Video Transcript for Review of Camco RV Heaters - Catalytic Heater - CAM57331

Michael: Hi there I'm Michael with etrailer.com today we're going to take a quick look at the Cameco Olympian wave three catalytic safety heater for small RVs. This is going to act as a primary or a secondary heating source in your small RVs. When I say small, I'm really talking about RVs that are about up to 12 feet long. This does have a room heating capacity of about 130 square feet. Our knobs on the side here are going to allow us to switch between low and high. We can go from 1,600 BTUs up to 3,000 BTUs because this is a low pressure LP gas operation, we're not going to have to hook up to our battery and it's not going to drain our electrical system at all. It is going to work completely off of propane. This only consumes about an eighth of a pound of propane per hour, so it is about 96% efficient.

It's going to allow us to sustain our heat for much longer. It can be used either mounted onto your wall for permanent use or in the portable position. If you're wanting to mount it on the wall all the hardware does come with this kit, your screws here. Then it also is going to come with a template to help you get it mounted onto your wall. Very easy to do.

Once you have those screws mounted in place on your wall, you simply line them up with the holes in the back side there. If you want to use it as a portable unit, there are legs available. They do not come with this unit, but you can find them here at etrailer.com. These will simply mount to the bottom of the unit and allow you to stand it upright and take it along with you wherever you're wanting to go. As long as you have an LP fuel source. The shut off valve in the unit is going to help prevent any accidental non ignition fuel discharges so that we're not going to have to worry about gas leaks anything like that. It is important to note that this is a combustion unit.

So it is going to consume oxygen in the room so you should always ensure that you have an adequate fresh air supply to make sure that the combustion is taking place correctly and that you are going to have enough oxygen in the air for yourself. We want to give you a few measurements to ensure that this is going to work for your setup. Our total overall width, right about 10 and three quarters of an inch wide, by right at 12 inches tall, and our depth for the unit itself is about three and seven eighths, just shy of four inches deep. This does come with a three year warranty from Cameco and the unit is only about six pounds so it's going to be pretty easy to lift up and carry it if you do decide to use that portable option. If you mount it, they do recommend making sure that no dust and things get in there. Keep a cover on it when it's not in use. They do sell a cover.

You can find it here at etrailer.com using the part number on the screen there. It simply slides over the unit. Make sure that all the dust and everything stays out so you won't have to maintain it, clean it as often, just keeping all that dust out of the way. That's going to complete our look at the Cameco Olympian wave three catalysts safety heater for your small RV. I'm Michael with e trailer, thanks for watching.

Started with the Wave 3. Too small for my application. 18' inside length toy hauler. Ended up buying the larger Wave 6. Couldn't return the first one after hooking it up and trying it. Get a larger size than what Camco's application chart recommends. Pros: No battery drain. Works OK. Cons: Less heat than expected. No thermostat, so it's either "on" or "off". Set off the smoke detectors first 3-4 times of use. I mounted the Wave 6 to a TV articulated mount so I could point the heat where I needed it and stow it out of the way when not in use. I made my own custom cover out of vinyl to fit around the mount.

Have not yet installed, nor used my new heater. I have however used these extensively in the past and have confidence this one will work as well. They are great for heating an rv. We had to remove a furnace from our older motor home as there were no parts for it and no newer furnace would fit so decided on the olympian Wave 3, it's going to fit perfect.

Review from a similar Wave Heater in RV Heaters

Took some time before writing to evaluate product. Works as expected. Darn good back up for power outages and extra warmth. -17°F outside of tiny home 65+°F in with addition of small amount of grid electric. Likely would have kept up by its self. Condensation occurs so ventilation is essential for that as well as safe operation.

Ask the Experts about this Camco RV Heaters

  • Can I Leave the Camco Olympian Wave Heater on Overnight
Yes. The Camco Olympian Wave Heater # CAM57331 can be used as your primary source of heat and can be setup to be both permanently installed or portable. This is a heating solution that is safe to sleep with the unit on, but you will need to leave a window cracked at all times to allow for combustion to occur. When it comes to installation/setup, you do need to ensure you have a professional install this, have a window cracked to use the heater, and verify your propane set up meets your...

The Camco Olympain Wave 3, part # CAM57331, has a fuel consumption of 1/8 lb per hour and boasts a 96% efficiency. Camco does not have a website showing the burn times of this heater, but I have linked to a couple of video reviews of this heater that go a little further in depth with its specs and capabilities. This heater can be used as a portable heater with the mounting legs, part # CAM57701, and the dust cover, part # CAM57722. These two pieces will allow the heater to be moved to...

  • Can You Use An Adjustable Regulator with a Low Pressure Propane Heater?
You cannot use an adjustable regulator with the Camco Olympian Wave 3 # CAM57331 since this heater operates on a low pressure gas system and running high pressure gas through it would cause it to function improperly and potentially create a dangerous situation. Instead, you would want to use a hose and regulator like the # CAM57703 which has a 6ft long hose on a low pressure regulator to connect from your gas source. It should be noted that the Olympian Wave 3 has an adjustable heat...

If you will be permanently installing the Camco Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater part # CAM57331 then you would need to run a hose from the heater to the propane manifold. I cannot recommend you tap or splice into an existing line. The fitting on the end of the heater is a 3/8" male flare. You would then need a hose with a female 3/8" flare and then whatever is on your propane manifold. Since you will need to possibly alter or connect to the propane manifold on your trailer I highly...

  • Do Catalytic Heaters Like Camco CAM57331 Wave 3 Heater Put Out Condensation
Catalytic heaters like the # CAM57331 Wave 3 do indeed put out moisture as a byproduct of the heating process, it's unavoidable with that type of heater. After doing some research, I've found that the best bet to keeping a large part of the condensation at bay is having a window or two cracked and a fan to provide air circulation. If you do a Google search, you will find references to some 12-volt powered dehumidifiers, but from what I've read they use a lot of battery power and...

  • Why Is There a Flame Flare Up While Starting the Camco Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater
The flame flare up that you described on the Camco Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater part # CAM57331 is caused by the flame spreader. The flame spreader then warms the thermocouple. Once the thermocouple is warm it will send gas to the pad which ignites and expels heat. There is no way to correct it as that is how the unit is designed to operate.

  • How Much Ventilation Is Needed for the Camco Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater
In regards to the Camco Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater for Small RVs part # CAM57331, it must be used in a ventilated area per the manufacturer to prevent the build-up of gasses. That said, its not possible to give specifics on this as there are simply too many factors. The vast majority of applications won't be air tight so although cracking a window is not a bad idea, it's not necessarily a requirement. This however will vary by use.
