Question:

Hi, I currently have a 36284 for my 2000 suburu outback wagon, but the distance from the receiver holes to the bumper is too long to work with my rack. Im interested in C12270 as a possible alternative but need to know the distance from the receiver hole to the edge of the bumper. The 36284 is approx. 6.5s - how about the c12270? thanks in advance.

I do have a way that you can determine the clearance with Curt trailer hitch # C12270 installed. Take a look at the instructions I have linked for you. Find the mounting point on the vehicle for the forward most attachment point (towards the front of the vehicle).

Measure from this mounting hole straight back towards the rear of the vehicle 18-1/4 inches. This is where the face of the receiver will be. If you measure from that point to the distance required to clear the rear bumper, you will know the clearance measurement. You can also compare this to your existing trailer hitch.

The 2 hitches have very similar designs and the measurement will not be off by much, if at all. You may want to take a look at some other bike rack options. If you do go with the Curt hitch, you will need to use stabilization strap # 18050 with a bike rack or cargo carrier for their warranty. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch do not require the strap.

If you can tell me how many bikes you want to carry I will be happy to make some recommendations.
