Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Thule Replacement Aluminum Shank Adapter

Today, we're gonna take a quick look at the Thule replacement aluminum shank adapter. This is gonna allow you to convert your inch and a quarter shank on your Thule bike rack to a two inch shank. So that's gonna upgrade your shank diameter, so it's gonna git into that two inch by two inch hitch receiver. This is going to be a direct replacement from Thule for the following bike racks. It's gonna the TH945. The TH912. And TH914.There's gonna be a couple of the older style of Thule bike racks. This is gonna be made of a durable, but lightweight aluminum construction, so we don't have to worry about any rusting or corrosion.

We'll have our hitch pin hole here. That'll accept a standard five eights inch hitch pin to go through there, or you're anti-rattle bolt that came with your bike rack. And then we'll have the actually attachment location here. Now, this doesn't come with any hardware, so if you need the screw to attach that on to your inch and a quarter shank, that is sold separately. You can find that here at etrailer.com using part number 853-5787-02. That's just gonna be a little M6 by 16 millimeter flat cap screw that fits inside there. Just fits right down in place.

It'll be nice and flat so we don't have to worry about any obstruction for our bike rake itself, or for fitting our shank into our hitch. And it'll also have that nice black powder coat finish, so it'll stay looking nice, matched the rest of our bike rack.As far as our dimensions, it's gonna be 10 inches long, going from end to end. The width, of course, will be two inches, outside edge to outside edge. Our inner diameter or our inner measurement, excuse me, is that one and a quarter inch, so we can fit it over our original shank on our Thule bike rack. And then the distance from the end of the shank to our hitch pin hole, is one and nine sixteenths inches. And that's gonna do it for our quick look at the replacement aluminum shank adapter for an inch and a quarter to two inch from Thule.

Reliable and fast service. Two thumbs up!!!

by:

worked perfectly for my Thule Roadway bike rack

by:

Originally my Thule Bike Rack came with this adapter but it was plastic, and I had no use for it at the time and threw it out.
My new "tank" I drive came with a 2" receiver so this adapter was required. GREAT QUALITY. Much better than what originally was sent with bike rack.
etrailer also provided great feedback throughout the process regarding order processing, shipping, and shipment tracking. Would def use them again for future needs.

It worked OK. More my problem than yours. My Thule bike rack is an older model and not specifically listed for this adapter. With a little modification it will work fine.

Fits perfect on my Thule 914XT bike rack. It works well with the 2 inch receiver hitch on my car. This is my second order with this company and would not hesitate buying from them again. Great customer service. Prices are generally good.

Why thank you very much, Deborah! Happy to hear it's working well for you. How have you liked the Thule rack since having it?

@BrookeM The Thule rack works as it always did, very well. Glad I did not need to invest in a new one. With the $60 I was able to use my existing rack.

I just received and used the products I ordered from etrailer. I am very happy that the Replacement Thule Conversion Shank and screw for My Bike Rack work very well.

by:

New car came with a larger hitch than on my old car so my 4 bike Thule rack couldn't be used. This adapter was perfect for adapting my larger hitch so I can now use my bike rack again! Outstanding product and even better service from etrailer.

Note: Do not buy the U Haul adapter for this same purpose. It allows too much wiggle between the smaller hitch and adapter that then results in too much swaying of the bike rack.

Thanks for reaching out. The product is still working perfectly, looks the same as it did a year ago, and allows us to use the Thule bike rack regularly. The product is significantly better than the part we bought from another retailer.

by:

As I needed this for a Thule 1 1/4" to 2" bike rack I expected the holes to line up but like other reviewers I had to drill my own hole. Still fits a little loosely in my Curt 2" receiver but with the threaded pin it doesn't move too much. We'll see how it works when I take the bikes for a ride.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. This adapter is intended for specific Thule models, and is not compatible with all models. We do not recommend modifying the product. Thanks!

by:

I have a Thule Pathfinder hitch mount bike carrier. This adapter will work but does require some custom drilling to make it so. It would be nice if a more accurate chart or the like was available so that we could positively identify which is the correct adapter for a particular Thule carrier. We'll make this one work.

Replacement parts can be difficult to narrow down since so many of them are so similar. We can help with that, particularly once we know the model number of the rack. Give us a call or send us an email.

by:

The product appears to be well made and sturdy enough although I never got to use it for the intended purpose (mounting a Thule Parkway 4 bike carrier). I have 2 vehicles with trailer hitches suited for the job.
The problem is that this shank adapter adds approx' 6" to the length of the tongue that inserts in to the trailer hitch. For my '08 F-150 that means leaving my spare tire home every time we go bike riding because the shank butts up against the spare tire (not gonna happen)!
The other vehicle is an '01 Pathfinder but the trailer hitch on this vehicle is sealed on one end preventing the shank from penetrating far enough to get the retaining bolt inserted...Strike 3 I'm out. We're selling the bike rack and for now at least just hauling the bikes in the bed of the F-150. I know that's not ideal for the bikes but in the short term I'm not ready to drop $200 for a new bike rack.

by:

Great video showing how adapter worked. Great communication after order and adapter works perfectly

by:

We switched vehicles and went from the small hitch to the large hitch. This product worked perfectly to adapt our bike rack to the new vehicle's hitch. It fits tight and snug. I recommend that you order all the washers and bolts that show up on their page as suggested other purchases (maybe a grand total of $3 more but I needed a couple of them so well worth it). The part came quickly and was properly packed.

by:

This insert, originally made for a thule bike rack, works great as an adapter to fit the type 3 trailer hitch. I had bought a Saris bike rack but the adapter that came with it is poorly designed, allowing the bike to bounce and wooble with every bump in the road. This Thule part fits the Saris insert keeping the rack sturdy.

by:

I ordered two products a couple days apart. Both orders, a locking receiver pin and a 1 1/4 to 2 inch receiver adapter, arrived on time and in good condition. The price was very competitive and service was prompt. I will certainly check retailer first if I need hitch related products in the future. Very good experience!

by:

The adapter is great, the service from etrailer.com was also good! The only pet peeve I have is the difficulty I had to change the quantity of the second item in my order. It was not easy during the ordering on your page. I had wanted two end caps, decided to only get one as I found it too difficult to change the quantity!
Shipping was fast!
Thanks for your help in replacing my lost parts.

by:

Fit perfect, ordered the screw ( M6 x 16mm Flat Cap Screw for Thule Bike Carriers - 853-5787-02) that other reviews had recommended. Would have been disappointed (in myself) if I had not done so. This screw ties the adapter into the 1 1/4 male end.

Customer service is EXCELLENT. You can order with confidence.

by:

I purchased an adapter to go from 2" receiver to 1 1/4 for a bike rack. Several things I liked about this adapter was it was aluminum and relieved on both sides. Why this is important is to prevent it from rusting in place if left on to long as steel on steel will.

by:

Exactly what I needed

by:

This adapter is exactly what i needed to install my Thule Roadway 914xt onto my 2 inch hitch receiver. The service from etrailer, makes the shopping experience easier and smoother.

by:

Cut tubing length to fit 1-1/2 inch Thule bike rack into 2 inch receiver

by:

High quality aluminum adaptor that required additional drilling to line up the hitch, adaptor and bike rack. I expect years of service from this adaptor.

by:

Just what I was looking for to make a better 2" to 1.25" adapter for my Curt bike rack. This was shipped on Saturday and received on Monday. Thanks for the great service.

by:

This the 2nd one that I've needed. Requires customized holes drilled for my particular receiver but otherwise works as expected. Item delivered on time. I recommend etrailer.com.

by:

Purchased adapter and after checkout realized that I needed this 36 cent screw.
Called customer service and the happily combined the order which arrived in 48 hours. Great fix for my bike rack and great customer service as well!
(Really should add the screw with the adaptor though)
Thx and will use the company in the future

  • Easiest Way to Convert Thule T2 Bike Rack from 1-1/4 inch Hitch Size to 2 inch Hitch Size
The 2 inch Thule hitch adapter # 853-7292 does not fit every bike rack they make unfortunately and it does not fit any version of the Thule T2 bike racks. Since you don't want to replace the shank (understandable) the best work around is the hitch reducer sleeve part # HT02.

  • Can Stinger Adapter be Used On Thule Carrier With 1-1/4 Inch Shank To Fit 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
The Thule Replacement Aluminum Shank Adapter, part # 853-7292 is designed to work with Thule bike carriers # TH954 and # TH914, and allows the 1-1/4 inch stinger on the bike racks to fit a 2 inch trailer receiver. I called my contact at Thule and they told me that unfortunately there is no adapter available to upgrade a # TH9045 bike carrier, which has a 1-1/4 inch shank to a 2 inch shank to fit your new trailer hitch. Since there is not a replacement shank available for the TH9035XT the only option is to use the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HT02. The correct receiver will depend on the bike rack that you have, as each have a different shape and pin hole placement. Since it's an older rack, your most likely fit is part # 853-7292, for the Ridgeline 4 bike, or Roadway 2 or 4 bike. • Can I Use the 1-1/4 Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack in a 2 Receiver?
No, we do not. The only affordable way to use the 1-1/4" Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack item # TH23JV in a 2" receiver is to use a reducer like the the Brophy item # HT02. This hitch reducer will not lower your vehicles tongue weight capacity but it will allow you to mount the 1-1/4" Thule T2 Pro item # TH23JV in a 2" receiver. The Thule Replacement Aluminum Shank Adapter - 1-1/4" to 2" item # 853-7292 you were looking at doesn't fit the T2 Pro. It works on a few of Thule's hanging bike racks...

Since you have the 1-1/4 inch version of the Thule T2 Bike Rack 917XTR you will need to use the Hitch Reducer sleeve part # HT02. This will fit in the 2 inch hitch and will reduce it's size down to a 1-1/4 inch hitch which will allow your rack to be installed in it and won't add much length to the rack (only about 3 inches. • How To Use Thule T2 Classic For 1-1/4 Receiver TH9045 In 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver
I have another option for you, but you are correct that the Thule Shank # 853-7292 you purchased does not fit your Thule T2 Classic Bike Rack with a 1-1/4" Shank. There is not a replacement shank available to convert your rack to work with the 2" version. • What is the Purpose of Smaller Hole on Thule Bike Rack Shank # 853-7292
The small hole on the part # 853-7292 is designed for attaching it to the shank of a bike rack. The larger hole is for the hitch pin of the rack. This is a specific fit for a few Thule racks TH954, TH912, and TH914 so if you do not have one of these racks it would not fit. The bolt that's for the smaller hole is the part # 853-5787-02.

  • Can A Hitch Adapter Be Used On A 1-1/4" Hitch To Haul A Platform Rack With Four Bikes
No, hitch adapters reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50% so your 1-1/4" hitch wouldn't have enough capacity left to handle the weight of four bikes. You'll need to see if the vehicle has a 2" hitch option or confirm that you have class II 1-1/4" hitch in and use a hanging rack like the Thule Hitching Post Pro Bike Rack # TH934XTR in order to haul four bikes. If you can tell me the year/make/model of the vehicle I'd be happy to check the available hitch options.

You could use Brophy part # HT02 or Hidden Hitch part # 80300. Part 80300 will decrease the hitch tongue weight capacity by 50 percent.
