Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Very fast shipping. Tires/wheels look good except they didn’t paint the inside of the rims very well. Very disappointed as I thought I was getting quality . Don’t have time to drive 5 miles to get paint as I need this trailer on the road picking up equipment. Will have to remove them later and paint the rims like they should have been delivered correctly.Need to QC your product before shipping. Can’t get photo to upload.

I am sorry to hear about this paint issue. Customer Service will be reaching out to you.

The tire and wheel assemblies look good. I haven’t pulled the trailer yet so this isn’t an in-use review. I couldn’t give them 5 stars because one of the assemblies needed 4 1/2 ounces of wheel weights to balance. To those of you that would argue they don’t require balancing I say this...if it rotates, if it spins it needs to be balanced! Great prices, excellent shipping services. You can’t go wrong.

Have 6000 miles on these tires now and they are wearing and riding well. I tow at 70 MPH so I balanced the tire and wheel assemblies when new.

I ordered 5 each Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14, load range D, rim mounted tires. I received via UPS, 5 each Loadstar Karrier ST205/75R14 105/101M, load range D tires, well packed in a timely manner in good condition. DOT manufacture codes were from the first half of 2016. I hope that helps folks that wondered about the complete tire code. I don't understand why everybody is so stingy about publishing the complete tire code when it does in fact provide the MOST valuable comparison information. I mounted the tire/rims to my 5 on 4 1/2 hubs, torqued the nuts to specs, and drove about 20 miles round trip to a truck scale to weigh my rig. Happly, with a partial load, I was 1200 lbs under my max load. The trailer pulled good and at this point I've very happy with the purchase, considering 14 inch, load range D tires are hard to come by. My trailer is 10 years old, and it has seen about 4K miles of travel each year. The last few of years, I've had several blow outs, initially on a 4 year old set of load range C radials which I replaced in November of 2015 with a set of load range C bias ply tires. On my third 1000 (500 miles one way) mile run this spring, I had two blowouts, one coming and one going, on the passenger side. Inspection of the passenger side wheel well indicated there had been some rubbing. From day one the clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well has be close, around 2 inches. As a disclaimer, I've not been the best at keeping my speed down, made some modifications to the trailer that have added about 350 lbs to the base weight, and my wife loads heavy for our dry camping excursions. These factors have probably contributed to my blowouts. After the last blow out, I decided to take some more aggressive action: I upgraded the suspension with heavy duty springs, upgraded the tires to these LRD Karriers, have taken the decision to actively manage a light cargo pack, and when not rolling I'm taking most of the weight off the tires. Hopefully, all my actions, and Importantly, the significant upgrade to load range D tires will solve my problems.

Put about 3000 miles on the tires this spring and early summer. They are wearing well, no problems. Delighted.

Super. Fast shipping. Excellent customer service. Quality parts.

- AM32161

Very fast shipping, good price and exactly what I needed. It is a spare for my camper. On our way home from our latest camping trip I had a blow out so I had to put this tire on. Unfortunately, the valve stem was leaking around the base of it. When I got it I made sure it was aired up and looked good. I still got home with alot of stops to fill it back up, about every 2 or 3 miles, but I got home. I would still recommend this.

- AM32161

I got these tires to replace the tires I bought from etrailer five years ago, they look good and have metal valve stems. The old tires held up fine, one valve stem needed to be replaced because of a crack that leaked.

- AM32161

I have had my trailer at a remote campground all season. On a recent trip, I noticed that the tread cap on my tires was separating from the sidewalls. Not wanting to risk a blow out while towing to the nearest town, I decided to order these tire and wheel combos and replace them myself on my next trip up to the trailer. Janice, the sales rep, was extremely helpful assisting my with my order. The shipment was received when it was supposed to be. I was very impressed to see that my tires were manufactured in the 41st week of 2016. That's only 5 weeks old as we are in the 46th week now. I couldn't be happier! Please take the tires to be balanced as they do not come balanced and were far from perfect. I had them balanced and inflated to specs. I installed them yesterday and made my 400 mile trip home. No problems and the tires look no worse for wear and handled excellent.

- AM32161

Very good results from the Karrier Tires. Notice the date code in lower portion of photo the tire was made the 45th week of 2016. The tires are fresh when you receive them. Just returned from 2k trip with no visible wear. Thanks! etrailer

After one year and over 10k miles the Karrier tires and wheels are looking great.

- AM32161

So far these four wheels and tires are excellent. I put about 6000 miles on them this last year. But this is not my first experience with these tires I Bought 4 of these tires from etrailer about 6 years ago. So that is why I bought the last set. No flats and no problems. Everybody knows what happens with a blowout on a camper. All your trim is taken off and more damage. So you need good tires and maintenance.

I have no problem with these tires and wheels. Mater of fact it’s my second set of the same tires. If I have the need I will order them again.

- AM32161

The Tire/Wheel combo arrived in perfect condition and installed easily. The radial tires were a bit heavier than the original bias ply tires I was replacing. I anticipate the trailer will track better. Great customer service. Great team effort!

- AM32161

This is a spare tire, so it's not like I'm putting it into service immediately, which means I can't say how it works. It arrived in good condition, and I believe it will be a good spare for my 2018 Coleman Lantern 215BH. The only downfall is that I bought this in September 2019, and the date code on the DOT number of the tire decodes to the 26th week of 2017, so the tire was over 1 year old already, but that's probably typical for this type of item. Assuming it's been inside a warehouse the whole time, I don't expect the age to cause any problems. As expected, etrailer came through with great customer service and fast shipping.

- AM32161

This tire/wheel combo is just what I needed. It'll be going on a 20 year old cargo trailer that was just sitting outside all of that time and never towed! My first loaded tow will be a 2,500 mile one-way adventure, one not to do without a spare tire.

- AM32161

Great tires! Nice wheels! Good price and fast delivery!

- AM32161

Tires came faster than I expected a day earlier... I have a utility Trailer capable of carrying 3,300 pounds rated so load range D 2,200 per tire gives me a great safety factor from blowouts from loads 4,400 Lbs...LOL not that I would ever get there max but with son in laws borrowing it...who knows....Its hard to get load range D tires here and if you find them they cost some ample more... Thank you etrailer and Carol employees for fast delivery and cost savings... signed a retired firefighter who believes in safety factors that exceed loads

- AM32161

This load star tire and wheel is an exact replacement for another that was performing very well on our boat trailer until something on the road put a hole in it. The whole assembly with free shipping was cheaper than just a tire and mounting. Makes for an easy decision and no reason to think this one won't be just as good as the one it replaces.

A year in and still performing great.

Open the boxes and was impressed by the quality of of the tires and wheels. Putting them on this weekend to try them out.

- AM32161

The quality of these wheels/tires did not surprize me. I specifically ordered a larger size than my travel trailer came with and they fit great. Now I wont have to worry about these tires for the next couple yrs.

- AM32161

Product was exactly as indicated on line. Product was delivered in 2 days and ready to use. Price was good. This was an exceptionally easy process and company kept me informed through all the steps. I couldn't ask for anything better.

I have a 4x8 trailmate purchased 20 years ago .. original tires still on it. The side walls started to crack . Searches online and etrailer seemed to have great reviews. Well about a week later my baby got new shoes.. could not be any happier. Well informed about status and delivery.. keep up the great work.

- AM32161

Arrived perfect, ready to go! Thanks e trailer!

- AM32161

Just received the wheel and tire today. Looks perfect. Planning to use it as a spare, so with luck it will never see any use. eTrailer customer service folks were extremely helpful when I called looking for assistance.

- AM32161

Excellent tires and super fast (free) shipping! I cannot ask for more.

- AM32161

Excellent quality trailer tire and wheel and a very reasonable price. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a replacement tire or, as in my case, a spare tire.

- AM32161

Bought this combo to replace/upgrade my second blowout on an original equipment Load Range C tire for my travel trailer. Identical to my first replacement bought from a competitor, but about $38 cheaper from etrailer. The former replacement has made it for about 1,500 miles with no problems, and this one took me the 110 miles to the shop to have the fairly extensive damage from the latter blowout repaired. I'm cautiously optimistic, but a little gun-shy on trailer tires in general. From now on I'll automatically upgrade to Load Range D when I buy a trailer.

Unfortunately, repair of the damage from my blowout took most of the camping season and $6,000. Therefore, I have not been able to put very many miles on the upgraded tires. Based on advise from my local tire shop, I used spray-on tire dressing designed to block uv, and everything looks good, though. Looking forward to using it much more this spring. Still have a high opinion of etrailer.

One of the best websites and service I’ve ever seen. No joke. The gold standard. I wanna buy stuff I don’t even need. That’s how great etrailer is.

The Kenda, Karrier, and Loadstar tires that we carry, such as # AM32161, are rated for a maximum of 81 miles per hour. If you exceed the rating for extended periods of time it will lead to excessive heat build up and heat is the number 1 enemy of tires. • Was There a PSI Requirement Change for the Karrier Wheel and Tire part # AM32161
Some changes were made to the Karrier Wheel and Tire part # AM32161 that you referenced. They changed the PSI requirement for the tire after they made minor tweaks to it. So you'll need to run the required PSI of each tire that is listed on the sidewall and you'll be fine. It was smart of you to put the different PSI tires on different axles too to keep the tires consistent on either side.
