've been looking for a spare tire Bike rack for my Mt. Bike. This rack worked very well, it fit over the tire(265/70 r17)nicely & all the straps fit correctly & securly. There was no movement of the rack or the bike on the dirt roads I was travelling. I did need to add a cross bar(see above review) to keep the down U off the tire rim & because I have a full suspension bike it was positioned weird. Bottom line, very nice rack kept everything secure. Quite pleased & great price also!!
Awesome product. It is easy to load/unload bikes from the rack. The bikes are very stable throughout the trip -- even over rough terrain. Never had to worry about the falling off. The rack also looks nice on the Wrangler when folded up.
First impressions - mounted on a 2014 Toyota FJ with 285/70-17 tires.
Pros-
-Very compact, when folded.
-With one 29 lbs MTB, it seems very sturdy and stable when properly mounted.
-Allows for use of my backup camera. Even with my one bike mounted, the camera works pretty well. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on your bike(s),
Cons -
- Quite a bit heavier than I thought it would be.
- Took longer to mount correctly on the FJ than I anticipated. Subsequent mounts and removals should go smoother. Instructions were pretty much worthless. I thought it was going to be a no brainer, but.... The concept was easy to grasp, but the implementation a little less so.
- While there are loooong straps hanging all over the place, I’d plan on having some nice Velcro straps to conveniently secure things.
- It handled the width of my 285/70-17 tires, however it does not fit perfectly for taller tires on 17” wheels. The lower “U” frame section, that should rest at the bottom of the tire and provide stability, is too short. Therefore, it is free to move around. Besides the stability issue, this lower portion of the rack may bang against the rim. Can’t be good for those nice rims. Fortunately, this should be an easy fix. At the very least, pad the bottom portion of the frame to spare the wheel. As a temporary fix, I used a section of foam pipe insulation (photo attached). I plan to attach a lower cross bar, with a couple of U-clamps, that will span to the tire (concept photo attached).
The $64k question for me is, why doesn’t Hollywood Racks offer a longer version of this rack for taller tires. In the absence of that, they could supply a simple cross bar adaptor. Considering my limited experience with this rack, I have given it 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars, but I don’t think the system is complete without a packaged solution to the tire issue. Shouldn’t expect the customer to MacGyver solutions to finish off a product.
view when not in use. With the extension bar the bike fits securely and comfortably on the arms. The extra straps completely secure the frame so it doesn’t wobble on the road and evenly distributes the weight so there is hardly any pressure on the head tube and seat post. I highly recommend this rack for a hassle free strong and sturdy mountain bike rack that will protect your high performance trail bike with confidence.
Seems great! Strong & secure. etrailer sent the item in no time! Set up was fairly easy for me, although there were moments I could have used an extra set of helping hands. Nevertheless I did it myself. I'm excited to have the freedom to ride my bike on trails that I would normally not be able to access!
Seems to be made well. A bit of a chore to mount on tire but it does allow the backup camera to be used, which is why I purchased it.
Packaged very well; installation was easy (my bf said); took the bikes out today for a ride. I’d recommend this bike rack for the 2018 Jeep JL Sport S. I’d happy with it!
Etrailer shipped my order extremely fast and the product arrived in perfect condition. This spare tire bike rack is exactly what I needed.
Great products. Well made and fully assembled. Good communication and products arrived very quickly. Appreciated all the information on the website. It gave me the confidence that it would fit my vehicle.
I mounted the bike rack on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL with back up camera with no issue. There is a tight clearance between the spare tire, and 3rd brake light but I was able to install it with the tire cover in tact. Going forward will probably put small spacers on the back of the tire mount for an extra fraction of inch clearance.
Also, the adapter was needed to level out the women bike on the rack.
Needed bike rack for my 82 Jeep CJ7. Had it mounted in 15 minutes. Fits great and is secured tightly to the spare tire. Appears to be very sturdy construction. Haven't tried it out yet, but have no doubt it is just what I was looking for.
Less expensive than some and easier to install on a Toyota RAV4 than some. Works great and like the fact that it can just stay on, and we can still open the door and use the rear wiper.
I love this rack! I bought it to transport my son's bike to College and it worked great. It only took about 10 minutes to mount on the back tire and was easy to secure the bike. I drove over 500 miles and hardly knew the bike was back there. I really liked the ability to still use the back door without having to remove the bike or rack!
I also have to compliment the customer service from eTrailer...fantastic!
I used to have a trailer hitch bike rack on a Toyota RAV4. It worked well but was difficult and messy to swing out of the way to open the door and put groceries in the back.
The Toyota died and I got a similar Honda CRV. I knew the downside of the trailer hitch so I got a roof rack bike mount. It looked awesome but was VERY difficult to get bikes on after a long ride and in the wind on non-level ground. I had to carry a step stool with me. I still scraped up the side of my car. The final disaster was I forgot the bike was still on top and backed into my covered car port. DOH!
So I looked into tire rack mounts. Both Honda and Toyota mount the spare tire off-center. Some of the brands cannot adjust for this and your bike sticks out a couple of feet on the passenger side. Some brands must be mounted to the spare tire itself and cannot have a tire cover.
The SR1 rack below has held up great the last year. It was a fraction of the price of the big name bike carriers. I leave it on 24/7/365 and take it through the car wash with no issues. I live in the sunny SW and it has survived the sun and heat. It has not slipped at all when put over the vinyl tire cover.
The only issue is you do need to supply a short bungee cord to keep the arms retracted when folded back and not in use.
fit great... easy install
got it much faster than we though due to a helpful expiditor than recommended a "same as" choice on my order to get it much quicker.
Thanks
The rack is sturdy and solid, works as advertised. Workmanship is adequate, though the attachment to the wheel is a bit DIY in appearance. Installation is OK, need to get used to routing and securing the three attachment straps and check while in use to ensure they have not loosened. This is the only rack I found that permits use on an off-center spare wheel like my Honda CR-V 1990s era
I received my bike rack in very fast time only took a few days I was pleasantly surprised! The product its self is very nice well made and looks and works great! Only negative comment I have is instructions and pics when it came to the tie down straps weren't very easy to understand.I fumbled through it still not sure if I have it the way its supposed to be but seems fine. I also had to drill other holes to get rack centered on my 1995 tracker because factory spare isn't centered just offset a little which by using holes in rack from factory wouldn't work! Other then that very happy with it!
Installed it this morning and the product seems fine. It hugs the wheel nice and solid and seems sturdy enough to last until the straps give out.
I am taking a star off for the lack of effective instructions. This isn’t a crippling complaint as the rack mount is fairly easy to figure out, but it would have made it easier if a step by step diagram was included.
As to specific issues, there are 4 sets of straps included, but only one is shown in the completed picture. You’re left to your own devices to work out what the others are for.
My other complaint concerns the folding arms that hold the bikes. If order to place the arms into the notch (working position), you have to push a spring loaded bolt up from below. This is not intuitive. The arms look like you should be able to turn them so they climb over the ridge and snap into place. Unfortunately, they don’t work that way and I bent one of the arms before figuring that out. Would have been nice if that was in the instructions, but it’s not.
After one year of ownership, It has been on many bike rides and never has moved around. I keep this permanently mounted to my spare tire. It's not easy to get on our off and since that tire is only for emergencies I keep it on there full time. There has been no damage to the tire over the year. One of my favorite parts is how little the rack sticks out. About 4 inches or less when it is not in use. When ready to use it is very simple and can be done with gloves on as well. Ease of use and low profile give this bike rack high marks from me.
Easy to set up, but my bike hangs a little low when installed on the spare tire of by RPod trailer.
Great rack worth the price. Good constant easy to use.
I purchased to use with a JL Wrangler. Because of back-up camera there are few options for a tire mount carrier. A pain to put on and take off the spare tire as you have to back-out the spare tire nuts and pull the tire away from the brake light and then tighten the spare tire nuts. Once I developed my installation routine, takes me about 20-25 minutes to install, a lot less to take off. Once installed, works fine.
The unit arrived on schedule and as advertised. Installation instructions were easy to read and to follow. Have already hauled the bikes on it.
Very pleased both with the product and your service.
Spare tire carriers on trailers usually have a lesser load rating that spare tire carriers on vehicles. The Hollywood racks spare tire carrier should only be used on vehicle mounted spares. We do have a number of bike carriers that are approved for RV/Trailer use, including some around-the-spare racks. I've added a link to all of these racks.
