Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Checking Out the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Kenda Karrier, ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range C. Now this is an ST tire, which means it's a special trailer tire, has sturdy sidewalls so that it can handle heavy loads. Now this is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles. It is a Ken Karrier Special trailer radial tire, uses steel belts and then polyester plies, which combine for superior function and long life.

If you look at the tread, it is a silica-infused tread, and on the tread blocks you'll notice the openings or the cuts in them. Those are sites which help reduce hydroplaning. This will also offer excellent handling in off pavement situation. We mentioned it's an ST tire. It does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications.

The wheel size this will fit is a 13 by 4 1/2 wide wheel, 13 by 5 inch wide wheel, and a 13 by 5 1/2 inch wide wheel. The tire size, which is stamped on the sidewall, ST170, ST is for special trailer. 175/80R13, R means it's a radial tire. Section width, 6.8 inches. The overall diameter on this when it's inflated is 24.1 inches.

And this tire is a load range C, which means it's a six ply rated tire, has a maximum load capacity of 1,375 pounds at 50 PSI. And the last thing is all the trailer tires are now coming through with a speed rating stamped on them and it's stamped on the sidewall with a letter designation. And where it's at is right after the tire size you'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean that it's an 81 mile per hour speed rating. But that should do it for a review of the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range C.

  • Spare Tire Needed For A 155/80R13 Tire Size
Hey John, It looks like we don't offer that specific tire size so we wouldn't be able to offer you just a spare. If you wanted to switch out your wheels/tires completely and get an extra spare then the closest option with a 4 on 4 wheel bolt pattern would be the 175/80R13 which is 24.02" in diameter and 6.89" wide compared to your current 22.76" diameter and 6.10" width. If you wanted to go this route so that you would need to check your clearance from the wheels horizontally to the...

  • Will Going to Radial from Bias Ply Tire Help Prevent Cupping
Hey Chuck, yes the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # KE48KV is steel belted. We sell these so quickly that nothing sits on our shelf for long at all so you'll get something very new. I can't promise a certain date code though as that's just too hard to predict. Going to a radial like this will get rid of the cupping which it does sound like is from the flat spot that bias plies will get from sitting too long plus the sidewall is stiffer. Going to a heavier Load Range would not...

  • Do The Kenda Karrier Tires KE48KV Have A Date Code?
Hello Kevin, thanks for reaching out. I went out to our warehouse and looked at the two # KE48KV tires we have in stock. The date code is 0824 so they were made in like February or March of last year. Keep in mind our warehouse is climate controlled, and tires do not age in proper storage. The warranty starts when you receive them. I had my hands on those things and they look brand new, they were still shiny and clean and everything. UV rays are a tires worst enemy and these have never...

  • Difference Between Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 KR35 and KR03 Tire
Hi Marty; the main difference between the # AM10199 and # KE48KV is the tread. The # AM10199, which is their KR03 tire, is the better choice for paved roads. This tread will also have better performance on the road in wet conditions. The tire also has the lower maximum load at 1,360 lbs at 50 psi. The # KE48KV, which is their KR35 tire, is the better choice for mixed terrain. This tire has a max load of 1,375 lbs at the same 50 psi. It is also 0.2" narrower. Realistically the size difference...
