Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

it's a very good looking trailer tire on a white spoke rim...what more can I say, it looks to be round so i'm sure it will roll good...I have not used the trailer yet, so I can not say anymore then that !!!!!

It's really nice that you can purchase something like this already put together, and ready to go bolt on. None of the local stores had this ready to go and not to mention the price was outstandingly perfect! Just wish there was an option for the center caps to be purchased with the tire and wheel or advertise one that would fit for purchase separately....

I bought this for a spare on my 2 wheel trailer. It matches the other wheels perfectly. Also I was impressed with the super fast shipping.

The tires and rims I ordered from etrailer fit and look great. The web site was easy to use and I ordered with confidence. I would recommend getting tires from etrailer. Remember measure twice, order once..

The tires I ordered arrived in a week from ordering day to my door. Pretty quick! The 4 tires arrived individually boxed, and filled with air in perfect condition (see pics). I didn't know they would be boxed, I thought they may be plastic wrapped or something. Boxing is better as that helped them to arrive in excellent condition. They match the boat trailer perfectly and I would do business with etrailer again anytime! There just isn't anything I could possibly complain about. 5/5 stars.

Bought an old camper with unmatched tires. Etrailer had exactly what I was looking for. Tires were delivered faster than I expected. Each one in its own box. Really good product at a great price. I would have given a 5 star but I ordered a set of 4 and only 3 were delivered. Found out afterward that my order was split and the 4th tire would be delivered in a couple days. I will do business with etrailer again for sure!

One year later and still no issues whatsoever. I tow my 3600lb boat approx 3000 miles a year and these tires hold up. No question I would buy these tires again. Great product, great company yo do business with.

I ordered 2 wheels/tires, and they showed up at my door 47 hours and 15 minutes later. Outstanding! And that was using the standard free shipping. You can't beat that with a length of iron pipe. They great on my newly rebuilt trailer, too. (see photos) I haven't put any miles on them yet, other than pushing it in and out of my shop a couple times, so I 'spose you could say they have about 30 feet on them so far. From the other reviews of these tires I suspect they will perform fine. The price for the tires was $27.00 less apiece than a local trailer dealer for the exact same product. That gives me $54.00 to spend on doo-dads for my motorcycle! (As if you can buy much for a motorcycle for $54.00...)

The Kenda Loadstar ST204/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14 Inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM3S440 is a great match to your existing tires and will work well as a spare tire. If you need a spare tire carrier, I recommend the Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier # FSTC1000301. This carrier is designed to fit 4 on 4 and 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt patterns. It will fit a trailer tongue up to 3 inches wide x 4 inches high. I have attached an installation video for you.

  • 14 inch Rim and Tire Recommendation for a 1971 Aristocrat Lo-Liner
Ply ratings and weight capacity are basically two different ways to say the same thing nowadays. As long as the weight rating is adequate for your setup you would be fine. For a wheel and tire combo I would go with the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial with 14 in White Wheel part # over the part # AM3S440 since radials are preferred over bias plys. The manufacture of tire and wheel combo # AM3S440 does a type of balancing for tire and wheel combos. They line up the heavy spot in the tire with the light spot in the wheel. Assuming that your existing wheels feature a 5 on 4-1/52 bolt pattern, we offer two different wheel/tire combinations of that wheel and tire size. For a bias ply tire, use part # AM3S434. • Trailer Tire Load Range Differences Based on Size
Load ranges will vary based on the tire size. For example a Load Range C tire in the 4.80-12 tire size like the part # AM30660 that you referenced has a 990 lb capacity at 90 psi. A Load Range C ST205/75D14 like part # AM3S440 would have a 1,760 lb capacity at 50 psi. I wish I had a simpler answer to provide for you. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires for you to check out.
