Can I Put Larger Tires On My Small Boat Trailer?

Updated 07/30/2025 | Published 07/23/2025

Question:

I have a small boat trailer with tires 5 lug, 4.8 x 8. Looking to get a bigger tire that can just bolt on more suitable for some decent sand. You know of any options?

Hello Marco, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to put larger tires on your boat trailer. The main thing to consider here is the wheel well clearance. You want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer.

The 4.80/4.00-8 tires are about 4.7" wide and 16/1" in diameter. So if you can tell me how much clearance you are working with currently, we can use that to determine if larger tires will fit, and what sizes would work.

Reply on this page and let me know. I am happy to look into it.

Thanks for the response, I do have almost 4 inches of clearance between the tire and fenders, and 2.5 inches between the tire and the trailer frame.

@Marco Ok great! So the next size up that would fit without going too big would be a 5.70-8. These are about 6" wide and 18" in diameter so it would fit in your wheel well and still have adequate clearance for suspension travel. Take a look at the following: - Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30156
