Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement For ST205/75R14 Trailer Tire & White Spoke Dexstar Wheel
Hi Charles, Appreciate the specifics you provided, and that wheel is a white spoke Dexstar wheel, which we do have with a ST205/75R14 tire. You can use either of the following, depending on the load range you need: - Load Range C (1,925 lbs): Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM32153 - Load Range D (2,200 lbs): Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" White Spoke Wheel # AM32161 Just keep in mind you want the combined load range of the tires to meet...

  • Spare Wheel/Tire Recommendation for 2020 Coleman Lantern LT 17B
Hey Darius, it looks like your 2020 Coleman Lantern LT17B uses the tire size of 205/75R14 so the best budget friendly wheel and tire combo you would want is the Karrier part # AM32153 for a white wheel or if you'd prefer a black wheel the part # AM32131.

  • Difference Between Kenda 205/75R 14 Trailer Tires
Hey Dave, I wasn't able to find any wheels listed at $163, but I was able to find the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM32153 and the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" Black Wheel # AM3S451 which are similarly priced. The reason these wheels are listed higher than the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # KE28KV is because these tires include both the tire and wheel, and the Karrier # KE28KV is just the tire. These wheels/tires also have...

You are better off with what is called an over/under kit, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00. The # K71-384-00 lifts your trailer approximately the same amount as your axle's diameter plus the height of the leaf spring pack, so you'll have more room. Then, you can go to a larger tire and wheel, the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM32153. • Why Are Powder Coated Steel Wheels Not Recommended For Fresh Water Boat Trailer
The # AM32161 and # AM32153 have powder coated steel wheels which is why they aren't recommended for a boat trailer. Since you're going to be using the trailer for fresh water and not salt water they wouldn't be as susceptible to corrosion, but it still poses a problem. The powder coat will suffer from chips and cracks over time, which will allow water to seep in through the imperfections causing them to rust. At the very least I would choose the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire...

  • Can I Switch from ST185/80D13 to the ST205/75R14 on a 2009 Jayco 17C Ex-Port
It is always recommended that you use the original tire and wheel size that came on your camper but I have calculated the size differences between the two tires. Your current wheel/tire combination, ST185/80D13, has an approximate width of 7.28 inches and is 24.66 inches in diameter. The ST205/75R/14 has an approximate width of 8.07 inches and is 26.11 inches in diameter. The variance in the dimensions are very minimal so you should not have any difficultly making the switch. You may be able to increase your tire and wheel size, but your biggest concern will be the fender and sidewall clearance and axle spacing if you have tandem axles on your pontoon trailer. For example, on a 10 inch tire and wheel like the Kenda # AM3H490 is size 205/65-10, section width 8.4 inches, and outer diameter when inflated 20.4 inches. • Can 175/80-13 Trailer Tires be Replaced with 205/75-14 Trailer Tires
First, you should put the size tires and wheels on the trailer that the trailer manufactures states. This information can be found on a sticker or plate on the trailer frame. Sometimes, a larger size can be used if there is space around the tire for the larger size. The next size up from 175/80-13 is going to be a 205/75-14. This tire will be almost 2 inches taller (1.9 inches) and about 1-3/16 inches wider. You will need to make sure that there is space above the tire and on the inside...

Long story short, yes you can. But going with the ST205/75R14 would be a better replacement than a ST205/75D14 because the R in the first size means it is a radial tire whereas the D in the second size means it is a bias ply. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or...
