Pack the fun without cramping your car. This roof box is sized for the small stuff that makes a big difference - sleeping bags, camping gear, dirty boots - and still leaves room up top for your skis or bikes to come along for the ride.
You can load more into this compact box than you'd expect - duffel bags, camping gear, muddy boots - all the stuff that crowds your trunk on weekend trips. And unlike bulkier rooftop boxes that eat up your crossbar space, this box leaves room for a bike rack, ski carrier, or even a kayak. That's especially helpful if you've got a smaller vehicle or flush bars with no overhang. It's also light enough to lift on your own and small enough to stash on a garage shelf when you're done using it.
Loading the box up is only half the story - you still have to get to your gear. Most rooftop boxes this size only open from the passenger's side - or the rear - which can be a problem when you're pulled over on the side of the road or stuck in a tight parking spot. The ShellRaiser opens from both sides, so you're not stepping into traffic or squeezing past a car that's parked too close just to get your gear. It also gives you more flexibility when setting up your roof. You can mount the box on the driver's side and a kayak on the passenger's side, keeping bow and stern straps out of view while you drive - and keeping your setup just the way you like it.
Of course, before you load it up, it has to fit - and that's where the mounting system makes a difference. Most roof boxes still use fixed U-bolts, which only work if your crossbars happen to line up just right. If they don't, you're stuck drilling holes or forcing a fit. The ShellRaiser mounts with an adjustable cable system that lines up with your bars - wherever they sit. It fits more vehicles out of the box and mounts without tools, so you're not messing around with a wrench before the trip even starts.
Once it's in place and loaded up, you want to know your gear's going to stay put. You expect a roof box to have locks, and this one does. They're simple, but they keep your gear protected - and that's what really matters. The keys have a red coating, which makes them easier to spot, especially if you're a chronic key-misplacer. Nothing flashy, just one of those small details that makes the value feel real.
It is the perfect size. I was able to have it on my 2013 Hyundai Sonata and still fit my kayak. It kept all my gear dry and was easy to use. I was able to just toss most my soft goods in the box plus a ukulele, and 2 camping chairs. The only thing I would improve is When closing it you need to make sure it is fully closed front to back in order for the lock to work. I couldn't always tell if it was fully closed just by looking at it. I will say the Shellraiser It made packing so much easier. I usually have to play a game of tetris with my gear. This gave me extra space so packing went more quickly. This is a great product for people who just need extra room, or want a way to keep items on their roof dry. I was using a roof basket before this and it takes time to strap items down and everything gets wet if it rains.
The site says this will fit a 2022 Rav4, it does not fit.
We have a trip planed on Friday and needed the space.
This is a great box in this size category. Just the right amount of space for weekend trips where all the extra stuff is in the way in the SUV, especially when we get to take the grandkids along! I have had the chance to use it quite a bit now and everything works as it should. I am not an easy 5 star guy, 4 stars because the cable system for mounting to cross bars is a bit harder to get wrapped around the bars and started than I anticipated. It's definitely better than the other options I have used in the 8cu ft size range so you likely will not see anything better size and price. After using the sidekick and the Trunx boxes this one is the best of the bunch.
The hinges are kind of tricky at first and Bo’s seems flimsy. Once you get it together is fine. Attaching to car also took some time. Overall so far so good
should work for my needs to carry extra stuff on a long road trip. A little difficult to assemble but OK, not sure if it will be weatherproof as yet.

Hi Lee, before you return the box I was curious about what you mean by doesn't fit? Does it not fit the cross bars on your vehicle? or are you talking about rear hatch clearance? If you let me know exactly what is going on.. I may be able to help you resolve it.
