Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C40036. This is the Curt 2 and 5/16 inch hitch ball. Now, this hitch ball is a little bit different than normal hitch balls, it's going to have a high rise design. That's going to let you easily match the ball to your trailer height. The trailer hitch ball is going to sit 2 extra inches above the ball mount platform on your particular ball mount. Again, it's a nice design, it's a unique design, that really allows you to get the ball where you need it to haul your trailer the way that you want to, or the way that you should. The unit is going to feature a fine threaded system that's going to provide exceptionally tight, strong grip.

Steel construction with a nickel-chrome finish, that's going to do a good job at resisting rust and corrosion and lasting a long time. You are going to get the lock washer and the nut. Those items are included. The ball diameter on the unit, printed right here on top, that's going to be 2 and 5/16 of an inch. That's going to be rated at 10,000 pounds, so that's going to be the capacity. If we take a measurement of the shank length, that's measuring this portion right here, that's going to give us a length of 2 and 5/8 of an inch.

The shank is going to give us a diameter of an inch and 1/4. That's helpful to know depending on the ball mount that you want to install this on. The rise area, so this portion right here, that's going to give us that 2 inch measurement. Then from the bottom of the platform right here to the top of the hitch ball, that's going to give us a measurement that looks to be about 4 and 5/8 of an inch, which is going to give this unit an overall length measurement; looks to be about 7 and 1/4 of an inch. Really simple installation. You need to make sure that the ball mount that you're installing this on has the inch and 1/4 hole.

Slide the shank through the hole on your ball mount platform. On the underside of the platform is going to go the lock washer and the nut and then you'll need to follow the instructions and make sure that you get this torqued down to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. That's going to ensure that everything is tight and that the ball is going to stay onto the ball mount platform and that it's ready for towing. That's going to do it for today's look at part number C40036.

USPS destroyed the package and the items fell out, so I received an empty box.

etrailer took care of it and sent replacements. Awesome service!

Dimensions are correct, photo is not. Photo is not a chromed ball; description is correct, it is chrome. After a couple of trips with a 6K# trailer, chrome is still in good condition, no peeling away (I did grease before attaching.). Nut fits a 1-13/16 wrench.

After a year and several long trips with a heavy trailer, chrome is not peeling and remains in good condition. Note that I use axle grease liberally on trailer balls! Also, I have had no issue with the lock washer and nut provided staying tight.

Got this riser ball as expected. A friend gave me this trailer but my hitch was about two inches to low. This 2" riser ball fixed the problem perfectly. I had a question so called for details on riser height. The lady I spoke with was very helpful told me about economy shipping rates that take a bit longer since I was in no hurry to get this. Overall I really like this company, their descriptions are detailed, they have little videos you can watch that help with making the right choice. They are very helpful on the phone if you need to call and they seem to have good prices as well. I will definitely order from them again. In fact, I plan to call tomorrow to get help deciding on mirrors for my truck.

  • Height of the Curt Hitch Ball # C40036 Above Ball Mount Platform
The height of the Curt High Rise ball # C40036 that you referenced measured from where it would sit on a ball mount platform to the top of the ball measures 4-11/16 inches.

  • Can Curt Ball Mount Part # C45338 be Used with Tow Dolly
Yes, if you had a tow dolly that attaches to a hitch ball the Curt ball mount part # C45338 that you referenced would work well with it. For hitch balls you'd want the part # A-90 for a 2 inch ball or part # C40036 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.

  • Is a 2 inch Rise Ball Mount Needed to Use a Blue Ox Sway Pro on a 6 inch Tall Trailer Frame
I spoke to Blue Ox and they informed me that the dimensions of your trailer frame do not designate whether or not you would need to use a 2 inch rise hitch ball like the part # C40036 that you referenced unless you have the older style of Sway Pro. The new version of the system does not require this. Basically you would just need to set the system up like you would normally so that the trailer sits level. To do that the top of the hitch ball when installed in the head of the Sway Pro will...

  • Availability Of 12" Long Ball Mount With 1-1/4" Hitch Ball Hole And 3" Rise
I have an option that may work for you, but we do not have a ball mount with 4" rise, a 1-1/4" shank hole, and is 13" - 14-1/2" long. The closest option we have is the Draw-Tite Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 3" Rise, 4" Drop - 12" Long - 12,000 lbs # 4285 which is 12" long and has a 3" rise. For this option you would use 2-5/16" hitch ball # BWHB94003 which has a 3-1/4" long shank and has a 1" rise to get you back up to 4" total rise. If your new trailer is under 6000lbs I recommend is...

  • Does Capacity of Ball Mount Change if Used in Rise Position
The towing and tongue weight capacity of the Curt Ball Mount # C45338 does not change if you use it in the rise position; it has a tongue weight capacity of 1,000 lbs and towing capacity of 10,000 lbs no matter if you use it to get 8-1/4 inches of drop or 7 inches of rise. Keep in mind your capacity is limited to that of your truck and hitch receiver. For example, the Curt Trailer Hitch # C14006 for your 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 also has a tongue weight capacity of 1,000 lbs and towing...

  • Difference Between Chrome Plated Steel Hitch Ball and Raw Steel in Terms of Corrosion Resistance
A chrome finish ball # C40036 is going to look good but it will not be corrosion resistant. A ball with a machine finish like # C40087 , is going to have about the same corrosion resistance. In terms of performance they will wear at about the same rate under normal use. The best balls in terms of corrosion are going to be stainless steel

Yes, if you'd like you can use a raised hitch ball with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control - Round Bar - 14K GTW, 1.4K TW # C17063. For that you can use either 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 2" Rise # C40036 or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1" Rise # C40035.

  • Using High Rise Trailer Ball to Achieve No Rise or Drop on Ballmount
When determining the required rise or drop of ball mount needed, there will be many instances where the available ball mounts will not match up exactly with the rise or drop needed. As long as the ball mount used places the trailer within 1-1/2 inches of level, you will be absolutely fine. Having the trailer above level is preferable to under level, as most vehicles will squat or settle a bit once the trailer is hitched to the vehicle. If the Curt # C40036 high rise 2-5/16 trailer ball...

Having a 17-19 inch level trailer coupler height is pretty typical. Without having the boat and trailer at my disposal, I'm at a disadvantage, but I can link you to an FAQ article that shows how to determine the rise or drop you need. Measure from the inside top of the receiver opening to the ground. The height difference between the inside top of the receiver and the underside of the coupler when the trailer is level is the rise or drop you'll need. If the truck receiver height is higher...

  • Availability Of 2-5/6 Hitch Balls With Rise
I have another option for you, but you are correct that all of the 2-5/6" hitch balls with a rise use a shank that is larger than 1". Instead I recommend using the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1" Rise - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-5/8" Long Shank - 10,000 lbs # C40035 or 2" Rise # C40036.
