Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Fulton Hi Mount Spare Tire Carrier, part number FSTC100301. Flat tires and blow outs can happen even on trailers. That's why it's important to have a spare tire with you. Many trailers don't come with a spare tire carrier. The Fulton Hi Mount Spare Tire Carrier solves this problem for you. The hardware to mount your spare tire is included, which is nice.

You won't have to provide your own lugs.Customers on our site are wanting to know more specifics about a wheel fit. You'll want to note that it's going to work with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, and a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, with a 10 inch diameter or larger wheel. It will not work with a 5 on 4-3/4 bolt pattern, or a 5 on 5 bolt pattern, or a 5 on 5-1/5 bolt pattern. It's a welded reinforced steel construction with zinc plating so it's going to be resistant to rust and corrosion. The corrosion resistance is great, especially for boat trailers, like this one here.

The angle design is going to keep your spare tire up and out of the way so you don't have to worry about ground clearance issues. The mounting plate extends out about 4-3/4 of an inch. It has a 5-1/2 inch rise.Customer Robert L. says, "It's easy to install. It is a very sturdy mount.

May have to move to the side of the trailer somehow. Not sure how it will affect my turning abilities as I have just mounted it."Those are some good points, Robert. It is easy to install. There's no drilling required. Also when mounting it to your trailer's tongue or A-frame you'll want to be sure that it doesn't interfere with your turning radius or any other towing components. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed.

This can be either mounted to your trailer's tongue or frame. You'll just need to be sure that your frame height is no more than 4 inches high and 3 inches wide. Now, when choosing the location for your spare tire mount, you'll want to make sure you have plenty of room for your spare tire. We're going to put ours right around this location. Now, the kit comes with two different sets of bolts depending on the size of your trailers tongue or your trailer's frame. We're going to be using the shorter bolt. Now let's install it. We'll want to be sure that it's angled upward where the single hole is on top. That's going to be the same for our brackets. The flat side goes up against the trailer in a single hole on top. Hold it in place, take my hardware. With one bracket in place we'll take a lock washer followed by a nut. Here on the bottom we'll pass it through the carrier and then through the bracket. With all the bolts loosely installed we can tighten everything down evenly. We want to make sure that it's flush up against the frame on both sides. Then you'll want to torque it down. You can find these specifications in your instructions. Now let's get it ready for our spare tire. You'll notice we have three different holes. For our four lug wheel we'll be using the center hole. For our five lug wheel we'll be using the corner and the bottom center, which is what we have. We'll take the included carriage bolts, there and there, and then we can install the push nuts. The push nuts are going to keep our carriage bolts in place. Now let's bring in our spare tire and we'll lift it in position. We'll be taking a flat washer, a lock washer and then the nut. These are all included. Once we get it hand tightened we can torque it down to the manufacturer's specifications. That's going to complete our look and installation of the Fulton Hi Mount Spare Tire Carrier, part number FSTC1000301.

My husband put the spare tire holder on the boat trailer yesterday 9/17/17. He said it took him no time at all and was an easy installation. He is impressed with the quality, heaviness of the bolts and metal, etc. Ordering and shipping time was great. Do not know of anything else we need for our boat trailer at this time, but will not hesitate to order from etrailer.com again. Thanks for an excellent order experience and your follow-up. No problems with the spare tire holder. Great to get the tire out of the back of our SUV and have easier access to it if we need it.

I have a Haulmark cargo trailer. The frame between the "box" and coupling is about 12 inches off the ground - when I put this bracket on and mounted the spare tire on it, it was only about 4 inches off the ground, which worried me. I really wanted to mount the tire on the frame, on the front of the "box". I was able to put this bracket on the front of the cargo box, with the backing plates "sideways" inside the box, with the mounting bolts on each side of a frame member. I put it so that if anything gave way, the frame would support the spare tire and after almost a year, the tire is still about 1/2 inch off the frame like it was the day I installed this. What I like is that the tire is up and out of the way, it's easy to dismount if I need it, and it's obviously well off the road. Well made and does what I needed it to do. My only caution is to make sure it will hold the tire up high enough if you choose to put it on the trailer frame. 315970

My review is still valid - I like it the way that I installed it - the tire is solid on the bracket.

I needed a way to carry a spare tire on my ATV trailer before my luck ran out and I got stranded with a flat. This works perfectly. It's well contructed, and should last for the life of the trailer. The description allowed me to be sure it would fit, and customer service has been very good. 368694

You guys/gals at eTrailer are a model for GREAT customer service and products. I'm an IT Professional and love the order tracking with a map ... never seen that before. The product came quickly (thanks for upgrading my shipping FOR FREE!). Nicely manufactured part and the short bolts fit nicely on the relatively short single tongue of my 5x8 Carry-On trailer (13" wheels) with enough clearance to allow swinging up the wheeled tongue jack. The height of this unit allowed for ample ground clearance (about 10") from the bottom of the spare to the ground. In the event that the trailer ball came off at speed, the tire would hit the ground before the end of the coupler, not a good situation but I think the trailer would be less likely to dig in and pitch its contents off like a trebuchet! After looking at it installed, I think I could raise it an inch or so by sliding the unit up on the tongue and using a block to takes up the space between the top of the tongue and the bolts. Very happy ... if you need a tongue mount in a cramped space like I did, I highly recommend this. There is also a hole in the section that extends out away from the trailer's tongue through which you can pass a chain/security cable and if you cinch it up tight enough will prevent removal of the wheel and/or the mount itself. Nice! 124743

I ordered this Fulton Spare Tire Mount to attach the 8 inch wheels as spares. I found that when I mounted the 8 inch rim on the support, the rim came in contact with the support arm and didnot allow the wheel to make a flush contact with the backing plate where the two bolts hold the wheel to the mount. I made a spacer to fit between the wheel and backing plate and used longer bolts to anchor the wheel to the support. This should be noted in the catalog that the support was not built for the 8 inch wheel. The unit would fit a larger wheel ok. Just take a new 8 inch wheel and try to fit it flush on the support. The support and the wheel were of good quality. The only problem is the arm between the two plates should be three inchs longer and the problem would be solved. Sam Johnson 45321

Listed in the specs is a note that the carrier should only be used with 10 inch or larger wheels.

This is a well constructed Fulton Hi-Mount offset spare tire carrier for my 1956 trailer. It fit perfectly on may 3" main channel with parts to spare. The shorter bolts may be useful elsewhere. There is plenty of ground clearance for my 5 hole 8" spare tire with plenty of clearance from the bumper and trailer jack. This took me about 30 minutes to install on the side yard of my garage. It may have taken me longer due to the need to locate the tools I would need for the installation but I was in no rush. With the spare tire mounted high and aft of the tongue hitch it feels very secure for highway travel. I may need to fine a way to lock the tire to the trailer to deter theft but I am happy with this unit so far. 299721

Received and mounted the tire carrier today, took all of about 8 minutes. Works great. Did not want to mount on the tongue area, I felt it would be in the way when I power load the boat and climb down to winch it forward. I mounted on the side and it does not stick out any more than the tires so it won't interfere when I back in my garage. I wish the product came with a cable lock. Boat is an 18 ft. Nitro 200805

Fantastic price, great selection, and free shipping to boot. I needed new tires for a long ATV trip and wanted a spare tire as well (I know, I know, but I usually only trailer locally). I ordered these radial tires and rims pre-mounted which allowed me to use one of the old wheels as my spare. Everything performed flawlessly over about 600 miles and even held their torque specs when I checked them during and after the trip. The spare tire carrier compliments the galvanized trailer frame and rims and looks like it will hold up to the elements of the North East. All in all, I highly recommend these products and etrailer. 451688

My bracket arrived when expected and I couldn't be happier with the service received from etrailer.com. I needed something to attach my cargo trailer's spare tire to the trailer frame and this bracket did the trick. I installed it so that the spare rests horizontally on top of the frame and not on the side. Installation was easy and the tire is secure. I now have much needed space inside my trailer. 138375

Boater's have known for along time that Fulton products are a step above most others out there. I bought this spare tire bracket to replace one that was stolen along with my spare tire and rim. I put heavy chain around the trailer frame and thru the wheel this time as you can see in the picture. Many thanks to etrailer.com for being so fast with their shipping . This is the very best company I have seen in many years and they truly understand what consumers want--great customer service! 361477

Seems like a great product, shipping took about a week for me. Only thing bad I have to say is the place I wanted to mount it on my boat trailer, the frame was too big and this would not adjust to that size. That's completely my fault for not measuring! But I found another spot that works just fine and from start to finish I had my spare tire mounted on the trailer in about 10 minutes! Very happy now as I've never been able to pack a spare trailer tire for the trailer! 200950

The spare tire carrier is a quality item and installed easily. The only problem is that I didn't read enough of the fine print or other reviews and I completely missed the part in the (deep) in the description stating it does not work with 5 on 5 bolt pattern. I only read the headline that said works with 4 and 5 hole bolt pattern's. There really should be at least a subnote in that statement. As it is there does not seem to be any of this type of carrier that will work so I am just going keep it. I mounted the rim solidly with one bolt and am using the second bolt to secure the inner hole of the rim. That will work just fine. 226155

Item was built very nice and heavy duty. Came with two lengths of bolts for mounting on trailer. My only complaint was that the nuts that hold the tire on are not a standard lug nut size. So that means you will need a different wrench when you are on the side of the road to take it off. I may swap out the nuts for real lug nuts which would have been better than the nut and split washer included with the set. 400857

I received the bracket as scheduled, and yes, it will hold the spare tire on the trailer. It is very well made with heavy gauge material, and the welds are good. My only issue, and I realize it says so all over the packing box, is the pieces are only zinc plated "for corrosion protection". You'd think for $49, the parts should at least be galvanized or powder coated to resist corrosion because zinc plating alone just won't do it. So now I'll have to paint all the parts before installing them, but I have time, since I don't need to use the trailer until this Fall. Just another labor step I hadn't anticipated for a $49 simple bracket. 640051

This is a easy and straightforward installation, the instructions are very well written and easy to understand, it took me approximately seven minutes to install. I did a lot of research online for a spare tire mount and found this one to be the least expensive and has the highest customer ratings of all that I looked at. I have an aluminum trailer and it shows to mount it in this location, i’m not sure it will work being so close to the hitch I may have to move it to the side of the trailer which means I’ll have to drill holes I’ll post pics if I do . 598035

I linked a video showing an example installation for you.

  • Recommended Spare Tire Carrier and Trailer Box for Small Aluminum Trailer
  • For your 2000 lb Silverwing trailer, I recommend the following accessories: For your spare tire carrier, I recommend the Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier - Fits 4- and 5-Lug Wheels # FSTC1000301. For your trailer dolly, I recommend the MaxxTow MaxxHaul Dual Pull Trailer Dolly - 1-7/8" Hitch Ball - Steel - 600 lbs # MT70881 because it has the pneumatic all-terrain tires and the handle and stand to make it easy to operate and store when not in use. You will need to trade out the...

  • Spare Tire and Wheel Combo, Size ST185/80-13, Needed for Waverunner Trailer
  • We have a tire and wheel combo that will work great as a spare tire on your waverunner trailer. Since the spare tire is for a trailer that will put into the water, a great option is a tire on a galvanized wheel, such as the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 Inch Galvanized Wheel, 5 on 4-1/2 Inch Wheel Bolt Pattern, Load Range D # AM3S334. The tire size, load range, construction, and wheel diameter of the # AM3S334 all match the information you provided from your existing...

  • Spare Tire 4.80-12 Recommendation Plus Cover and Carrier
  • We do carry that tire size in a Load Range C like the part # TTWSF48012C which would be my recommendation. This the best choice as it has a higher speed rating than most tires at 81 mph. Then for a spare tire carrier we have the part # FSTC1000301 which would work well. A tire of size 4.80 - 12 has an overall diameter of 20-1/2-inches and is approximately 4-inches wide. For a cover for that size you would want # CE27410.

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for Kayak Carrier and 4 Bolt Spare
  • We have a U-bolt type carrier that fits 4 bolt spares like yours. For that we have the part # CE22007Z-11050-2. Or if you are looking for a carrier that holds the wheel away from the trailer you'd want the part # FSTC1000301.

  • Spare 4.80-12 Trailer Tire and Wheel for Utility Trailer Used as a Kayak Trailer
  • The problem that you are having is due to the trailer suspension not being compressed enough from the light load. Changing tire load ranges will not help in this case. You could change the trailer suspension but then you would have to be very careful not to overload the trailer so I do not recommend that. The other option is to put more weight on the trailer so it compresses the suspension a little more. This will help prevent the ride from being so stiff and jarring when you go over...

  • Will Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier # FSTC1000301 Work on 5 x 10 V-Nose Trailer w/ Short Tongue
  • You should have no problem mounting the Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier, # FSTC1000301, on your V-nose short tongue trailer. This carrier fits trailer tongues up to 3 inches wide and 4 inches high and works with 10 inch diameter or larger wheels having a 4 on 4 or 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. Since you do have a short nose trailer, there is a chance that the tire could interfere with full operation of the jack handle and make it a bit more tedious to raise and lower the trailer. To determine...

  • What is the Amount of Rise on the MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier
  • I went to the warehouse and measured the amount of rise on the MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier, # MT70214. From the bottom of the trailer frame mount bracket to the top of the spare tire brake the measurement is 10-1/4 inches. This is the same height of the Fulton Spare Tire Carrier, # FSTC1000301.

  • The Kenda Loadstar ST204/75D14 Bias Trailer Tire with 14 Inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM3S440 is a great match to your existing tires and will work well as a spare tire. If you need a spare tire carrier, I recommend the Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier # FSTC1000301. This carrier is designed to fit 4 on 4 and 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt patterns. It will fit a trailer tongue up to 3 inches wide x 4 inches high. I have attached an installation video for you.

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel Combos in Size ST215/75-14
  • Trailer tire size ST215/75-14 can be used on 5-1/2 to 7 inch wide trailer wheels. But with trailer tires the narrow the wheel the better since most of the strength comes from the sidewall. Wheel width is measured inside where the tire sits, not the overall width. We have trailer tire and wheel combos already mounted for size 215/75-14. I have included a link to them for you. We do have spare tire mounting kits. The most popular option is # FSTC1000301 which fits up to 3 x 4 inch tongues....

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for a Featherlite Trailer
  • It sounds like you installed a tongue jack on one side of your Featherlite trailer frame. On the other side of the trailer frame you could install a Fulton Hi Mount Spare Tire Carrier part # FSTC1000301 to mount your spare if you can determine that its compatible. This carrier works on 4 on 4, and 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern wheels that are 10 inch or larger in diameter. This will also fit frames that are up to 3 inches in width and 4 inches in height. I attached a review and an...

  • Can Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier be Bolted to a Featherlite 3110 Trailer
  • Since the frame on your Featherlite 3110 is mostly covered you wouldn't really have any other option but to bolt Fulton Hi-Mount Spare Tire Carrier # FSTC1000301 to the outside of the frame at the front of the trailer. I do recommend bolting it through the frame meaning the hardware would go all the way through. Using the included brackets at the back will also help distribute the force applied to the carrier over a larger area.

  • Compatibility of A-Frame Tool Box with Spare Tire Carrier on 20 Foot Big Tex Tilt Trailer
  • The A-Frame Trailer Tongue Toolbox # 350980 will fit on an A-frame trailer where the frame measures 17-1/2 inches edge to edge and go back from that location 15-1/2 inches along the frame. This will let you know if there is room for your spare if mounted in this location. This is not the only mount option, but is the most common for this box. It can be moved closer to the coupler if space is an issue. If there is not enough room for your current spare, you may want to consider the...

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for a ST205/75R15 with 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern
  • In order to determine your overall tire diameter we will need to do a little math (yay). I attached an FAQ on how to do this also, but I will walk you through the process. The number 205 represents the section width of the tire, in millimeters. To convert to cm you move the decimal point once to the left. This is the measurement of the tire at its thickest point. If you want to convert centimeters to inches, divide the number of centimeters by 2.54. 1 Inch is about equal to 2.54 centimeters. Example:...

  • Trailer Spare Tire Carrier For 17 Foot Featherlite Open Car Hauler
  • You could mount a spare tire carrier on the frame of your trailer or along the inside of metal railing of your trailer. I would recommend using a spare tire carrier that mounts to the frame of the trailer, like the item you selected, Fulton Hi-Mount Trailer Spare Tire Carrier, part # FSTC1000301. This spare tire carrier is compatible with 4 on 4 inch and 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt patterns. It will mount to trailer frames up to 3 inches by 4 inches. You will need to measure your trailer...

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for a Trailer with Angle Iron Side Rails
  • The Fulton Economy Spare Tire Carrier with Wheel Nut Lock # FETCSTL0701 would work just fine on a section of angle iron that is 2 inches by 2 inches. The frame does not have to completely fill out the U-bolt to allow the carrier to install. I wouldn't recommend the # FSTC1000301 for a trailer with angle iron rails.
