Video Transcript for Review of the Reese Trailer Hitch Starter Ball Mount Kit

Today, we're going to be taking a look at Reese's trailer hitch starter ball mount kit. This ball mount is designed for class two applications. It has a two inch ball on it with a maximum rating of 3,500 pounds for its gross towing capacity. And it also has a 300 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of it. Typically, a trailer loaded up we'll have about 10% of its gross towing capacity as its tongue weight. So if you've got 3,000 pounds in your trailer, you've probably got about 300 pounds on top of your ball as long as you've got it loaded properly.

That's going to be perfect for our small utility trailer here that uses a two inch ball. And it slides on and locks into place. Now, one of the things you can do, we're not going to be doing it for demonstration purposes here, but to help reduce noise and wear on your ball, you can place a little bit of grease on the ball before each use. And you can see here, we've got a nice small utility trailer hooked up, and you can easily use this to haul around some dirt bikes or ATVs or even some jet-skis if you're going to head to the Lake for the weekend. This ball mount offers a one and a quarter inch drop and a three quarter inch rise. You can see we're currently in the rise position, and this is how it comes shipped to you, with the ball pre-installed. And with our vehicle here and our trailer, that's about perfect.

If we follow it back, it's nice and level going down our trailer, which is what you want when you tow. Having your weight excessively up or down is going to cause your load to be improper, which when starting, stopping, and turning is not going to transfer to your vehicle properly, causing it to feel unstable. By giving us the options to match our trailer, we can have the safest, most enjoyable towing experience. Now, if you want to put it in the drop position, you will have to take your ball off, flip it over, and then reinstall it. But one of the cool things that I like about this ball mount that others don't have, and the ball combination here, if you look, you can see grooves cut out in both the top and bottom side of our ball here. And what that does is it keeps our ball from spinning in the ball mount when we're tightening it down.

You can see here where the hex shape is pressed up against those grooves. With a lot of other ones, you don't have that, and so when you're trying to tighten up this nut, the ball just wants to spin in the mount, so you have to usually put it in a vice or something to hold it.But with this, you could actually just leave it in your hitch and loosen it up, flip it over, and then tighten it back down, which is pretty nice. Once you've got your ball moved to the position you want it in, you do want to make sure you tighten it and torque it to the specifications found on the ball mount here. And if you're worried about your trailer coming in close contact with the bumper or any accessories you have here at the front, this ball mount is extended to give you a little bit additional distance between the back of your vehicle and where your trailer attaches. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the center of where our ball is mounted, it's about nine inches, which is considerably longer than your typical ball mounts. And the entire thing is constructed of steel and protected against the elements with a black powder coat finish.

Our ball is also a solid steel with a chrome finish on it to help protect it from corrosion. When you're ready to use your ball mount, you can simply slide it into the receiver and secure it with the included hitch pin and clip. You do want to keep in mind that the sticker does cover up the holes. So we're just going to slide it in, push our pin through, and then secure it with the clip on the other side. And that completes our look at Reese's trailer hitch starter ball mount kit.

Exactly what I needed. All my previous SUVs used 2x2 hitch mounts which now are useless. So I decided to gift them to my son. The hitch mount is well made. etrailer is fast and very easy to find exactly what you need at a fair price. Customer service is friendly and helpful.

I needed an very specific ball mount(class I, 1/2" rise, 2" ball). etrailer had what I needed in stock and available to ship next day. I had the thing ordered in 60 seconds. Wish I wouldn't have waisted my time and gas shopping at my local hardware stores only to find they didnt have what I needed.

The hitch is still doing exactly what I want it to do: I dont have to put any thought into its existence until I want to use it, and then I just have to remember where I put it. I get to spend my mental energy thinking about how to tie down the junk on my trailer and dont have any brain-strain related to the hitch at all.

by:

Purchased this for my John Deere tractor.Shipping was super fast.Came well packaged..No damages what so ever..

by:

  • Can A Class III Ball Mount Be Used On a Class II Hitch
If you're asking whether or not a 2" Reese ball mount can be used with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12115, then the answer is no because this hitch only has an 1 1/4" receiver. Without swapping the hitch out with a 2" hitch you'd have to use a hitch expander like the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD, but using this expander will cut the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50% which would make the hitch pretty much useless. Your best bet is to just use...

  • Trailer Hitch For A 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata
For your 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata, we have the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11435. This is a class I trailer hitch, that has a maximum towing weight of 2,000lbs, and a max tongue weight of 200lbs. If you're needing wiring, we have the Curt T-Connector # C56300. This is an easy to install, plug-and-play harness that will plug into your vehicle's factory wiring harness. Wiring is needed to be able to provide lights to your trailer while driving, that was you're compliant with the law and for safety. Finally,...

  • Hauling Scooter With 1-1/4 Hitch Receiver
We can give you the tools to achieve what you're wanting but your vehicle is limited when it comes to hitch sizes and capacity. Since you only have 1-1/4" hitch options we don't have a lot of towing options for your Challenger X Scooter. We also can't use an adapter for the hitch as it will cut down the capacity too much to where it could not handle the weight of your scooter. Best thing you can do is get a specific trailer for your scooter. If you have a 2005 Ford Focus hatchback or...

  • How to Transport a Trailer with a 2015 Honda CR-V
I do have a way that you could possibly transport your motorcycle with your 2015 Honda CR-V but unfortunately all of the motorcycle carriers are fits for 2" receivers so you will need to use a trailer to move your motorcycle around. It is worth noting as well that the online version of your owner's manual states that the vehicle is only rated to tow 1,500 lbs and that the tongue weight should never exceed 10% of that (which means you have 150 lbs of tongue weight). Even if your 1-1/4" receiver...

The closest ball mount we have to the # RP7043000 that has a 1-7/8 inch ball we have the Euro style Curt ball mounts like part # C45551 which has a 2-3/4 inch rise or the # C45581 which has a 3-1/4 drop.

For a trailer hitch, the Draw-Tite # DT83MR is confirmed to fit on the 2020 Kia Forte as long as it is not the GT model and will provide you with a 1-1/4" receiver. For wiring, I recommend using the # C59496 because it has a powered converter box that will help protect your vehicle from back feed in the event that there is a short on the trailer. • Towing Capacity of 2016 Hyundai Sonata
From what I was able to determine by checking the owner's manual of your 2016 Hyundai Sonata, they do not recommend trailer towing with this vehicle. This doesn't mean you absolutely cannot, but your best bet would be to consult with your local Hyundai dealership to determine what they recommend for your vehicle to make it possible. If you find out from them that you are able to tow a small trailer carrying your Harley, you'll need a hitch, wiring harness and ball mount with hitch ball...
