Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The tire and wheel assemblies look good. I haven’t pulled the trailer yet so this isn’t an in-use review. I couldn’t give them 5 stars because one of the assemblies needed 4 1/2 ounces of wheel weights to balance. To those of you that would argue they don’t require balancing I say this...if it rotates, if it spins it needs to be balanced! Great prices, excellent shipping services. You can’t go wrong.

Comments
Have 6000 miles on these tires now and they are wearing and riding well. I tow at 70 MPH so I balanced the tire and wheel assemblies when new.

I ordered 5 each Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14, load range D, rim mounted tires. I received via UPS, 5 each Loadstar Karrier ST205/75R14 105/101M, load range D tires, well packed in a timely manner in good condition. DOT manufacture codes were from the first half of 2016. I hope that helps folks that wondered about the complete tire code. I don't understand why everybody is so stingy about publishing the complete tire code when it does in fact provide the MOST valuable comparison information.

I mounted the tire/rims to my 5 on 4 1/2 hubs, torqued the nuts to specs, and drove about 20 miles round trip to a truck scale to weigh my rig. Happly, with a partial load, I was 1200 lbs under my max load. The trailer pulled good and at this point I've very happy with the purchase, considering 14 inch, load range D tires are hard to come by.

My trailer is 10 years old, and it has seen about 4K miles of travel each year. The last few of years, I've had several blow outs, initially on a 4 year old set of load range C radials which I replaced in November of 2015 with a set of load range C bias ply tires. On my third 1000 (500 miles one way) mile run this spring, I had two blowouts, one coming and one going, on the passenger side. Inspection of the passenger side wheel well indicated there had been some rubbing. From day one the clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well has be close, around 2 inches.

As a disclaimer, I've not been the best at keeping my speed down, made some modifications to the trailer that have added about 350 lbs to the base weight, and my wife loads heavy for our dry camping excursions. These factors have probably contributed to my blowouts. After the last blow out, I decided to take some more aggressive action: I upgraded the suspension with heavy duty springs, upgraded the tires to these LRD Karriers, have taken the decision to actively manage a light cargo pack, and when not rolling I'm taking most of the weight off the tires.

Hopefully, all my actions, and Importantly, the significant upgrade to load range D tires will solve my problems.

Put about 3000 miles on the tires this spring and early summer. They are wearing well, no problems. Delighted.

Was looking for a set of tires for a camping trailer that I am putting together. Checked out the BIG online store named after the river. Saw a bunch of tire sets for sale there. Good prices too! But, for my needs, I needed a set of tires, not just wheels, that were of good quality and I could count on. I have used Kenda tires before and I knew that they made good stuff. The tires on the BIG online store had tires that got mixed reviews, some good some bad. I paid approx 30% more for the tires and wheels here. But, I feel that I got tires, which is the most important part, that I can count on. Shipping was fast, even over a holiday weekend. If I find that I need another set, will be here first to see what is available. Thanks for a smooth transaction.

And, if it happens that there is a problem with these tires, then I will update this review.

Excellent customer service. Placed order Sunday evening and arrived on my door step Wednesday morning. Tires and wheels reflect quality and was exactly what I needed.

by:

Great follow thru on partial delivery screw up with UPS- Was able to talk to a real person who had the answers and tracked my missing tire until it arrived a few days later. She was good to her word and kept me abreast as it unfolded to the whereabouts of the missing tire. Great Job! Will use again!

by:

Very quick and easy process to find the matching rim and tire I needed for my trailer. The price was very reasonable, and the shipping was very fast!

by:

TT spare tire and wheel, so hopefully we’ll never need to use it, but in the meantime, I’m confident in the quality and it was at a very good price.

by:

Very good results from the Karrier Tires. Notice the date code in lower portion of photo the tire was made the 45th week of 2016. The tires are fresh when you receive them. Just returned from 2k trip with no visible wear. Thanks! etrailer

Perfect for my ACME car dolly. Replaced some 10” tires for these and worked amazing! Have 2500 miles on them now towing a Honda Odyssey and little wear.

by:

I needed two wheels and tires for my travel trailer. Etrailer had exactly what I needed and I received them in a few days

by:

I have had my trailer at a remote campground all season. On a recent trip, I noticed that the tread cap on my tires was separating from the sidewalls. Not wanting to risk a blow out while towing to the nearest town, I decided to order these tire and wheel combos and replace them myself on my next trip up to the trailer. Janice, the sales rep, was extremely helpful assisting my with my order. The shipment was received when it was supposed to be. I was very impressed to see that my tires were manufactured in the 41st week of 2016. That's only 5 weeks old as we are in the 46th week now. I couldn't be happier! Please take the tires to be balanced as they do not come balanced and were far from perfect. I had them balanced and inflated to specs. I installed them yesterday and made my 400 mile trip home. No problems and the tires look no worse for wear and handled excellent.

by:

I have purchased several tires and other trailer parts in the past. Their prices are good and the service is excellent. All sales personnel is very knowledgeable about the products.

by:

Great tire and rim. It was exactly what I was expecting.

by:

This is a spare tire, so it's not like I'm putting it into service immediately, which means I can't say how it works. It arrived in good condition, and I believe it will be a good spare for my 2018 Coleman Lantern 215BH. The only downfall is that I bought this in September 2019, and the date code on the DOT number of the tire decodes to the 26th week of 2017, so the tire was over 1 year old already, but that's probably typical for this type of item. Assuming it's been inside a warehouse the whole time, I don't expect the age to cause any problems. As expected, etrailer came through with great customer service and fast shipping.

by:

Very fast shipping. Tires/wheels look good except they didn’t paint the inside of the rims very well. Very disappointed as I thought I was getting quality . Don’t have time to drive 5 miles to get paint as I need this trailer on the road picking up equipment. Will have to remove them later and paint the rims like they should have been delivered correctly.Need to QC your product before shipping. Can’t get photo to upload.

I was really happy on how it got here so fast since we were going on a trip. The product was of high quality. I will use your company again for any other needs

by:

This tire/wheel combo is just what I needed. It'll be going on a 20 year old cargo trailer that was just sitting outside all of that time and never towed! My first loaded tow will be a 2,500 mile one-way adventure, one not to do without a spare tire.

by:

Bought it for a spare on car dolly and has approximately 4,000 miles on it and doing great!!

by:

Super. Fast shipping. Excellent customer service. Quality parts.

by:

I shopped around at local big box stores, tire shops and farm supply companies for a set of replacement tires and rims for my utility trailer and your prices were considerably lower for the exact same or similar items depending on the store I was researching. I had good previous transactions with your company so I ordered my tires and rims. The items were as described and shipped a lot faster than promised, it was only about three days from my order being placed that they were delivered to my doorstep! Keep up the good work, thanks!

by:

this tire showed up in great time. looks good its is exactly what i ordered. it is going to be a spare for my camper. the price was around $20 less than what i could order in my area. and i would have to had ordered a D rated tire and a rim. because only C Rated assemblies were stocked.

by:

The Tire/Wheel combo arrived in perfect condition and installed easily. The radial tires were a bit heavier than the original bias ply tires I was replacing. I anticipate the trailer will track better.

Great customer service. Great team effort!

by:

I have a 4x8 trailmate purchased 20 years ago .. original tires still on it. The side walls started to crack . Searches online and etrailer seemed to have great reviews. Well about a week later my baby got new shoes.. could not be any happier. Well informed about status and delivery.. keep up the great work.

by:

The quality of these wheels/tires did not surprize me. I specifically ordered a larger size than my travel trailer came with and they fit great. Now I wont have to worry about these tires for the next couple yrs.

  • Can 205 Millimeter Section Width Trailer Tires be replaced by 215 Millimeter Tires?
Yes they will work as long as the rim you have has a width in the range from 5 inches to 6-1/2 inches. Since you're going to a larger tire you also have to consider the reduced wheel well clearance. I have included a couple of resources to refer to as well. There isn't much of a difference in diameter, but any time you change tires you will want to have 4.5 inches of clearance from the top of your tread to the bottom of your wheel well in clearance so there is no interference.
