Purchased for a 2016 Miata to haul two sub-35 pound mountain bikes.
The installation was intimidating on paper, but overall 2/5 difficulty using hand tools on the garage floor. Didn't run into any problems, just took patience and 2 hours. Would recommend having a friend to assist lifting the receiver into position.
I've used the Curt trailer hitch for about a year now, and everything still feels tight. No complaints and I'd recommend this to other Miata owners.
Arrived badly damaged and clear that care was not taken with this product. Even includes dinged hitch entryway and missing paint that will lead to rust.
As always, superior service and superior product keeps us all coming back. No need to look for better, you have it with etrailer.

It’s been a year since install, hitch is holding up very well. I tow a small 8x10 trailer, a cargo tray and I fashioned a swing hammocks seat that the grand kids love. Also a small grille that I attach to the hitch. Probably wasn’t designed for all that, but it certainly holds very well. Well worth the money, and install was a breeze.

OMG this was a sweet install. Superbly engineered and I was done in about 2 hours doing it solo.. Such small visibility and the paint job on it was outstanding, powdered coated? Instructions great, hardware was top notch, torqued the bajesus out of it no fear of snapping, and the bracket to hold the bumper trim was super solid. Could not rate any higher. Added a picture with my bike rack but mainly installed to pull a tag along trailer.

The customer service representatives are very responsive and the trailer hitch was very easy to install, especially following the video. It actually took us longer to drill the holes than to do the rest of the installation. The fish wire was fun to use too.
Hitch installation was straight forward. It’s best to remove the muffler entirely rather than working with it dropped down and hanging. The hitch works perfectly with our 10 cu.ft. Yakima box attached to a DIY aluminum frame that I built attached to a 1.25” steel drawbar. We can now take 2-4 week road trips with ample storage
This hitch went on easily and enables us to pull a small trailer so we can tent camp across the country. Without this hitch, we would have had to stay in motels and only eat in restaurants.
My installation was not for a Miata, but for my 2018 Fiat 124 Spider. The instructions were very clear and also apply to the Fiat. The muffler should be removed rather than just lowered, it makes the installation so much easier. The facia brackets that are included are Miata specific, they will not fit the Fiat. In time I will fashion some myself. The most time consuming part of this project was making the access holes larger, but even that only took about 10 minutes to do both. The clearance of the receiver to the light pod is not an issue for me since I am using this product for a bike rack. Some tips for installation
1. After fishing the carriage bolts into position, do NOT remove the fish wire until you are ready to put on the nut, it's easy to lose the bolt in the frame.
2. Install one side of the receiver at a time, it's heavy and nearly impossible to hold up to the frame to line up all four bolts.
3. Take off that muffler, you'll be glad that you did.
This is a great product, and ready to install. I highly recommend it.
I mounted this hitch on a 2018 Fiat Lusso Spider. The hitch fit perfectly and is almost invisible. It was really easy to remove the muffler to install. I would have given 5 stars except that the Facia support brackets used for the Miata are not the same as what is needed, see picture, for the Spider. I fabricated my own brackets and all is well.

installation went great with a few expected modifications - just WISH you can make it in aluminum for us that don’t require to tow anything. my tanita scale displayed 23.14 lbs
- unless i am missing something? i don’t know why there are 4 fishing wires in the kit since you only use it one.
note:
use a primer to protect the metal after you make the holes bigger on the chasis. (see pics)
Great 1 1/4 hitch. It is exactly what I need for my bike carrier on my 2017 Fiat 124. It's tucked under the number, so when the bike rack is not attached, you can't see it at all, which is nice.

exhaust still came in contact with the hitch and rattled something fierce.
got in touch curt manufacturing who made the hitch foe e trailer and they said it should fit.
it fit kinda ok after i took the car to a muffler shop and had 3/8 of an inch cot off the muffler with a plasma torch.
when they said it would the car e trailer neglected to to tell me that it would be necessary to cut off parts of the exhaust .
no one seemed to be interested in helping me with problem. but because of the price i would most likly buy from them again knowing it may not install as easily as described. Unless i found a better price
Added a hitch on a 2019 Miata RF for a bike carrier on the rear that I can detach. Fit on the Miata is great, instructions were easy to follow, installed it in a single afternoon. Great item.
Hitch was not too difficult to install, but was definitely easier with two people. The instructions say to drop the exhaust, but it is easier if you remove the muffler all together, which is only two extra bolts.
It looks great installed, even with the extra bumper lip on the Club trim level. It sits very close to the bumper and looks very high quality when installed.
Quality product at a reasonable price. Installation idea was excellent and resulted in no need to read and follow written instructions

One year latter and my Curt hitch looks like new and is working just fine. Fiat owners who want to attach bicycle racks, cargo trays, or even small, lightweight tire trailers for autocross rubber will find this to be the best solution. Other hitch designs require removal and replacement of the rear bumper cover. The Curt design requires only the removal of the rear muffler for ease of installation. Im a repeat customer, and theres a reason for that: Curt makes the best product for the cars I drive.
So far so good. Installation was easy with the right tools. Fishwire system for install is super slick, works far better than it looks like it should. Really like the way this attaches to the frame - uses heavy duty hardware in shear (how bolts are designed to be used) and doesn't put bending loads on any frame welds like some of the more expensive options. Also like that it's all one piece instead of hideaway - the hideaway hitches wobble a lot when used with a bike rack or cargo tray.
Highly recommend, and as a bonus, it's cheap!

Haven't yet installed the hitch, But it looks good. It will be barely visable.
I installed this 1-1/4" hitch on my 2019 Mazda Miata RF and it works great for my Kuat Sherpa bike rack (that I also purchased at eTrailer; they have the best prices!). I generally only carry one road bike or one mountain bike on the rack, but it and the hitch seem very sturdy; much thicker metal than the lightweight Miata frame to which it is installed.
I opted to remove the bumper cover and the bumper and install the 4 bolts that way, rather than enlarge the holes in the car's frame with a die grinder or dremel as recommended by the instructions for 2 of the bolts. When you remove the bumper you will have access to the hollow "rails" that comprise the main structure of the car's frame, and it is very easy to put in the bolts into the existing holes without grinding any holes bigger than they were from the Mazda factory. You have to drop the exhaust/muffler to do this install (regardless of which approach you take for the bolts), but it goes back into its original position so nothing to complain about other than the usual rubber exhaust hangers being stiff and hard to remove by hand.
The install took a couple hours but was not very difficult; for some steps you may benefit from a pair of extra hands (like raising/lowering the bumper cover or the hitch itself while you get the first bolts in), but it's possible to do this install on your own in 2-3 hours.
This hitch is custom made to fit the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It was easy to install and looks great with the entire hitch out of sight behind the bumber with only the 1 1/4-inch hitch opening visible. E-Trailer provides non-spin bolts for mounting the hitch to the frame, and four metal fishing wires (one for each bolt) so there's no chance of accidently pushing the bolts up into the frame rails when you raise the hitch into position against the frame rails. Clearance between the hitch and muffler is sufficient to avoid any contact and rattling when driving.
Quick delivery and easy install and it fits perfectly. What more can you ask for!
Installed on a 2015 MX-5 Club Sport (with factory ground effects) and a after-market Good Win Racing muffler. Used some inexpensive car ramps to have easier access underneath. Got some metal cutting bits online to grind the frame holes bigger (the only 'annoying' step) with my electric drill, which was easier than expected. Rest of the installation was a breeze. I found it easier to remove the muffler rather than 'lower it' as the instructions say. Once installed, everything fit factory perfect (someone suggested the Club Sport ground effects may require trimming, that's not true, it doesn't touch anything). Now, the GWR Muffler did 'touch' since it is a little fatter than factory. That was solved by going some longer/adjustable muffler hangers (lowering muffler 1 inch). Took about 30 minutes to install, plus 30 minutes messing with drill and making holes larger, and 15 minutes to remove existing muffler. That's being careful and patient. I'd say this install is a 6/10, not a 10/10. Single person not a problem.
