Video Transcript for Thule Force XT Rooftop Cargo Box Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Force XT rooftop cargo box. This offers the black arrow skin finish and 22 cubic feet of storage space. The part number is TH6359B. The force XT rooftop cargo box from Thule is going to be the perfect solution for freeing up space inside of your vehicle or keeping dirty, muddy kind of items outside.Generally, or initially, they we're designed for skis, so you could put your skis in there, with those longer items, its nice that you don't have to have them leaned up on your seats and stuff like that inside. But now, they're kind of used for just about any purpose, a lot of vacations you're going to see people with rooftop cargo boxes on and at 22 cubic feet, you can get a lot of gear in this box.Now heres a good idea of the amounts of gear you can get in the cargo box and really I think, once we get this loaded up, we'll find that we have little open spaces where we could even get a few more items put in there. Now here you can see we've got all that gear loaded up, and really we could fit more in here.

We could fit some jackets, we could fit some shoes, some smaller items and kind of tuck them in here and there. Now we've got some skis loaded up, we've basically put in three sets of skis and a snowboard, and something I really like, you can see the straps here, you're going to have three of those down through the box. Basically, that's going to help to keep your skis secured down to the bottom of the box. You're not really going to have to worry about them moving around or bouncing into each other too much. Now when we have this fully loaded with gear and bags and stuff like that, the straps can help to keep those items down, but if you're taking up all the room in the box, there's not a lot of room for it to move. I think these are important when it comes to these skis, just to keep them in good quality.Another nice feature about the XT box from Thule is that we're able to open from both the driver and passenger side.

It's the same process, we're going to place our key in there, turn it, and open it. I like this idea because we're not limited to just opening it on the passenger side, which of course, if you have that option it's safer, you're going to be away from traffic, but if you've got something over on the drivers side and you need to get it, you don't want to go through everything to get to it, it makes it pretty convenient. Now even with such a large cargo box, we don't have a whole lot of over-hang over the back of the rear bar. We can get this down to about 25 and a half inches. So basically, now this is just a guide, not exactly a rule, but if you have 25, so say 26 or more inches, from the center of your rear cross bar, to the closest point of your hatch when it's opened, you shouldn't have any interference issues. Now I really like the clamp system that they use. You can see it's going to fit right down in these grooves, which slide forward and back.

That's going to help it work out with a lot of different cross bar spreads. This box has been designed for a cross bar spread anywhere from 23 and five eights, all the way up to 37 and a half. So we've got a lot of good range there. You can see on each end here, we've got a tab that's meant to click into the larger square that's all the way out at the end. As we insert it, we want our two clamp arms to go in the larger holes, get our tabs aligned the way we want them there and you can press them down and in. That's going to allow us that adjustability, it really seals up that hole nicely on the bottom and a lot of other cargo boxes, what you're going to see, is that these are kind of open areas, can sometimes allow moisture and stuff like that to get in, or maybe they've just got kind of two brushes that face each other, not quite as solid and secure as what we see here.Something else I like about this design, is that when we want to store our box, we can remove these, they're not permanently attached.

These feet, if you look down here on the bottom, you'll notice how they stick down and out, that's important so it can grab a hold of our cross bar to get it nice and secure, but this can lead to problems when we go to set it down on a flat surface, it kind of tries to push those clamps up. So, if we're going to store it flat, simply release those clips on each side, we're able to pull these out, so now we've got a solid, flat surface on the bottom, so we can let it rest and just store our clamps inside. Now the speed ramps have also been designed with a lot of different cross bars in mind. They're going to fit anything up to three and a half inches wide, and an inch and eleven sixteenths of an inch tall, so that's going to cover square bars, round bars, elliptical bars, arrow bars, even most of your factory refract systems with the exception of maybe like the Xterra, it's got a really large cross bar on it, or the heavy duty square bars, those tend to be a little bit too tall. Now overall, the box is going to be 90 and a half inches long, it's 35 and a half inches wide, and from the bottom of your clamps to the very top, it's going to be 18 and three quarters of an inch. Now interior wise, we're going to be looking at items up to like 84 and five eighths of an inch from front to back, especially important like when you're dealing with skis and stuff like that. Now, we don't have this many sets to put in here and show you, but they say it's going to work for five to seven pairs of skis or three to five snow boards. Now the finish you can see on the upper half of the box, it's going to have the arrow skin texture. That just makes it look really nice. You can see it's got the little diamond pattern in it, it gives you a nice look on the rooftop of your vehicle. Then here on the bottom, you can see we've switched to a textured finish. I think this is really good because when you have it off of your vehicle, when you're storing it, maybe you're sliding it on and off, this type of texture isn't really going to show the scratches. Now the box itself is constructed out of an ABS plastic, so that's going to be really good about standing up to the UV rays, we're not going to have to worry about fading, not going to have to worry about weather causing damage to it, and any impact as you're going down the road, really shouldn't effect it, it's going to be flexible enough oo absorb most of those things. Also, to add to that moisture weather resistance, we've got a rolled edge here on the bottom, and that's going to fit all the way down, right up against that flat spot to the top. You see, so we've got a good over-hang there. We really shouldn't have to worry about moisture or dirt getting in our box.Now for 22 cubic foot of storage, we've still got a pretty low profile with this box. You can see they've tapered the front, that's going to promote good arrow dynamics, and they've designed it, you can see, kind of the recesses here, to virtually eliminate all wind noise. We had it out to about 60 miles an hour, out on the highway, and there really wasn't a major difference. Now when installing your cargo box on the rooftop of your vehicle, it is possible for one person to do it, but it is on the heavy side, something you want to keep in mind. When you're looking at boxes of this size, something that I like to recommend is the Thule multi-lift system. It's something you can attach right to the ceiling in your garage, it'll come underneath the box, it'll lift it up, so not only does that help you in getting it on and off your vehicle, but it also keeps it stored up and out of the way.Now to install our cargo box, we need to place it up on the cross rails of our vehicle. Generally, what I do is, get the box placed up and on and then I'll adjust my feet to match. Position wise, since it does open from both sides, and since it is a pretty wide box, I like to center it so we'll have access from both sides, but if you want additional storage room, maybe you want to but a bike rack beside it or something like that, you can also leave it one side or the other. Now once we have it positioned where we want it, we're going to take one of our keys, and place it on the lock core here, and we'll turn that to the right to open it. Once we've got that open, we want to tighten down all four of the clamps. Now the nice thing about these quick clamps is, you'll tighten them down just like a gas cap, you'll tighten them down until they click, it indicates that one's fully secure, just go around and do the three remaining. Now once we've got all four of our clamps secured at this point, we're ready to load up our gear, of course. When you've got that loaded up, you can see we've got the strap here, so it keeps it pretty accessible, where you can pull that down and get our hands on it, we'll want to pull that down firmly, turn our key and remove it. Now the nice thing about the key set-up here, is that it's not going to allow you to remove this key unless all three of our locks are fully engaged. So that'll indicate to you, you've got it locked and secured properly. It's going to prevent any accidental openings or maybe any gaps that might allow moisture, dust, things like that in.That's going to complete our look at the Thule Force XT rooftop cargo box, part number TH6359B.

90-1/2 x 35-1/2 x 18-3/4. This aerodynamic, low-profile cargo box holds outdoor gear and large bags for 5 or more people. Built-in Quick-Grip clamps let you quickly mount the box to your roof rack, and the locking lid opens from both sides.

I ordered it on Friday Morning and it was in the driveway Tuesday morning. Mounted it on a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country. 1. Its water-proof. The first thing I did was wash the van and box. Not a drop inside. Went on a 3500 mile trip through rain, fog, and snow. Again, not a drop of water inside. 2. It's easy to mount. I had help putting up on the van with the factory bars. I was able to take it down and put it back up by myself. The clamps click in and are very secure. I chose this model because it was 10 pounts lighter than the other unit I was considering (Y07337). 3. Everything on the van still works. The XM sat radio works as usual. The sun roof and rear hatch open and close without any problems. Plenty of clearance. 4. The cargo box doesn't vibrate or shake the vehicle. I didn't notice any noise at highway speed either. If I pulled back the sun shade on the sun roof, I could see the front slightly bouncing, but not enough to cause any problems. I did lose 1 to 2 miles per gallon, which was to be expected. It's fairly aerodynamic as the van still seems to get up to speed even with 6 people and all their stuff on the wheels. 5. The latches take a bit of practice close and lock. I found that If I clamp the top and bottom up front with my free hand, I can lock it with ease. The top is a little flexy, but once closed the box is very sturdy and stiff. 6. Positive extras: you get 3 long tie down straps and 6 anchors in the box. There is even a short strap that held the clamps for shipping. You can find your vehicle in a crowded parking lot, just look for the black turtle on your car/van/truck. You get two keys, so stash one in the glove box. 22 cubic feet is a lot of space. It really hellps to clear up the interior of your vehicle. 7. The are a couple of issues. The van/box is about 7 and a half feet tall. Some parking structures, drive throughs, and low hanging branches will cause problems. I had to get a 3 step ladder to get access to load and unload the box. Finally, with all the weight, the head lights were up a bit, so I got the high beams flashed at me a couple of times. The air bags they sell here are a good future project. 613889

For your GMC Acadia, I recommend the Thule Force XT XXL # TH6359B over the Yakima Skybox 21 # Y07337. The wind noise is going to be there with any roof mounted box and both of these boxes have a nice aerodynamic shape. They both have really good reputations with their owners, so the biggest reason for my recommendation of the Thule carrier is the locking mechanism.
