Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement Tires For Utility Trailer That Uses ST205/75D14
I can certainly help you out with that. If you just need replacement ST205/75D14 tires for your utility trailer then I recommend the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM1ST86. These are rated at 1,760 lbs each, translating to 3,520 lbs per axle which exceeds your trailer's GVWR of 2,990 lbs per axle per your photo. If you want the replacement wheel and tire combo so that you don't have to go to the tire shop to get them installed, you can go with the Loadstar ST205/75D14...

  • Is The Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14 White Wheel # AM3S440 Balanced?
The Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM3S440 are not balanced. Balancing a trailer tire is not required since it is designed for supporting heavy loads and not smooth rides like a vehicle wheel and tire. You can still have them balanced at a local tire shop or the Counteract Tire Balancing Beads # CA83VR can also be added. The balance beads will find the light spot of your tire as you drive and will continue to balance through the life of the tire. So you will...

The Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM3S440 will deliver mounted to your door. You will want to check the air pressure and set it before mounting on your trailer as the tire pressure can change over time due to temperatures and elevation changes. This wheel and tire comes mounted from the manufacturer as we do not mount any tires on wheels in our facility.

  • Recommended Replacements for a Trailer Hub With an LM67048 Inner Bearing and LM11949 Outer Bearing
It sounds like you have an agricultural style hub, like our part # AH15450ECOMP. In reality, replacement items are available for your current setup, but because you mention that this a boat trailer, your best option would really be to switch out to an EZ-Lube assembly. The current agricultural hub might hold up if you are just submerging them once or twice a season, but for repeated use you will really want to switch out the spindle, hub, and wheels. I would recommend going with EZ-Lube...

  • Are Trailer Tire and Wheel Combos Balanced
The manufacture of tire and wheel combo # AM3S440 does a type of balancing for tire and wheel combos. They line up the heavy spot in the tire with the light spot in the wheel. Trailer tires do not have to be any more balanced than that. You can try to have them balanced further but it takes a special rig that most tire shops no longer have. If they try to balance it on a regular machine it will not work.

  • Recommended 14 Inch Trailer Wheels, Tires, and Lugs for 5 on 4-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 14" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM32161 is my recommendation for a radial tire and Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S440 for a bias tire. The lugs you can use are the Chrome Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 1/2" (Each) # 12CLN or CE Smith Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - Zinc-Plated Steel - 1/2" - Qty 1 # CE11051. The Kenda/Loadstar tires are manufactured in either Taiwan or mainland China. You'd be hard pressed to find a trailer tire that's manufactured in the US these days. The tires still meet stringent DOT specifications, just like a tire manufactured here would. If you look at the product reviews for the, you can see that the # AM3S440 wheel/tire combo is very highly rated by our customers. The overwhelming majority of trailer tires are rated for a maximum speed of 65 mph. Exceeding this speed...

When comparing the 175/80-13 and the 185/80-13 tires, load range D, there is not much difference. The larger 185 is going to be about 0.3 inches taller, about 3/8 of an inch wider, and have a higher capacity at 1,725 pounds at 65 psi. Both sizes will fit on the same rim. Please note the higher capacity does not allow you to carry more weight. Trailer tires should also always be inflated to the maximum psi rating indicated on the tire. Hi Joe, For a 14 inch wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you'd also need new tires, of course, and you can get that with the Loadstar ST205/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel # AM3S440.
