Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Wheel/Tire Combo for 1995 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
The modern tire size for the 20.5 x 8.0-10 tire is 205/65-10. The exact wheel and tire combo you need will depend on the wheel bolt pattern used by your pop-up (4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle, 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle or 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt circle) as well as the load rating needed. You'll want to choose a two wheel/tires with a combined between the two load rating greater than the GVWR of the pop-up. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating represents the maximum the pop-up can weigh...

  • Recommended Wheel/Tire Combo for 1991 Coleman Newport Pop-Up Camper
According to my research, your Coleman Newport originally had 20.5 x 8-10 tires mounted on a 10 x 6 inch rim with a 4 lug on a 4 inch bolt circle. The modern designation for that tire size is 205/65-10. Please confirm the size of your existing tires, which should be listed on the tire sidewall. We offer wheel/tire combos that would work great for you. For a load range B with a 910lb capacity per wheel, use # AM3H330, # AM3H370 for a load range C with a 1100 lb capacity, # AM3H410 load...

  • 1996 Jayco Pop-Up Camper Tire and Wheel Replacement
As long as your current wheel has 4 wheel stud holes the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel part # AM3H370 will be a great choice. Overall it is 20.5" in diameter so a perfect match for what you have and a width of 8.3" so it's 3/16" of an inch wider on each side. This is a load range C tire that gives you 1,100 lbs. of capacity at 50 PSI so it will work great with campers up to 2,200 lbs. since we are using two. If your camper's a little heavier use the Kenda 205/65-10...

  • Changing from 5.70-8 Tires to 10 Inch Tires on a Trailer
As long as you have room in your wheel well for a larger tire and wheel, the only other factors that you will need to consider are the bolt pattern and weight capacity of the new tires. For example, the Kenda 205/65-10 Tire and Wheel Combo, # AM3H370, has a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern and a maximum load rating of 1,100 lbs at 50 psi. A 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern is the most common bolt pattern for 8 and 10 inch wheels, so this combo should work as long as the load rating of two wheel/tire combos...

We have a handful of options that come in different load sizes which will replace your current 20.5x8.0-10 size tires. The tire size 205/65-10 is the replacement size and is slightly smaller than your current tire. The 205/65-10 size tire with white wheel combinations are: Load Range B, # AM3H330 - max load rating 910 lbs at 35 psi Load Range C, # AM3H370 - max load rating 1,100 lbs at 50 psi Load Range D, # AM3H410 - max load rating 1,320 lbs at 70 psi Load Range E, # AM3H460 - max load...

  • Is The Hub Pilot Size Important When Using Wheels With Lug Bolts
Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the pilot hole size is very important when the trailer uses lug bolts. That means the wheel is a hub centric wheel instead of a lug centric wheel. The difference is the wheel that is hub centric will center off the pilot hole size and a lug centric wheel will center off of the studs that are on the hub. You are correct the 12 inch wheels do not have the 2.5 inch pilot diameter. The 10 inch wheels with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern are the correct wheel you...

  • Differences Between Tires Sizes 4.80-8 and 20.5 8-10
The biggest difference between the trailer tire sizes 4.80-8 and 20.5 8-10 is that they are for different diameter wheels. You would not be able to swap between those two sizes without also swapping rims. The 20.5 8-10 has a much higher weight capacity, is much taller (little over 4 inches) and is much wider (also 4 inches). If you are thinking about going to this size you will need to make sure you have enough clearance. If you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you would want the # AM3H370...

There may be a solution but I do not have 8” or 10” wheels with 2.75” pilot holes. They are all 2.5” pilot holes. I have 12” wheels with 2.84” pilot holes. • Can I Upgrade from a 4.80x8b Tire to a 205/65-10 Tire?
The answer to your question depends on your current lug pattern and clearance between your fenders and tires. When your trailer is loaded to it's full capacity, there should be a minimum clearance of 3 inches between the top of your tire and the underside of your fender. This will give you adequate clearance for potholes and bumps. There should also be a minimum of an inch of clearance from the side wall of the tire to the trailer frame. You will not be able to use the same wheels and the...

  • Trailer Tires to Replace 20.5x8x10 Tires on a Pontoon Boat Trailer
The problem you are experiencing could be due to low tongue weight and not the tires. Boat trailers generally have lower tongue weight than other trailers. Making sure the trailer is towed level and with adequate tongue weight (10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight) could help a lot. It could also be that something is wrong with the suspension but if the trailer is new that is unlikely. If you have any suspicions that there could be a suspension issue then I would have a shop that...

  • Which Load Range Tire for Utility Trailer Carrying 2 ATVs
The load range of tire you need will depend on the weight of your empty trailer. Two load range C wheel/tires like # AM3H370 would have a 2200 lb combined capacity per axle. Two load range D, such as the # AM3H410 you had looked at would have a combined capacity of 2640 lbs. The weight of the load plus the trailer should not exceed the tire's load capacity. In order to achieve their full capacity, the tires should be fully inflated to the air pressure listed on the tire sidewall. If...

  • Replacement For 20x8x10 Trailer Tires & Wheel With 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
We may have something for your Apache Royal trailer, but it depends on your wheel bolt pattern and if you have the proper amount of space to fit the tire. The closest tire available to a 20x8x10 is a 205/65-10 tire, which measures 20-1/2" tall and 8.3" wide; you're likely fine but want to measure to ensure you have at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. Then for the wheel...

Since the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 4 on 4 # AM3H370 measures in at 20.5" tall you will more than likely not have any clearance issues on your 2011 Ez-Go RXV Golf Cart, and since the 4 on 4 bolt pattern is standard on golf carts the 10" white wheels will...

The 20x8-10 tires are commonly used on lawn equipment these days, not trailers so I don't offer a trailer tire in that exact size. The good news is that there IS a trailer tire size that's extremely close in size. A 205/65-10 tire would be 1/2 inch greater in diameter, which would raise your pop-up camper by by only 1/4 of an inch, which would work just fine. The tires are .1 of an inch wider, which also won't make any difference. For a camper, you'd likely want to go with a powder coated...

You'll want to choose tires with a combined capacity that exceeds the GVWR (maximum allowed weight of pop-up itself plus gear stowed in it) of the camper. Given the 1300 lb weight I found in my research which is likely the dry weight of the camper, I'd choose a load range C tire, which would provide a combined 2200 lbs of capacity which should be more than sufficient.
