Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon - Curt

Today in our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon, we will be installing the current hitch, part number C12270. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we will go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you to choose some accessories for your hitch; such as ball mount, a bicycle rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin whole to outer most edge of the bumper, is approximately 5-3/4". From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground, is approximately 14-3/4". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now we're going to need to go ahead and lower this carbon canister down here on the passenger side.

To do this there are three nuts that will need to be removed to get the main body of the carbon canister out of the way; two at the rear of the vehicle and one in the center, on the front of the canister. With this lowered out of the way, we will need to remove two more bolts that hold the bracket to the frame of the vehicle. Now with the carbon canister lowered down out of the way, we will need to go ahead and lower the rear most exhaust hanger, so we can slide the exhaust over to give us a little extra room. To do this we use some spray lubricant, and in this case we went ahead and used a large pry bar. Or a large flat head screwdriver will work as well. Now with the rubber exhaust hanger removed, we'll go ahead and point out the locations that we will be mounting our hitch. We will be using both of the tow hooks, one on each side.

As well as we will need to remove to two rubber plugs where our carriage bolt and spacer block will be reversed fishwired up into them. Now for the two forward locations, one on each side, we use carriage bolt, a spacer block, and a flange nut. For the two rear locations, you will have a hex bolt, a spacer block that goes on either side of the tow hook, followed by a flange nut, as shown here. Now we will go ahead and reverse fishwire our hardware into position. To do this, youll slide the spacer block onto the fishwire, and then thread the carriage bolt onto that. You will push the carriage bolt up into the hole, followed by the spacer block, and then pull back down.

We will go ahead and repeat this process for both sides. Now we're ready to go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us raise the hitch up into place. On the driver's side, you need to make sure that the hitch goes to the outside of the tow hook, while for the passenger side, you'll make sure the hitch goes on the inside of the tow hook. With the hitch raised up into place, we go ahead and place the hex flange nut on the two forward locations. Now that the hitch has been supported, we can go ahead and put the rear hardware for each location. The two small spacer blocks on either side of the tow hook, and the hex flange nut. Now for the driver's side, again take the hex bolt, go from the inside of the vehicle towards the outside, and on this side we will go through the hitch first, then the spacer block, then the tow hook, then another spacer block, and then the hex flange nut.

Now that we have all the hardware in place, we can go ahead and tighten it down, and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Once that's done, we can go ahead and put our carbon canister back up into place by putting the two bolts that hold the bracket up first, followed by the three nuts that hold actual canister in place. And finally we can go ahead put our exhaust hanger that we removed earlier back up as well. And with that, that will conclude the installation of the current hitch, part number C12270 on our 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon. .

I was pretty confident in my ability to install my new hitch even before I started shopping. Once I found etrailer.com and checked out the install videos my confidence was certainly increased. The hitch and wiring harness were packed well, very securely, and delivered on time. In fact, after placing my order I was emailed to say that it was able to be expedited so it would arrive on Friday rather than Monday. Score 1 for etrailer.com. Set out Saturday morning to install and literally EVERYTHING went exactly as the video and instructions said they would and I managed to get it done in just under 45 minutes with very basic hand tools. I would definitely do business with etrailer.com again and have already made many recommendations. Thanks!! 23021

An excellent hitch, stronger than hell! and excellently painted. There were minor deviations in the dimensions but who could expect an add-on to exactly fit a 26 year old car? I particularly liked the very clever fishing device to insert the bolts into the box sections of the frame. I think I would raise the difficulty level a bit as I had to use some considerable force using a jack to get the unit to match up to the manufacturer's shipping tie-down loops on the car. I suspect that is not an important dimension in making a car. Overall amazing just to be able to get a hitch that fits so well and great price. 413903

Sure your hitch is working just fine. Absolutely no problems. Still amazed that one can get a hitch to fit on a 27 year old car with only minimal dimensional problems! Cheers

Installed on my 01 Outback in order to use a rear bike rack. Received expedited shipping at no cost. Etrailer had the best price for this which includes everything you need for installation (fishwire) and a drawbar/pin for towing. Tips for installation: 1. Jack the car and place on jack stands. Put on eye protection. 2. Remove carbon canister AND bracket in the right rear corner (looking from the back of the car). You need to remove 3 nuts and 2 bolts using 13 mm and 12 mm sockets. The actual canister and bracket can be left to hang. 3. Fishwire the bolt and spacer into the LARGE hole closest to the tow hooks. 4. Install hitch with BOTH vertical surfaces which bolt on to the tow hooks to the LEFT of them. 5. Thread the nuts to the carriage bolt first, lightly and then thread the nuts to he tow hooks/holes maximally first (don't forget to use a spacer on either side of tow hook). You need a 3/4 socket and use correct torque wrench setting. 6. Torque the carriage bolt nuts down next. 7. Reinstall bracket and canister and unjack. You are done. 58173

2004 Subaru Outback Wagon

First off... I searched for a hitch for my 04 Subaru Outback wagon. I price compare just about everything and the pricing for this hitch is the same as or less than others. Ive purchased other things from etrailer and i never had an issue. What sold me was that this hitch mount had a video about how to mount it. it looked like i could handle it. I also priced compared the receiver, and the wiring kit. this was a no brainer to get everything i needed from etrailer. I ordered it on a Monday night and it was delivered Wed afternoon. You cant beat that. I mounted it up Wed afternoon and it fit perfect. The wiring harness kits instructions were wrong about where to look for the factory plug. It says look for the plug on the rear drivers side....it was on the rear passenger side. no biggee...but there was no place to route the plug/wire. So i drilled a hole located at the spare tire center back and installed grommets and a wire loom for the harness. i had to cut the 4 wires to back feed so i just soldered and taped up the splice. After all is said and done this is the perfect hitch and wiring. I highly recommend anything from the etrailer. 718070

This is an excellent hitch for the Outback. I have towed several moving trailers and a lawnmower trailer regularly. The hitch didnt miss a beat. Also it seems to be resistant to corosion and has generally held up well. Great purchase. 717786

The hitch came with all the parts need to install-including a bolt lead-and the instructions were fairly clear. The construction seems to be very solid, and the price was right. The only thing was in the installation the spread between the two wings that are bolted to the tow hooks under the vehicle is not wide enough. I had to work to get the second nut threaded on the bolt to draw the wing on the passenger's side tight. Another half inch longer bolt or, preferably, another 1 inch length in the spread would have worked wonders. Other than that, the communication with etrailer, shipping speed, and price were great! 642321

1997 Subaru Outback Wagon

I put this on my 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback - it took a little fidgeting and two people definitely make it easier to install... but it works great! I used this to tow a motorcycle trailer with an old Honda CB riding behind. My 20-year-old engine wasn't the happiest about it, but it worked. Very happy, awesome buying experience. 614212

1994 Subaru Legacy

I installed this on my 1994 Subaru Legacy sedan. Seems quite sturdy and it supports my bike rack with no problems. The only issue I ran into is that my car seems to have slightly different spacing on the tow loops in comparison with the other cars this rack is compatible with, but this was solved by purchasing a slightly longer bolt (same spec and strength rating) and a few washers. Because I'm only using this for a bike rack, I'm not particularly worried about it. Overall, this seems to be a quality product that should work well for a long time. 607879

Trailer hitch looks great and was easy to install. Wiring wasn't too bad either. As stated in other reviews you will need a few washers to put in the small gap on the right side tow hook for the hitch to bolt to. Would definitely recommend. 525203

the hitch arrived in good shape. the hitch fit tight between the tow hooks. i had to bend the drivers tow hitch a bit to have the hitch slide into place. bolts are tight, hitch is secure. a little bit of monkeying around, but i got it to work out. 522586
