Why Are Powder Coated Steel Wheels Not Recommended For Fresh Water Boat Trailer

Published 03/31/2023

Question:

I have questions on AM32153 and Am32161. I would use the tire and rim on a boat trailer. the trailer is used in fresh water not salt water. your web site said it should not be used on a boat trailer, why not? does the rim use a 60 degree lug nut? thank you for your help.

The # AM32161 and # AM32153 have powder coated steel wheels which is why they aren't recommended for a boat trailer. Since you're going to be using the trailer for fresh water and not salt water they wouldn't be as susceptible to corrosion, but it still poses a problem. The powder coat will suffer from chips and cracks over time, which will allow water to seep in through the imperfections causing them to rust.

At the very least I would choose the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel # AM32156. This finish will do a better job protecting the wheels. The best choice for your boat trailer would be an aluminum wheel like the # KE87JR. Then you don't have to worry about rust at all. All of these use lug nuts with a 60 degree cone like the # 12CLN.
