Video Transcript for Curt Tools - Hitch Tools - C58400 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 1/2 inch fish wire bolt leader. This bolt leader will help easily pull a 1/2 inch size bolts or other hardware through any hard to access holes in your vehicle's frame. This fish wire tool helps install the trailer hitch receiver, fifth wheel rails, goose neck hitch, or any other items. Basically it lets you guide the bolts and the mounting blocks if required through hard to reach holes in your vehicle's closed train. It'll help position the bolt while you're installing the hitch receiver, the goose neck hitch, or the fifth wheel rails on certain applications. This leader is constructed of a spring steel. Again, the application spreads onto a 1/2 inch diameter sized bolt.

Overall length on this leader from end to end is about 20 1/2 inches. When you go to install it, I happen to pull here is a 1/2 inch carriage bolt that would be used on a lot of trailer hitch installations we do here. Here's a spacer block or mounting block that you would be also used on some applications. Basically there's two different methods. The regular fish wire method would be when you run this wire through the two holes.

Once it's through the two holes you can connect it to your bolt and to your mounting block, if you prefer if it's required. Once you thread that all the way on, and you can pull it through the mounting block, and then this is already through the two holes, so you'll get this to fit through the first hole. When you get to the second hole the spacer block or mounting block would be used to hold it in position and to pull the bolt through the hole and then just unscrew the bolt leader from the bolt. This would be in position in the second hole that you wanted it in to be able to attach your hitch or whatever you're installing to your vehicle. The other way is a reverse pull method. What that is is when you take the bolt and mounting block altogether and go ahead and screw this on the bolt leader to the end of it. You do that first and then you run your fish wire through the hole into the frame, and then pull the bolt with the mounting block.

Again, the mounting block would be used to go get at the support in the frame. You pull the bolt through that hole and in the same way just detach the bolt leader from the bolt. You'd be all ready to go again. That should do it for the review on the 1/2 inch fish wire bolt leader.

These fish wires are amazing. If you did not have these you could not install the hitch on our Dodge Dart; there is no other way to fish those bolts and rectangular washers up inside the torque box to the holes they must be inserted through in order to then bolt the hitch in place. They are worth every penny and worked like a dream. 694507

Works great, but don't pull too hard, will bend the coil. For this price, I bought 2 to be safe, but made it through the project using just one. 671846

Very handy when installing the hitch receiver bar to a 2004 Honda Civic 4-door. Once tightened the bolt a bit too tight - had to do some prying to get it off. Nice that the wire was a bit curved, as it guided itself through the out-hole. I also used a magnet to grab the wire end. 599057

I needed this tool to transfer a hitch from my 2005 Focus to my 2003 Focus. Worth the cost to reduce time and frustration. Can't imagine doing this install without this part. I lost the original one after I did the first install on my 2005 Focus. Keeping this one as I can see there could be many uses for this tool!!! 565441

  • Can New Carriage Bolt be Fishwired in Place of Broken Weldnut
If you can access an open end of the frame where the weld nut broke off you could fishwire a new carriage bolt in place of the weldnut. Otherwise you may have to weld the hitch on. Looking at the install instructions for the hitches for your 2012 Honda Odyssey it looks like there are some holes in the frame that could allow a fishwire and new bolt to install. You would need 1/2 inch diameter fishwire like part # C58400. Dirty or corroded weldnuts are typically what cause them to break.

  • Solution for Stripped Weld Nut When Installing Trailer Hitch
If you can access an open end of the frame where the weld nut broke off you could fishwire a new carriage bolt in place of the weldnut. Otherwise you may have to weld the hitch on or see if a local garage like you mentioned could come up with a way to re-weld in a weld nut. For a bolt leader you could then use the # C58400. I attached a link to an install video that at the 1:30 mark shows how to fishwire hitch hardware. You will need to drill out the old weld nut.

  • Need Spacer Block to Install Used Trailer Hitch on 2008 Ford Edge
We don't have the exact spacer block that would've been included with the # C13067 hitch but the # RP3022 comes very close. The block is a little narrower, and the hole is centered rather than being on one end. This means that the block may try to spin once the bolt is being tightened. If this happens, use an impact wrench. The impact wrench will spin fast enough to prevent the block from spinning. It might take a minute or so, but the bolt will tighten. You'd also need a few bolt leaders,...
